Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

“Hope itself is like a star- not to be seen in the sunshine of prosperity, and only to be discovered in the night of adversity. ”

When our children were small we often prayed blessings over them as an encouragement. When our son was aged five his class attended church every week and after about a year or so our son asked if he could have a word with the vicar at the end of the service. He then proceeded to pray a traditional blessing over the minister, which the teacher, when she told us about it that day, said moved her and the vicar both to tears. Another year passed and we were in a service where this same vicar was speaking and recounted the story of a time when he was going through a very difficult time and feeling very low, when a little boy prayed a blessing over him at the end of a school service and that simple blessing made a world of difference.
So, for anyone who's going through tough times:

The Lord bless you
and keep you;
the Lord make his face shine upon you
and be gracious to you;
the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace.
Numbers 6:24-26

I always find the Ruth quote that Icyalittle mentioned, the "whither thou goest," one, very moving.

I am sure this will have been mentioned too from John -

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

Deuteronomy Chapter 6 v 24-26
"The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace".

It will be 2 years on the 30.09 since I last saw my gc, he was 8 months old. The love and support from my DH and my faith have carried me through the worse 2 years of my life.

In my darkest moments of despair, and there have been many, I've forgotten the greatness of God's love. I want to thank each one of you for sharing your most moving Bible phrases. Each and every one has spoken to me at this particularly difficult time.

I will pray for you nannynoo. God WILL fight for you and your family, may be not in the way you want or expect, but He will fight.

''The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes''

I need God to fight for me and my family , please pray for us , thank you xxxx

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!

Icyalittle Mon 28-Apr-14 17:45:24

jings I agree with you 100%. NIV is better than most, I admit. But so many other translations have lost the beauty and rhythm that helped us remember passages by heart. They feel like mentally stubbing your toe when you read them.

DebnCreme Mon 28-Apr-14 13:17:47

Thank you smile

Nonu Mon 28-Apr-14 13:12:37

Debn, Good luck for this afternoon !
smile

DebnCreme Mon 28-Apr-14 13:01:05

I use the New International Version which seems to have restored some of the beauty. Have a visit to the doctor planned for this afternoon and am nervous. Thank you for most of the beautiful words mentioned here.

I think so too Maggiemaybe and the ideas it puts forward seem to me very "liberal".

For sheer beauty of language and poetry I love the passage from "The Song of Songs":

"For lo, the winter is past,
The rain is over and gone;
The flowers appear on the earth;
The time of the singing of birds is come,
And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land "

It seems to have lost nothing in translation.

Maggiemaybe Mon 28-Apr-14 12:22:01

But it's beautiful, Greenfinch!

The Song of Solomon, passim.

Greenfinch Mon 28-Apr-14 11:04:29

Sorry ,it's a bit more than a phrase !

Greenfinch Mon 28-Apr-14 11:03:23

To everything there is a season ,and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
a time to be born and a time to die;
a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
a time to kill and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn and a time to dance;
a time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek and a time to lose;
a time to keep and a time to cast away;
a time to rend and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence and a time to speak;
a time to love and a time to hate;
a time for war and a time for peace.
Ecclesiates chapter 3 (RV)

Yes jingl

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 28-Apr-14 09:32:27

Anyone else agree that modern bibles don't read as well as the King James one?

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 28-Apr-14 09:29:43

Very hopeful for this day and age!

petallus Mon 28-Apr-14 09:27:38

What a wonderful daughter-in-law!

Or maybe a bit too full on for this day and age?

Icyalittle Mon 28-Apr-14 08:17:32

Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
Ruth 1:16

And for summer in the Alps:
Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
