Lords Prayer advert banned

Cinemas have banned an advert for Christianity, seems The Lords Prayer could offend those of different faiths and of no faith, the secular society supports the ban.

I don't know how much you question rosequartz , I don't know how much or how many priests question, I do know that it is not at all unusual , if you think about their calling , there are surely questions you and I will never have to grapple with. The Bish spoke of his despair of that attack, he shared that moment with us and shared the answer he received

I am fine thanks Crafting. There are actually quite a number of religious threads that I either dont answer on, or only briefly.

I roughly agree with Eloethan's first sentence of her first post. But I have mixed feelings too, so decided to stay out of it. I can see all sides really.

He came on an errand jings smile

Did your vicar really pop in rq? I didn't think that still happened. (Thank the Lord)

rosequartz Thu 26-Nov-15 17:54:02

Not as much as me, though, surely?

Anniebach Thu 26-Nov-15 17:53:36

Rosequartz , there is no reason to think the Bish isn't strong and faithful , I think you will find many priests agree with me on this . Do you really believe no priest ever questions - why?

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 26-Nov-15 17:49:32

As the 'Charlie' happenings illustrated so forcefully.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 26-Nov-15 17:47:52

"Hallowed be Thy name". That could well apply to Muslims and Allah.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 26-Nov-15 17:46:50

I don't know any Muslim prayers but I would think, if there is one as simple, as innocuous, and as 'one-size-fits-all' as the Lords Prayer, many people would be glad to hear it.

In fact, I think they should make a similar advert.

rosequartz Thu 26-Nov-15 17:44:03

I would think Star Wars is a highly inappropriate film to promote any religion
Except Jediism?

rosequartz Thu 26-Nov-15 17:40:56

Rosequartz , why shouldn't the Bish think the same as you

anniebach I should hope that the Archbishop would be strong and faithful as the leader of the Anglicans - I would never even become a lay preacher without having a profound faith.
The vicar popped in today, I should have asked him his opinion but he was in a rush (as usual).

Eloethan Thu 26-Nov-15 17:24:58

jingle She says:

"It is no great effort to imagine the reaction in the tabloid press had another faith group or a secular body attempted to run a similar advertisement." Doesn't she have a point?

It is not an attack on free speech. The advertisement is not "banned". Thousands of people have seen it.

I think there is a similar argument to be had with regard to all enclosed public spaces. Whilst I agreed wholeheartedly with Benedict Cumberbatch's sentiments re our government's response to the refugee crisis, I did not feel it was right that he should impose his views on a "captive audience" who might find it awkward to get up, say in the middle of a row, and disturb (or annoy) other theatre goers.

Never thought of the Lords Prayer as a comparison with after the watershed tv progs or trashy childrens toys

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 26-Nov-15 17:08:29

Sorry ja. I CBA.

janeainsworth Thu 26-Nov-15 17:07:16

Kathleen Jowitt: author of Speak Its Name, English graduate, cyclist, eco-worrier, bisexual, Christian humanist of the Broad Church Anglican variety, liberal socialist, trade unionist, lover of hats, Quaker sympathiser, and slightly bewildered Cambridge resident.

Which bit of her bio do you take exception to jingl?
And what difference does it make to the validity of what she says?

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 26-Nov-15 16:12:14

Why would she have felt "uncomfortable"? confused Sensitive little flower is she.

She looks, and from her description, sounds weird. Wouldn't listen to a thing she says. Typical of the Twittersphere.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 26-Nov-15 16:08:30

I just don't believe the Church would have let it get this far unless they expected it to be shown.

Eloethan Thu 26-Nov-15 16:07:28

Have you read Kathleen Jowitt's letter *Anniebach"? Don't you think she makes some very good points?

janeainsworth Thu 26-Nov-15 16:00:04

ab that's like wondering why it's not ok to show violence and sex before the 9 o'clock watershed, but it is ok to advertise trashy children's toys when children are watching TV.
There is no connectionconfused

Alea Thu 26-Nov-15 15:59:15

Can of worms better for your teeth than a can of pop, anyway?

thatbags Thu 26-Nov-15 15:52:28

Fanciful me, jings, but read that Jowitt article. She's an anglican and is disgusted too.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 26-Nov-15 15:50:37

That's a bit fanciful Bags. grin

Luckygirl Thu 26-Nov-15 15:49:55

Well said Kathleen Jowitt - sums it all up perfectly.

I shall be hopping mad if they start any law suits - what a waste of money!

Anniebach Thu 26-Nov-15 15:48:16

Cigarettes were advertised at one time in cinemas , just curious why a prayer in a cinema is so strongly criticised but alcohol is accepted

thatbags Thu 26-Nov-15 15:45:27

for a religious setup.
