Pope Leo XIV

A very swift conclave. He must have been a popular choice amongst the cardinals. He was clearly emotional standing on the balcony and surveying the crowds below.

The first US Cardinal to be elected as Pope.

I wouldn't mind betting that Donald Trump thinks it's all down to him.

Call him whatever you like, it doesn't change his title. And I think he's known as Rob to his family, I guess Pope Rob might seem appropriate to some people!

His brother has given interviews to BBC and ITV , he seems to love the camera

It doesn't seem quite the thing really for his brother to be doing interviews about him.

Why not?

Agree farmgran he started with the news of Pope Leo
announcement, cheers for Rob with hands punching the air,
does the world need / want to know what he asked the Pope
what he had watched on tv the day before.

They doorstopped the brothers - it’s a media frenzy in the US. I do hope they get bored and move on to the next best thing soon. It’s exploitative- like when they followed that poor Thomas Markle around.

The thing is Pope Leo’s of Italian and French ancestry, and left the US many many years ago for Peru, and Rome. His brothers stayed in Chicago.

Just because you’re born in a stable doesn’t make you a horse.

I think Trump and Vance are going to hear some truths from Pope Leo.

Already the US right wing hawks are calling him an anti American Marxist. It’s like they believe consumerist capitalism and unchecked greed are the only American values worth blowing a horn about.

Pope's have families and friends, why is it seen as unseemly for them to celebrate and be proud? The new Pope's brother just seems like a regular sort of guy to me, proud as punch of his brother and why on earth not?

The pope has just called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Good man

I expect the brother is a pleasant person, for me discussing
a chat about tv viewing on such a day wasn’t necessary, can
accept others think differently,

M0nica Sun 11-May-25 18:15:35

Well, if I had a brother, who had become Pope (we are Irish catholics, I just do not have a brother) I would be over the moon and willing to talk to all and sundry about it.

Anniebach Sun 11-May-25 18:31:36

I am sure you would, I would not.

I suspect it was pretty difficult to get rid of the media, add to that some excitement and brotherly pride I found it a bit indiscreet but shows how normal they are.
