Checked my Nectar app just now, they have introduced a new feature "lock your points" which means they can't be spent by anyone else. Easily unlocked when card owner wants to spend them.
I imagine this has been introduced because stolen points has been a growing problem.

Scams and fraud
Someone stole my Nectar Points
(45 Posts)and used them in a garage. However, after numerous phone calls and some very helpful support staff, my old card has been cancelled and a new one set up with my points reinstated Oh God what a performance
all that took ages, almost annoying as finding out that my accrued points had disappeared.
Has anyone else had their loyalty card points used fraudulently?
I've just had £80+ pounds reinstated. My card ended up with a negative points balance!
I've just been on the Nectar Card chat line (via the official website) to report two instances of points being redeemed (4,000 points each time) in July and on 20 November this year.
Thank you so much for this thread, without it I wouldn't even have checked my account! The chat line was very helpful and they are sending me a new Nectar card and reinstating all the stolen points plus any that were left on my old card. Took about 10 minutes to sort out.
I've been thinking about this. Between topcashback nectar and jamdoughnut I have about £300 for a Christmas shop. Id hate to lose it but I think I wouldn't even notice it if I spent it £2.50 at a time so I've decided I'll withdraw the money regularly and put it in a dedicated Christmas saving account. I hope it works. I'll get a bit of interest on top so a winwin
I've just had almost £500 worth of Nectar points removed from my account in an unauthorised Argos transaction. This fraud clearly continues. It looks like an inside job since somebody seems to be targetting accounts worth several hundred. Someone must be able to identify them.
There was an article in DM This is Money the other day, on the subject of stolen Nectar points, it's not uncommon. It does seem that those who have been affected by this have had their points stolen when buying petrol, which is when I think my card was somehow cloned and my points were used for petrol in a garage in Enfield, nowhere near me. One woman, who was having problems getting her points reinstated, was advised by Sainsburys to go to the garage and advise them this is where the fraud probably emanated from, but it would be hard to substantiate that. Even more ridiculous "report it to the Police" Sainsburys must be having a laugh! I'm sure the Police have more pressing matters to deal with than stolen Nectar points they don't even come out for mass shoplifting at targeted Co-ops. I was lucky I did get my points, about £75 worth credited back but it's not automatic it would seem.
Just come on here to report about my Nectar points being stolen, and saw that I would not need to start a new thread.
I only ever use nectar points for the occasional change over to cash for my Sainsbury's on-line shopping. Over the past few weeks it kept telling me how many points I had and that this could be exchanged for just a couple of pounds, yet I was sure that usually kept enough there so that, in an emergency, I could do a whole weeks shop (so around 40 to 50 pounds).
I am veery careful at keeping a check on both my Bank Account and Credit card account each morning, to be assured that nothing fraudulent is occurring. Never occurred to me about Nectar points. I assumed that there had been a change in the rules with some sort of cut-off time when I lost my accrued points. Only because I was querying something else on the phone to Sainsbury's that I asked how I go about querying something on Nectar and they gave me a telephone number. I rang this, and was told that ecords showed that I converted most of my points for cash three months ago 150 miles from where I live (and a place I have never been to). They were very helpful, and have refunded all those points back to me and are sending me a new cart.
Fee so silly that it has take me so long to query this and letting the criminals get away with it. Will now check each week when I do my Sainsbury''s shopping order.
Yes had Nectar points stolen on Ebay ( I had linked the card but not actually bought anything myself)
Nectar sent new card and reinstated all points (about £50 worth) thankfully
Lately having trouble with the linking of my Sainsburys online account to my nectar points. I go through the linkage procedure and it tells me I am linked. I see the points on my checkout but the next time I go into it they are no longer there until I link again. Getting fed up with this as it takes a while - email, passwords, card number etc. So now I leave it for a few weeks and grab them to spend when I can.
Yes some years ago I had all our Tesco points stolen. My husband and I had had our names put on the same card. We always saved our points to give us something towards the christmas shopping and never spent them before that. My husband went to get the shopping with the points only to be told that they had already been spent. When he was adamant that they had not been used and eventually we found that someone had taken his name from the card added another name and then used the card to spend all the points down near london someowhere. It was very stressful as we worried that someone had hacked into all our details and we changed everything . It caused a lot of stress and we lost the cheaper offers before christmas but tesco did restore all the points to us after christmas . I am extremely cautions about giving out any financial information and do not use a card for anyone that I do not know , but still feel that we are at risk of scammers
I know you can lock the card ( I think we have ) well, I hope so as we have over £800 worth ! We haven't used them in over 12 years.

