Shall we gather at the river and other beautiful hymns

My dad's favourite hymn was 'Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross.' It was played at his funeral.l love traditional hymns, particularly Christmas ones. In the bleak midwinter, love came down at Christmas, the first Noel etc al.

Just a few that I remember my dear Dad singing as we undertook long car journeys.

I love most of the traditional hymns and carols. A special favourite is ‘Eternal Father Strong To Save’ (for those in peril on the sea) - it was my father’s favourite - during WW2 he was in the RN and was lucky to survive 2 years of the Battle of the Atlantic. We played it at his funeral.

Witzend that was my late exfil's favourite too. He was in the Fleet Air arm in WW2 and his mother used to weep while singing it in church

And I really love O Come O Come Emmanuel, which they’re playing just now on Classic. It was always the first we ever sang during Advent at school - so it was very exciting, because it meant Christmas was coming.

It is the old tunes that are most evocative. New ones seem to be both over-simplified and unmemorable - and old lyrics married to new tunes are unsingable too.

My singing group is doing a beautiful song that I hadn’t heard before: Do You Hear What I Hear? (although not that old).

I was listening to this beautiful old hymn and thinking we rarely hear these old hymns these days - not in my church anyway ( Presbyterian). A pity ,because I would hate for them to be lost. Another one is Nearer my God to Me, always brings tears to my eyes. The one they played at the sinking of the Titanic. Tell us some other lovely ones!

Onward Christian Soldiers has always been my favourite. A rousing hymn.

My favourite since childhood is “Hills of the North Rejoice” and From Greenland’s Icy Mountains” (even when we had no idea where Greenland was!).
Also “All Creatures of our God and King”
“Glad that I live am I”
“I Vow to thee my country” and
“Dear Lord and Father of Mankind”. I do love a good rousing hymn.

The first time I heard that hymn, apart from in films, was at a service on a cruise ship, where there were lot of Americans. Goosebumps time!

Dear Lord and Father of Mankind always reminds me of school assemblies.

Love all the Christmas Carols. Going to two Carol concerts this December.

Some Easter hymns are lovely - Thine Be The Glory, and There Is A Green Hill Far Away.

Oh Gosh a trip down memory lane there. Shall We Gather by the River and Hills of the North Rejoice. The latter number 64 in
the hymn book. I used to look for it with eager anticipation.

" Isles of the Southern Seas" Wonderful words.

I have to admit,having revisited the words of From Greenland’s Icy Mountain, they do exude an element of missionary zeal that I find unpalatable these days. It was of it’s time I suppose.

My grandmother used to always sing " Shall we gather by the River" while doing her housework. I would give alot to just hear her singing it again, also every time I hear it played I want to cry.

Yes, it was sung at my father's funeral too.
