Are they supposed to be people who stick to what is in the bible? Or people who do not?

I think it was Jesus who is quoted as saying turn the other cheek.
He was a Jew but preached a more compassionate version of Judaism.
So he was outlawed by stricter groups.

magpie this is actually a topic which interests me but I have resisted the temptation to comment too much as I saw the thread as yet another rehash of naive and repetitive views.
However there comes a time when following a thread 'at arms length' becomes a little frustrating, so when a fellow gransnetter mentions the boring pointlessness of it I feel justified in wading in to reinforce her comment. Perfectly acceptable conduct as far as I'm concerned and not requiring your approval.
Clearly the topic under discussion is of no interest to you, but feel free to lurk until you are ready to pounce even if your contribution is at its usual poor level.
I have enjoyed the wider debate from posters with widely-differing opinions and appreciate the fact that we have well-informed and articulate contributions to balance the narrow-minded and hidebound ones.
I have now reached the stage where the tedious far outweighs the interesting so will go off and do my utmost to find something in my feeble existence to occupy my time.

I am not nit-picking, Lilygran. You say " however it happened" but those who insist that everything was created in 6 days (not seven, of course, the seventh was a day of rest) are very specific about how it happened and how long it took. Their ears are closed to "however it happened", which is what those who study the external evidence have tried to find out. Their evidence is pretty conclusive - but not to those who think they know already.

I will join you, mcem My garden needs me. We are banging our heads against a brick wall here, there are none so deaf as those who don't want to hear.

I am repeatedly amazed at what soontobe does not know about the faith she professes so strongly - or even about her own branch of it. She had never heard the name of John Wesley, the founder of her own Methodist church, or his brother Charles Wesley, whose name is in her hymn-book under a very large number of the Methodist hymns she sings on Sundays - which are sung by other denominations too.

Soon please do not play the teacher as if we are all inferior and you are the only one with knowledge. Perhaps you are a gnostic. I do know what the texts mean that I quoted and do not need to be told by you. Remember you do not know the background of the people you reply to on here. You are entitled to your views but please do not assume that others are infidels. Remember the parable of the sheep and the goats.

soontobe Sun 21-Jun-15 12:49:20

Elegran, of course I have heard of John Wesley and Charles Wesley. I am not sure what as given you the idea that I dont know about them.

But as with everything to do with the Bible and christianity, I will never know all of it.

Greenfinch, I did and do not mean to come across as if I am a teacher, as I am not.
I will have to look up the words gnostic and infidels.
I dont know the backgrounds of the people on here, that is true. And I also tend to forget bits, even when told.

Back later.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 21-Jun-15 12:59:02

Pretty insulting to suggest soon has never heard of the Wesleys! shock. Where did you get that idea Elegran?

Elegran Sun 21-Jun-15 13:00:46

From a reply you made to a post a while ago where the name Wesley was mentioned. You said something like "Who is he?."

jollyg Sun 21-Jun-15 13:18:47

Elegran

This is where this site fails.

As you posted somewhere else the search function is non existent.

I am used to sites where you can access the posters posts, and see what their mindset might be, and quote.

Seems to me this is all about money making , books, and allowing non members to post.

I do still look in, but the structure of the site fails me, and I dont do smileys

Lots of intelligent posters here......... BUT

Elegran Sun 21-Jun-15 13:26:54

I searched for the post I mentioned, but could not find it. There is a time limit of some kind on archived material, not that the search engine finds recent stuff either.

Ana Sun 21-Jun-15 13:28:50

I've found threads from 2011 onwards, Elegran. In fact my Wesley searches only found ancient ones...

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 21-Jun-15 13:31:28

I think "they" don't allow searches by a poster's forum name because it could encourage 'getting at' a particular poster. I heard that mentioned back in Geraldine's time as Editor.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 21-Jun-15 13:33:24

All sites are about money-making. Why would people bother with it all if a profit was not likely to be made. It's a business like any other. Just enjoy and don't worry about it.

Elegran Sun 21-Jun-15 13:33:45

I was searching for "Wesley" Found 11 hits, all in 2011.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 21-Jun-15 13:37:08

I only got 6. Cats named Wesley, a three piece suite, and just one about the Wesleys.

soontobe Sun 21-Jun-15 13:37:20

mcem. Just spotted your last sentence at 9.46pm.
Yes, is the quick answer. I managed it with all my children. I have boys and girls. Since the last of my children has become a christian this week, I dont really see a problem.

soontobe Sun 21-Jun-15 13:37:55

am not pm.

Ana Sun 21-Jun-15 13:43:08

The last one held out for as long as he/she could then, soon? grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 21-Jun-15 13:51:31

grin

loopylou Sun 21-Jun-15 14:02:55

confused
How do you become a christian? Is that as opposed to a heathen? Atheist? gnostic?

soontobe Sun 21-Jun-15 14:03:04

grin I'll tell her that!

loopylou Sun 21-Jun-15 14:03:36

What's a gnostic? Meant 'agnostic'

annodomini Sun 21-Jun-15 15:00:22

As an ex-Presbyterian, and calling myself a Christian Humanist, I am inclined to take exception to the way exponents of a certain brand of born-again Christianity have assumed to themselves the unique right to call themselves 'Christian'. Do they accept that the Pope is Christian or Orthodox patriarchs? Jesus rejected the hard-line legalism of the Old Testament, but many of the fundamentalist sects - especially in America - accept as if they were gospel the laws laid down in Leviticus. There was a wonderful episode of the West Wing (can't remember which series) in which President Bartlet, faced with a bunch of these bigots, quoting OT authority for their bigotry, confounded their statements by quoting other biblical sources.
By calling myself a Christian Humanist, I mean that I accept Christian ethics - see the Sermon on the Mount - although I can't accept its metaphysics.

soontobe Sun 21-Jun-15 15:20:01

loopylou, you become a christian by believing and saying Romans chapter 10, verse 9. And by being and saying sorry for your sins.

loopylou Sun 21-Jun-15 15:24:29

Thank you smile
