Do you say prayers?

I’ve just been reading social media posts to someone who has been bereaved, and many say things like, ‘ My thoughts and prayers are with you’. This made me wonder how many of these people would actually pray for the bereaved person, and being the cynic that I am, I’d guess not many, and the Facebook post will be as far as it goes.
I’m not a big prayer as such, but I do like a wee quiet time in church.
Do people still do the kneeling by the bed at night kind of praying?

I believe in the power of prayer and do pray regularly. My friend’s mother impressed me with her strength of faith before she passed away and I just envied her commitment to her faith.

Nonbeliever , so no I don’t pray.
I will of course keep someone in my thoughts and feel for them.

I do pray sometimes but I am not a Christian. I just know there must be a higher power when I look at the incredible world we inhabit.

Some of you may be interested in something I was introduced to by someone I met on holiday. It is called Christian Art and can be accessed online. Every day there is a different painting followed by a Bible reading and a reflection on the painting. It can be an aid to prayer or just food for thought. I often turn to it in the night if sleep eludes me. Just type in Christian art and go to the gospel reading of the day.

Another non-believer, so no.

Yes I do pray, but not the kneeling down at night kind of praying. I also like to read daily reading Devotionals from the Christian bookshop and I have my own Bibles to refer to.

When we were growing up, we always got together for the family. ‘Rosary’- in front of our altar. It was a bit monotonous and repetitive. These days, although I carry the Roasary Beads in my handbag, I do not have the patience. I go to Church, I pray, but it’s more of a ‘chat’ with God. I do say a short poem-like prayer and the same in the morning. Our church is always open. If I happen to pass by, I always pop in for a few minutes.

That is interesting Marydoll. Thank you for that.

I am a spiritual pilgrim so do pray to a higher power rather than to a set deity. I did go to our local parish church but it was so cliquey and run by a few post families and I met this totally disrespectful individual that it put me right off. I am sure that if said with faith and hope then prayers do get answered.

My go to is the Virgin Mary, a tradition in the Catholic Church. She never lets me down.

When DD was very ill, the lovely old lady in the next bed to her told me to pray to the Virgin Mary. I felt very uncomfortable about this as it was totally alien to the Anglican tradition I was brought up in .I still ponder about that.

I have started praying again, funnily enough- getting to that age where friends & family have declining health- pray they have peaceful outcomes

If I have a crisis with the cats I pray to St Francis. He's usually pretty reliable

I was finished by sunday school. They said we were all sinners, little me décided i was a 'good girl' and stopped listening.

Same here! As soon as I realised you were meant to 'believe' and not ask questions, I was done.

I pray but not really because I believe ( I used to) - because I care & there's nothing else I can do & it keeps us it touch with our humanity.

Yes, I pray at meals and bedtime.

Oldbat1 Mon 02-Sept-24 19:27:42

I am a non believer!

Cossy Mon 02-Sept-24 19:24:17

I pray, every night, thought I’m not quite sure what or whom I’m praying too and sometimes feel I’m hedging my bets.

I do pray and I believe strongly in the power of prayer.

I put out an appeal in April here on Gransnet to pray for someone who was given a very poor prognosis.
Many of you prayed and you must have prayed hard because she is doing remarkably well.
Not out of the woods but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you again.

🙏

The nuns finished me off with religion of any sort at the age of 17.
