That is the message of the church service of the Coronation. It's also the core of Chivalry which at its best is an arm of the Christian message.

Again, why be concerned with a God one does not believe in.

Smileless2012 Tue 09-May-23 14:32:15

The lesson Jesus was teaching when he told the rich young man to give up all his wealth and follow him, was that wealth be it the desire to acquire it and/or the 'worship' of what has already been acquired it can distract those who have it from seeking the kingdom of God.

You don't have to poor to be a Christian and/or be against the acquisition of wealth as long as you don't put wealth before God.

Sorry, rereading that, you meant your grandmothers would have been homeless and starved. So would mine. I read it as meaning H & M.

There are various kinds of lack of choice.

In the words of "I Was Glad", Psalm 122, I am pleased you say it was all a load of tosh Glorianny. That justifiably allows us to call your attempts to defend M & H's lives of service "a load of tosh" too.

Don't think I have ever "defended M&H's lives of service" simply said that they should be free to do as they wish and they do a lot of charity work.
Being "in service" was what happened to both my grandmothers at age 13, and I'm pretty sure neither Charles nor M&H would have a clue about that.

Just like your grandmothers, he has had no choice in the matter.

Of course he has. He could abdicate. He would still be disgustingly rich, if they'd left they would have been homeless and starved

Except for about £40 million left to H by his mother . . .

Isn't the point about wealth that if you believe Jesus was God's voice on earth then you know what God thinks about it. Unfortunately for many Christians that doesn't seem to translate into actions. They continue to acquire wealth.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 09-May-23 13:19:06

Strange isn’t it it? Maybe subconscious hedging of bets is at play.

Anniebach Tue 09-May-23 12:49:54

I am puzzled why atheists ask what God thinks , if there is no God it’s a silly question

Would God approve of our monarchy and it's wealth? I am having trouble with this question. All our local churches had Coronation parties, and I'm not sure I want to attend atm. Perhaps one of those who believe in God could give me their views.

I'm not sure how God would feel about our monarchy nadateturbe but I am reminded of a quote by Oliver Cromwell, a deeply religious man.
It's an odd thing, Mr. Ireton. Every man who wages war believes God is on his side. I'll warrant God should often wonder who is on his.

Mollygo Tue 09-May-23 12:44:02

Would God approve?
Even on GN, where people know the most amazing things, I’ve never heard anyone claim to know what God thinks.
I’d like to know whether posters think God would disapprove, and whether His disapproval would extend to all wealth, or be limited to King Charles?

If Charles did pay for any part of the coronation we wouldn’t know, they don’t speak of money they give.

And if we were told, the next comments would automatically be not enough.

That is a good point Louis. Let it be noted that the star of the show, Penny Mordaunt ,paid for her own costume from her own slender means.

biglouis Tue 09-May-23 11:59:37

A good start for his "reign" would be for Charles to pick up the tab for a substantial part of the coronation.

Caleo Tue 09-May-23 11:56:42

Bizziebe, I think so too. He may be the best monarch we ever had, better than his mother.

Bizziebe Tue 09-May-23 11:23:46

Without getting too poetic, I myself can feel deeply religious when I marvel at the radiant beauty in nature. Charles we know experiences such emotions. Just trying to offer thought here.

Bizziebe Tue 09-May-23 11:20:20

But all my readings over the past 50 years do not lead me to believe that Charles is a 'deeply religious man'- which is why I would be grateful to be given evidence of this. I am not expecting anything from anyone- just a polite request.
I guess it depends on how much a deeply religious person publicly professes their faith. So Charles could be more deeply religious than the Pope, but just because he doesn't pray over his people every day and wear robes we might perceive him as less so?

Maddyone, the unfortunate thing about the Coronation service is exactly what you point out. The Church of England must be disestablished . A disestablished church is in a position to instruct the monarch that he is too rich and must be more socialist, like Jesus.

Matthew 19. 24
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”

Bizziebe Tue 09-May-23 11:09:09

Glorianny I also have a bit of problem with transgression in the Christian faith. For example, when a Catholic can go to confession and have their sins forgiven, how many times, I don't know. Isn't it something like 77 times forgiveness in the Bible?

Fleurpepper Tue 09-May-23 11:08:24

Germanshepherdsmum

I suggest you do a little reading Fleurpepper. You will discover for yourself that the king, like his mother, is deeply religious, rather than expecting others to provide evidence for you.

I have, and I remember him being very clear some years back, that when he accessed the Throne he would respect the fact that the UK is now a very multicultural country, with many Faiths, and that the Christian Church itself is now many facetted, and that this should be respecte. He got William to say so on his behalf, but had no choice but to bow to tradition and the massive power of the CofE.

But all my readings over the past 50 years do not lead me to believe that Charles is a 'deeply religious man'- which is why I would be grateful to be given evidence of this. I am not expecting anything from anyone- just a polite request. And I don't think Camila is either.

maddyone Tue 09-May-23 11:07:47

I enjoyed the events on Saturday enormously and found it to be very uplifting, but I do struggle with the sheer wealth of the monarchy and the Christian ideals. I really struggle with this. I’m not concerned about the divorce, I’m not aware that Jesus said anything about divorce, but he did about wealth.

Caleo Tue 09-May-23 10:58:07

Nobody , including King Charles himself, thinks the King is Jesus Christ. What we are all called to do is imitate JC as much as we can. I support King Charles in his efforts to do so.

The personal wealth of the monarch is a different issue. The land itself must be in public not private ownership, and this principle of public ownership is consistent with a monarch who is a sincere Christian. The king is by no means the only private owner of far too much land!

Anniebach Tue 09-May-23 10:47:54

Has Charles ever said his marriage vows were not keepable ?
Diana made the same vows and broke them
