Cinemas have banned an advert for Christianity, seems The Lords Prayer could offend those of different faiths and of no faith, the secular society supports the ban.

The queen has spoken of the birth in Bethlehem

I am not a member of the Church of England but I ask in their defence,

How are they advertising their church? I hear no mention of ' join the C of E'

How is a PR stunt for the C of E when it is a prayer spoken in most Christian denomination?

It is a Christian prayer not a Church of England prayer , spoken by Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, JW's, Anglican Churches etc

Exactly grumppa.

I do remember the national anthem stampede! It became a sort of competition to see who could get out first.

No objection to the prayer; just object to it being foisted on people who have come to the cinema to watch a nice bit of slaughter and mayhem. grin

Sorry, ajanela I missed your post!

Paul Blanchard in HuffPo reckons it's a PR stunt, pure and simple.

I'm pretty sure I've seen party political films at the cinema and I know I see them endlessly [bored emoticon] on both ITV and BBC before an election.I don't think people of faith find other people of different faiths praying at all upsetting. I once worked in a multi-faith project where people regularly asked for or offered prayers for co-workers' concerns whatever their faith. However, I agree putting that film on might result in unfriendly loud responses. Anyone out there remember the stampede in cinemas at the first notes of the National Anthem?

The queen's message always sounds very universal, and not just directed at ther christian subjects (or just her monarchist ones - she is head of state of the whole country, not just a christian royalist caliphate, or whatever the equivalent is)

Anya Tue 24-Nov-15 08:07:47

That's right grumpa and it doesn't just apply to Christmas and Queen's speech either.

thatbags Tue 24-Nov-15 07:36:02

Exactly, grumppa. The message of peace and goodwill is not owned by christianity either. Atheists believe in and respect all the good ideas in all religions. They just don't need faith in a god or gods to do it.

Showing the Ad in cinemas could result in some very offensive language and behaviour from some present even leading to violence being the worst scenario.

Who remembers them playing the national anthem at the end of the film in the cinema and a mad rush for the door before it started. But once it started most people stood still. Different times.

Good response Grumppa. Reasoned thought.

I imagine the Queen's Christian message, anniebach, will be on the lines of peace on earth and goodwill to men, which is the essential Christmas message. As a laid-back atheist I would have no difficulty in agreeing with it and respecting it, and the same would go for any comparable message from any religion. The message is more important than what it is wrapped up in.

Ana Mon 23-Nov-15 21:33:57

In the 2011 Census for England and Wales, 59.3% of the usual resident population (33.2 million people) identified as Christian.

Anniebach Mon 23-Nov-15 21:31:37

As the majority are not Christian how can they agree or respect her Christian message ? I do think she will do far less of the Christian message though

rosequartz Mon 23-Nov-15 19:37:11

But Jingle, the majority who listen to her think she is talking rubbish
Is that intended as an oxymoron confused

Surely the majority who listen to her agree with her and respect her opinions.
The ones who may think it is rubbish presumably wouldn't bother to watch hmm

janeainsworth Mon 23-Nov-15 19:35:16

It's not compulsory to watch the Queen's speech anyway confused

rosequartz Mon 23-Nov-15 19:32:58

So murder, rape, theft, is acceptable but not a prayer

I suppose some of the trailers for some of the horrible films are adverts

What are they advertising for exactly - adverts usually promote something and are a commercial enterprise so presumably they are 'advertising Christianity'.
What would Jesus say about that?
Rather like the money changers in the temple only in reverse.

Ana Mon 23-Nov-15 19:31:01

What a sweeping statement, anniebach - how do you know what the majority thinks? hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 23-Nov-15 19:26:00

Only in your tiny mind ab. (what sort of people do you mix with? confused)

thatbags Mon 23-Nov-15 19:25:29

Of course the Queen is attention seeking in her Christmas message. If she didn't want our attention she wouldn't be doing the message.

But my point was not that I regard the CoE wanting to tell people to say the Lord's Prayer as attention-seeking, but the threat to sue the cinema chain for not showing it, when it's perfectly obvious that the reason given is a sound one. It is said that all publicity is good publicity. I suppose the Archbish is banking on that.

Anya Mon 23-Nov-15 19:24:35

So murder, rape, theft, is acceptable but not a prayer ?

Do they really advertise these Annie confused

Anniebach Mon 23-Nov-15 18:46:18

But Jingle, the majority who listen to her think she is talking rubbish grin

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 23-Nov-15 18:33:33

ab you try to stop her! grin

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 23-Nov-15 18:32:34

I don't think that was banned rq. Perhaps it should have been. winkgrin

The church is useful for the hatched, matched and dispatched brigade , this I do think is hypocritical,

I close friend - who is a priest - had the funniest newspaper coverage a few years ago. A couple arrange the baptism of their baby, my friend met the godparents , two declared they were atheists but had agreed to be godparents because they were close friends of the parents, my friend refused to allow the baptism to take place with atheist godparents, the parents went to the press which declared a baby had been turned away from a church because the child was named after a film role ! So funny but what fibbers , why not tell the truth, my friend would not give the press the truth because he thought it wrong to do so
