I would love to attend the summer solstice ritual at Stonehenge this month. Has anyone been and what is it like. What do you do about accommodation. Can you just take a tent or do you need to book a room. I could not go all night without sleep, so would I need to book a room at a b and b and rise at about 4am to go to the site. Is the accommodation in this area very early booked at this time of year. Is it safe to go alone, I have no-one who would be so interested in going and no-one I know would sacrifice a couple of days holiday to go. I would imagine there is parking problems so is there an early bus service. Anyone ideas would be welcome

Wasn't it horrific? And there was no investigation either. Think what would happen today - we have come on a bit, I suppose...and yes, it was in Thatcher's time!

Aka Sun 22-Jun-14 06:54:40

Of course that was when Thatcher was PM.

I saw that. Horrendous violence.
I remember the Battle of the Beanfield. Immortalised by the Levellers in 'Levelling the Land'...

Ana Sat 21-Jun-14 22:08:16

Yes, I saw it too. The police were rather heavy-handed, weren't they?

Aka Sat 21-Jun-14 22:05:18

Me too. Very interesting as you say, but the police violence in the 80s was shocking

nonu Just because today is the longest day and from now on the days will get gradually shorter does not mean that summer is dwindling too. The sun has been warming the ground in our half of the world, and that heat is still there, influencing the weather, which is often better and warmer that the earlier summer days. July and August will be at least as warm and sunny as June, and the ripening crops will be soaking up the heat. Don't be sad, enjoy the summer and stock up on vitamin D in the sunshine.

LONA sweetie I am indeed, I have mixed feelings as you can guess, I am glad to be back and see them all.

"BUT" I want to be Stateside ,still not so nice to see how the garden has gone totally to pot so that will occupy me for some time, getting it sorted
.
Family coming down next weekend so I am pretty pleased to see them all ,we will have a good time .

Nonu! grin You've got it back to front - welcome back!

I didn't go to bed last night, because I like to observe the sun rising and setting, every day in a slightly different place. Last night the sun set at 22.32, dusk didn't end until 23.44. As it was a clear night it never really got dark, twilight started at 3 .16 with a slight glow in the distance towards Skye. The sun just started to show itself at 4.28 lighting up the sea very quickly. It was a beautiful night

Lona Sat 21-Jun-14 20:34:55

Hi Nonu sunshine smile Actually, it's the longest day!

Are you back home now?

Nonu Sat 21-Jun-14 20:28:06

I just find it sad that we are now on the shortest day, seems to me that Summer has just begun !!

I've just tried to persuade DH to light the bonfire as it's getting a bit on the big side and DD has this funny thing she likes to wave about when she's casting spells but he has quite rightly pointed out that the wind is in the wrong direction and we might set fire to the hedge! hmm

Silverfish Sat 21-Jun-14 20:09:19

we called it pot in those days.

ffinnochio Sat 21-Jun-14 20:07:03

Debn - Blimey! shock

ffinnochio Sat 21-Jun-14 20:05:33

I don't know the proper name J - we called it 'shag' baccie. It wasn't dodgy stuff. smile

Ana Sat 21-Jun-14 19:35:09

Yes, but DebnCreme did say 'caught', not 'placed'...hmm

JessM Sat 21-Jun-14 19:32:39

Well I suppose the inside of a briefcase a cleaner place to deposit a baby than a hospital floor. hmm Makes sense I guess.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 21-Jun-14 19:15:51

finnocchio what was in the roll-ups?

thatbags Sat 21-Jun-14 18:46:58

Debn!! Good Grief!

Ana Sat 21-Jun-14 18:31:30

What a good job your husband's briefcase was positioned so...conveniently, DebnCreme!

DebnCreme Sat 21-Jun-14 17:57:12

My daughter was born on the 21st June. I had been in hospital for several weeks and when they walked me up to the labour ward I delivered her on the corridor floor, caught in my husband's briefcase. Not a day to forget in a hurry AND a set of accounts was ruined!

thatbags Sat 21-Jun-14 17:31:51

thatbags Sat 21-Jun-14 17:31:36

There is nothing religious or spiritual about the summer solstice for me.
It's just a time that is subject to the usual laws of nature–distance from sun, tile of Earth's axis, etc. I had a lovely day shooting arrows in a Scottish forest smile

Stonehenge is a wonderful credit to man's ingenuity in the face of great difficulties (the heaviness of large stones and cranes not having been invented yet).
