Esmay

Careful - this guy is on several other websites.

If this site is anything to go by they are bound to get lucky at some time 🤦🏼‍♀️

Meeting up for coffee and/or lunch for old friends and neighbours within a reasonable distance. For those further away, e-mails, Facebook private messages and phone calls.

I have a dear friend and old work colleague who lives a train ride away so I make the journey once a year to see her face to face.

I send cards at birthdays and Christmas too.

Most of my childhood friends are spread across the world.
We keep in regular touch by WhatsApp and Facebook

I meet up with old school friends in Oxford once a year.
Someone I met at ante natal classes moved away from the area and we phone once a month.
Friends from work live locally and we meet for coffee in the home of the one who live the most centrally once a month and arrange the next meeting while we are there.
Another friend uses WhatsApp and we use it to arrange to meet for lunch about six times a year.

I meet up for coffee and a bite to eat every few weeks or so with a couple of old friends. We always have a good time and catch up on each others' news. We don't text or Whatsapp other than to arrange the meetings.

I am useless at this.
I love meeting one "set" of old friends. We hardly ever do.
Every time we meet we say we should do this more often! They are less than an hour away.
Occasionally one of us says on Monday/Thuesday "shall we do x on Friday" and we do.
We always laugh like drains, weep together, hold each other close. They are a couple so very in tune with my husband and I...

But some friends want more regular contact than I can give. I try with this and I always feel guilty when I eventually get in touch...
When I see them it's still nice and our lives have been intertwined for a long time.
I don't love them any less, just differently - but our "hardly ever but very intense" friendship couple suits me best. And fills both me and my husband with joy. We feel 30 again with them...
No recriminations for no contact, no excuses. Happy to say "I can't be bothered with Friday this week". We really love them.

We do however always help all our friends (and their families). I've done all sorts of peculiar, time consuming and stressful things over the recent past to help.

I think all friendships are different and you negotiate them differently.

Its truly an amazing thing if you find someone exactly on your wavelength though.
Thank you to our most ridiculously joyful weep together friends.
Xx

Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing well. I was thinking about how easy it can be to lose touch with old friends when life gets busy, even when we care about them a lot. I would love to hear what works for you. Do you prefer a short message now and then, a regular phone call, or meeting up when you can? What small habits help you keep a friendship warm over time? Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I look forward to reading them.
