Does he (or she) exist?
In what way does he impact people's lives?

Smileless2012 Wed 25-Jan-23 19:36:13

No that is not what you said nadateturbe as the quote Blondiescot has used clearly shows, so I don't understand why it's been suggested that you didconfused.

Thank you Smileless2012.

Nanadeturb, would you still attribute a colourful sunset to God once you knew it was caused by a catastrophic forest fire, or urban pollution?

nadateturbe Thu 26-Jan-23 14:02:10

So there are no beautiful sunsets without these things?

Caleo Thu 26-Jan-23 23:49:19

Nadateturbe, I mean beauty can fool you into thinking it's also good.

Smileless2012 Fri 27-Jan-23 00:01:31

Apparently the rainbow was originally discovered in 984 AD by Ibn Sahl of Baghdad. No mention of catastrophic forest fires and I doubt there was any urban pollution.

GrannyRose15 the world would not be very meaningful to me without my faith.

I do find this very sad. But that is OK. It is your life, private, and I am glad your faith gives you meaning.

As long as you agree that it should be totally separate from the running of the country, its Laws, education, etc.

Why do you find this sad? Why do you think not believing in God makes your life more meaningful?

Caleo, there are things I don't understand but beauty and the appreciation of beauty is, I believe, a gift from God.

Appreciation of beauty needs to be tempered with appreciation of reason which is also a gift from God.

Not the point, I know, but an old-ish film I’d love to watch again is The Devil’s Advocate (IIRC) in which an ambitious young lawyer lands a ‘plum’ job in a law firm that turns out to be not what it seems.
An excellent twist at the end IIRC.

As I recall the devil was played all too believably by Al Pacino.
Must have a look on Netflix, but alas they don’t often have anything I really fancy watching.

That was a great film Witzend. Its shows how a mythical figure may be part of a really good story.

I've never ever said I wanted a world without religion btw? Where. I said it should be a private matter, and that Governement and all linked institutions should be freed from religious influence.

What you want is actually impossible. Everyone brings their private beliefs and values into whatever job they are doing. Sometimes overtly, sometimes without even knowing they are doing it. Therefore you cannot have government without religious influence.

I agree. One reason lockdown was so very bleak for me was I was prevented from spending one hour a week in a very beautiful place listening to uplifting music.

Depends what you mean by 'the devil'. if you mean the guy woth horns and cloven feet and a large fork, No I doubt it.

A spirit of evil? Like Putin?

nadateturbe Tue 31-Jan-23 22:57:12

I'm sure you missed that very much GrannyRose.
However the good thing was many churches started streaming services and have continued to do so.

I agree with your post of 22 41. Hadn't actually thought of that.

Satan is more interesting the the Devil.

Bridgeit Tue 14-Feb-23 16:35:31

More interesting? Could you expand a little?

red1 Wed 01-Mar-23 17:21:21

humans created god who created the devil,in christianity, give that to a young mind,a great way to instill fear. However when i look at the world, i have to think that it is run by the devil or at least dark forces, as for where is god in this? i believe tentatively in a deist god.The subject of good(god) evil(devil) is vast and has been debated ad finitum,I like the quote 'the devil comes as everything you ever wanted'

The 'Devil' was invented by the church in the Middle Ages to keep the masses in fear. The mentions of the Devil in the Bible are not references to the same being. The Devil mentioned in the story of Lot for example was a member of God's court. Religion is a device for keeping the people in order and Heaven is simply an example of jam tomorrow. That's why the Tories are so keen on religion.

This absolutely..