Sorry if this is stating the obvious, but does everyone know that you can spend (and gain) Nectar points on eBay, but only until the end of August? I collect them, and have often used them on eBay as you can get so much on there, and the discount from points is useful. I don't know why they are stopping the collaboration, but if anyone's got their eye on something, get in before the end of the month.
Thanks Doodledog.
I'll have to check my nectar points on Ebay.
Yes I had some of my Nectar points stolen a few weeks ago. What a palaver getting them reimbursed! And no explanation or apology from Nectar! Can’t really understand how this can happen!
Yes, just a couple of weeks ago.
£25 in points spent fraudulently on line in London.
Contacted Nectar. What a palaver to get a new card, change passwords and still waiting to be credited with missing points.-and the rest. Supposedly takes 28 days
Will definitely be spending them rather than saving them upon the future.
This happened to me a few years ago. I had been saving for ages hoping to get a nearly free Christmas shop. I rarely shop there now and it was difficult to get a replacement card I did not bother.
If they were marginally more helpful they would not lose so many customers.
Yes, £60 worth. Our points were reinstated and had some additional bonus points. Sometimes, Sainsbury's own staff are the culprits

I have been unable to access my Nectar points for years or use my Sainsbury's online account. Sometime during lockdown, after I applied for priority delivery slots, they froze the two accounts and I was locked out.
I have tried numerous times since to sort this out but Sainsbury's have been totally unhelpful and obstructive.
I even wrote a letter and mailed it to head office, I received a totally unhelpful generic reply and nothing was done to remedy the situation.
The same has happened to me, the last time I used my points must be more than 10 years ago now. My account is frozen and they've been totally unhelpful. I've retaliated by simply not shopping in Sainsbury's at all, Tesco's gain and their Clubcard is much more rewarding.
Sainsbury's used to be a wonderful shop but now it is just like everywhere else.
Terribull I’ll certainly not let mine build up again.

I had mine stolen last weekend. £40 used for petrol in Wiltshire. I live in Co Durham. The physical card never leaves the house, I use the one on my phone. After three hours going round in circles with Nectar my old card was cancelled and a new one issued. They gave me the number so I could re link my Sainsburys grocery app. They wouldn’t promise to reinstate the £40 but I might get it back within 30 days. None yet, but I’m getting my points on my grocery delivery. It’s fortunate that I’d already spent the £150 I had previously.
That's really annoying Grandmachrisy I got my points back pretty quickly. Fraudulent appropriation of loyalty points isn't the consumer's fault, and I think when this happens Nectar should make it their business to reinstate points. I perceive my card to somehow have been cloned in Sainsbury's petrol station, the only place where my physical card is used, which makes me not want to bother to use it there anymore. Luckily you had already used the bulk of your points, like most I just save them up until Christmas. Losing them like this is somewhat of a salutary warning, maybe not to do that.
I lost £62.50 worth last Saturday. They showed on my nectar account as redemeed. I have my card. Who ever it was spent £3 and then later redeemed the points. I live in SE London and the card was used in Dunstable. I spent last Sunday morning messaging Nectar to sort it out, they agreed it was suspicious activity, currently waiting for a new card to arrive with my points in. From now on I won’t be saving the points on card I will be spending them
as soon as they are earnt.

I had my Nectar points stolen too, it was a few years ago and they were spent in a Argos shop in London apparently, I am no where near London and my card is always in my purse. I did get them back and I seem to remember they gave me some extra points. I don't build up the points now and spend them regularly.
I have the Waitrose App on my phone linked to my Waitrose card which offers two discounts a week, slight reduction on items frequently bought but I also have a free nominated newspaper irrespective of how much I spend Quite a saving on Sunday ST is now £4.50,
Ido nto have a nectar card, but do have a 'My Waitrose card. I also have a John Lewis credit card. the credit card gives me points for everything I buy and double points when I shop in Waitrose or John Lewis and about ecery quarter sends me a voucher.
By th ened of the year I usually have enough vouchers to pay for most of my Christmas week food bill.
