Good Morning Monday 20th April 2026
Dr. Laura Slessinger is a well-known conservative talk show host. She has expressed very negative beliefs about homosexuality.
She has firmly supported and advocated biblical morality on her TV and radio shows. The following is a tongue-in-cheek letter seeking Dr. Laura's advice on applying biblical morality and religious duties in today's world. Its author is unknown.
Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When people try to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to follow them:
a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev.1:9).The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7.In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness (Lev.15:19-24).The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
d) Lev.25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev.11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
g) Lev.21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
i) I know from Lev.11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread cotton/polyester blend. He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them (Lev.24:10-16)? Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev.20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you.

I am not convinced that you are genuinely interested.
And I may be boring others on here, so I think it is time I stopped posting on this thread. Goodnight.
What do Jehovah's Witnesses say that you disagree with? What do you mean, mishmash?
Jehovah's Witness appear to mishmash the Bible.
But if they say that, good.
Are you sure you are not a Jehovah's Witness? That's what they say.

Judging behaviour is allowed. Judging a person is not.
Thanks for answering me soon
Anniebach. You and I read the same Bible I presume, and have different views.
I have no idea if my views are the same of different to Donald Soper. I will look him up tomorrow.
soon, I didn't ask for a judgement i only asked why as you are both members of the same church you hold such different views
Try not to judge anyone?
Saying that anything I believe must be wrong is not judging?
I dont know anything about The Potters House.
In rl[unless at church things] I rarely mention God or scripture. I probably should more.
NotTooOld. That is sad. Very sad. I understand where you are coming from.
HUmility is not the same at all as allowing yourself to be stepped on. Which you probably now realise.
I can barely remember Donald Soper. But either way, I try not to judge anyone, christians or non christians.
feetlebaum, that may be so,doesn't mean i as a Christian have to agree with my church on all it's teachings .
Anniebach - I believe the only religion which proclaims the equality of the sexes is Sikhism...
Otherwise it's almost always down to the men to own, control and subjugate the women.
I was brought up a Methodist but gave it up for good when I could decide those things for myself. I remember there was a lot of stuff about 'putting the happiness of others before your own' and much encouragement to remain humble - 'the meek shall inherit the earth' and so forth. It's only in recent years that I've realised why I mistakenly got married at a very young age - I felt I shouldn't make him unhappy by refusing his proposal. How daft was that? Yes, in case you're wondering, it all ended in an early divorce. When I married again and had my children I made sure they were not so humble!
The Potters House has it's roots in Methodism, certainly in this area. Is this where you worship soon? You sound so like my BIL who also has a piece of scripture to suit every occasion.
Actually, I know quite a few Methodists, not one who thinks like soon. I go to their coffee mornings on Saturdays, and discuss all sorts of things with them. Some of them are collecting stuff for refugees. One has a friend, a fellow methodist, who works in Turkey, for a particular charity.
They all seem to think about others rather than spout the Bible all the time.
Are you sure you're a Methodist, soon?
No idea soon, I haven't given a thought to how many books I agree or disagree with. May I ask you something which has puzzled me for quite some time?
I was a devoted Donald Soper follower, use to drive from Wales to London to hear this Saint preach at speakers corner , a Methodist minister, pacifist and socialist , how come you don't share his Christian beliefs , he really was a man of God wasn't he
soon, I did not say I did not accept Paul's books, I did say I have had problems with him since my teens.
No soon, I would not, but I believe we are all equal so how could I? Anyway he didn't say it did he .
If Paul had said that he had heard from God that men were now subject to women, would you then accept his books?
Of the 66 books in the Bible, how many are you agreeing with?
Yes Anya, I am not a fundamentalist and question Paul's teachings on women in society
Fundamentalism is by definition the form of a religion that upholds belief in the strict, literal interpretation of scripture.
Some Christians find his Writings more suited for fundamentalists and lack the love of Christ.
