She was not making a speech about gender - she was talking about compassion. How anyone could possibly have missed that point is beyond me.

Now here is a truly brave woman, who has put her career on the line here, as a true Christian who really understands what Christianity is about.
Trump, Malania, Vance and families, were just trapped there, and could not walk out or stop her. Stunning and so full of humanity.

The trans bit is what I don’t condone. Born in the wrong body?
I’m with JKR on this issue. And the Cass report.
In some cultures being a male ‘gay’ would be very problematic. So a young male who fancies boys daren't tell his family so being ‘born in the wrong body’ becomes acceptable. Let’s not forget that in Afghanistan for example, gays would be shoved of a roof to their death.
Being ‘born in the wrong body’ therefore swerves the ‘gay tag’ and those families can come to terms with that a bit better.
Yes, I am concerned for her. I do believe she is fully aware and has thought about it very long and hard- and decided extremely bravely, that she would say what she had to say.
Christian compassion is wrong to some people, it seems, and clerics who promote it are seen as in need of " educating". What a time we live in.
After the sycophantic way people were bobbing up and down listening to Trump's smug speech it was so refreshing to hear this courageous, compassionate woman.. and yes amusing to watch Trumps rigid expression..
I hope she doesn't suffer any repercussions

Now this is encouraging.
'Inflammatory and hyperbolic nonsense.'
oh yes, massively.
What she said
there are gay, lesbian and transgender children, who are scared, in Democratic, Republican and Independent families, and some who fear for their lives (illegal workers).
How is that encouraging or even condoning encouraging children to 'become' transgender.
Yes, the Worriedwell- just an appalling way of distracting from the real message of the Bishop's address.
I listened to the Bishop's address/sermon and was impressed by her compassion. I too admire her for speaking out.

Since when has Christian compassion been "rubbish"?
She stood up against a megalomaniac for those whose lives are endangered by him. Sadly she will pay the price. I applaud her. She reminded this so-called Christian president that every person matters and that love and compassion should be central to our lives.
I think focusing on the trans issue is a way of diverting people from all the other things she said, we all know there are people who are shall we say very focused on this issue and will ignore anything else.
The whole thing is about othering other people, we forget the maid is a woman, maybe escaping poverty or violence and trying to have a normal life, maybe she has children born in the USA so will they go back to that violence and poverty with her or will they get left to an already overburdened care system? Doesn't matter to some as they just buy into Trump's message.
I think it is also troubling that kindness is being treated as some sort of deviance but I am encouraged that children have voted it as the word of the year for 2024. Well done kids.

There are no 'trans' children. No-one is born in the 'wrong’' body.
If this bishop wants to protect children she should thank Trump for allowing vulnerable kids to grow up & possibly to be gay/lesbian, in time.
Please, just do not derail this thread. The Bishop did NOT encourage anyone to be trans or not- she asked for compassion for all, yes, even those who 'feel' very strongly, that they are in the'wrong' body. What you or I think about it is totally irrelevant here.
What a brave woman.

It will be very telling if her personal safety is compromised now that a ready formed army of Trump defenders has been released from prison.
Inflammatory and hyperbolic nonsense.
Vance is the one who looks particularly awkward to me. He is constantly looking at his wife (for reassurance? )...
I think this is the same Bishop who called out Trump in 2020 for posing with a bible for a publicity shot outside a church without going in.

Some of the original details have been corrected in this account.
Trans gender people are a part of it but I wonder how many gardeners, maids, fruit pickers, labourers and so on who are immigrants are now in fear for their safety. I am a bit concerned that a call for kindness is being called rubbish on here. What are we coming to?

Did she mention 'trans' children in her speech?
I was very impressed with her measured delivery and her sheer guts in speaking truth to power.
There is hope for America after all- seeing the Trump family squirm under her compassionate and understanding words made my day. They didn’t look like they were ‘squirming’ to me. Just bored and verging on laugher at the rubbish being spoken.
Melania didn't look like she was on the verge of laughter. Face like a smacked arse springs to mind.
Have those on here denying or condemning trans people actually ever met any in person?
Who is denying or condemning transpeople on here? It’s so hard to respond to vague comments like that. It’s still a short thread, so you can’t be referring to many posters. Why not just address them directly?
TopsyIrene06
Brave lady and not an idiot.
👏👏👏
I wonder what Musk thinks of Trump's stance on transgender - hasn't he got a transgender child?
foxie48
Agree or disagree about transgender issues but at least we don't lock them up or kill them. They do in some countries which is IMO a reason for them to claim asylum and to treat them without prejudice wherever they are born.
👏👏👏👏👏
Allsorts
Puberty is a very confusing time for many, you have to get through that before life changing decisions are made. I would say over 21.
I didn't hear her speak but defend the right to, jf it isn't hate speech or intended to promote violence,
I completely agree, I don’t think any physical or any other kind of action should take place until after puberty has taken place, however, to deny such feelings exist or just to ignore doesn’t help those very real feelings some people have.

Someone please send her a copy of the UK Cass report. The lady vicar idiot needs educating.
Wow!!!!
So how do you explain that there are people who genuinely believe that they are “born in the wrong body” These feelings are often far more apparent around puberty, perhaps you believe these people are mentally ill? Bit like gay people were treated.
Please don’t condemn something just because you don’t understand it.
What about those in the USA who’ve already transitioned? How are their lives going to be affected?
Well done the Bishop! Long may she reign.
