Someone stole my Nectar Points

and used them in a garage. However, after numerous phone calls and some very helpful support staff, my old card has been cancelled and a new one set up with my points reinstated Oh God what a performanceangry all that took ages, almost annoying as finding out that my accrued points had disappeared.

Has anyone else had their loyalty card points used fraudulently?

ExDancer Wed 21-Aug-24 10:30:14

Not to my knowledge.
How on earth did it happen?
Did they find out who stole them?

TerriBull Wed 21-Aug-24 10:37:44

I don't know, somehow I guess my card was cloned when buying petrol at Sainsbury's Garage, because when I go into the store to do a grocery shop, I use the Smart Shop scanner where I just put Nectar cars number in to that device, so the physical card isn't handed to anyone. The only place the actual card is used is at the petrol garage so beats me. I'm just wondering how often this happens with loyalty cards.

It hapened to me too a few years ago. They just disappeared from my account.
I was raging!

I have been unable to access my Nectar points for years or use my Sainsbury's online account. Sometime during lockdown, after I applied for priority delivery slots, they froze the two accounts and I was locked out.

I have tried numerous times since to sort this out but Sainsbury's have been totally unhelpful and obstructive.
I even wrote a letter and mailed it to head office, I received a totally unhelpful generic reply and nothing was done to remedy the situation.

Gosh coming to something, stealing another persons super market points 😩

TerriBull Wed 21-Aug-24 11:13:33

I too was raging Marydoll, checked into my app and I was "WHAAAAT" pretty much all the points just gone shock There wasn't really anything in their FAQ that dealt with the problem of the problem of points being used fraudulently, just the "lost or stolen card" which wasn't the issue. The support team were super helpful, I'm guessing that Nectar have outsourced all of that to India, because the three guys in differing departments all had that intonation which can be difficult to understand, not a criticism, just a fact. I hate having to ask them to repeat themselves, they're probably used to it. The last one who I spoke to was patience personified, I wouldn't want to be dealing with me, I'm a bit dense with anything technical, but we got there.

That sounds really off Indigo, maybe ring the Nectar helpline.

I saved money for Christmas on my Iceland Bonus Card. When I came to spend it, it was gone. It was quite a performance to get it back.

Desdemona Wed 21-Aug-24 11:19:16

Yes, I had my Nectar points stolen a few years ago just before Christmas (I had been saving them specifically for Christmas.)

They had been spent in an Argos store in Slough (many miles from where I live.) I reported it online and a few weeks later I had a new card with the points reinstated and a small amount of extra Nectar points for the trouble caused.

I googled it at the time and theft from Nectar cards is rife, unfortunately. For a while after I would spend my points each time I earned the £2.50 minimum to cash them in, but Sainsbury's do occasional offers to "double up" points so I like to keep them for that.

There have been several newspaper articles about this recently and it was on You &Yours, Radio 4, in January. Here is a link to the programme www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001vs91

It seems to be a widespread problem.

NotSpaghetti Wed 21-Aug-24 11:24:21

I had something similar happen too Indigo - I admit I found Sainsbury's very hard to deal with and also wrote to head office to resolve the issue. It isn't resolved. I don't use Sainsbury's much now though so gave up.

I set up a second waitrose account for my mother-in-law (in my husband's name) to use for my mother-in-law post TIA when he was shopping for her.

After trying to put it in her name they still send the emails to me, the texts to my husband and call us all by my mother-in-law's name. The primary address is here. I've tried to correct it by phone and in stages online - but gave up and started a new one for her on her own laptop which she can do herself.

My own waitrose account now addresses me as her though! ... I gave up on that and if I put in an order I know it's mine even though it now addresses me as her!

There are probably loads of redundant accounts!
...and lots of confusion!

Yes! I was beginning to think that I was the only one. Apparently someone used my nectar points at a shopping centre near london! I was gobsmacked when I went into Sainsbury’s and discovered that I had no points. After a long phone call they cancelled my card. A bit useless after the blooming points were gone but they did it anyway. The send me a new one and there was nothing on it. Back on the phone and they brought my balance back to where it was. Just short of £50 is not to be sniffed at. So I am going to get some clothes etc and use them up. Not saving them again after this performance.

tickingbird Wed 21-Aug-24 12:06:20

Yes I had my Nectar points stolen and didn’t get them reinstated so you were lucky.

TerriBull Wed 21-Aug-24 12:39:22

If I hadn't got them reinstated, well that would be the end of me and Nectar Although I imagine they wouldn't give a stuff!

A while back the direct road to my Sainsbury's was closed due to gas repairs for a couple of months. I had to go the long way round to town, as Tescos was nearer I shopped there for a while and decided to apply for one of their cards which has to be done on line. What a mission! At some stage I'd previously had one of their cards, so my email kept throwing me out with 'already has an account' but there didn't seem to be any way of updating new address and mobile number. For heaven's sake does no one move or chsnge their phonehmm Sometimes life's just too short for such time wasting.

Thanks for that link Monica.

How horrible Kate to go and do a Christmas shop and find someone's used what you've saved. I imagine most points are used then, I do.

Kate1949 Wed 21-Aug-24 13:10:57

Yes Terri it was a shock. The card is always in my purse and I only ever use our local Iceland. I've no idea how they got it but apparently it happened to a few people.

dragonfly46 Wed 21-Aug-24 13:23:03

Just checked mine and saw I have £149 that I didn't know I had!

Spend it quick!

sharon103 Wed 21-Aug-24 13:44:54

I few years ago I used to have my grocery shop every week with Morrisons and used to save my points to spend at Christmas. I used to shop online.
Came a particular Christmas, went to spend the points money, almost £80 and they were gone!
Contacted Morrisons. I was fuming. They weren't in the least bit bothered although somehow I found out myself that they were spent somewhere up north and I told them that. I live in East midlands.
No refund or any kind gesture so I changed over to shopping with Tesco.
I just hope my points money is still there for Christmas this year.

V3ra Wed 21-Aug-24 14:54:11

I've never had a problem with Tesco, and there are good deals to have with the Clubcard prices on a range of items in your day-to-day shopping.
You also get priority for booking delivery slots at Christmas and Easter.

I mainly use my points for vouchers towards our Senior Railcards: £15 worth of vouchers doubles up and gives me the £30 for a one year card.

Similarly I treated my daughter and her family to a half price entrance fee for the Sea Life Centre at Cromer when they were holidaying in the area last summer.

M0nica Wed 21-Aug-24 16:31:42

Ido nto have a nectar card, but do have a 'My Waitrose card. I also have a John Lewis credit card. the credit card gives me points for everything I buy and double points when I shop in Waitrose or John Lewis and about ecery quarter sends me a voucher.

By th ened of the year I usually have enough vouchers to pay for most of my Christmas week food bill.

TerriBull Wed 21-Aug-24 16:46:19

I have the Waitrose App on my phone linked to my Waitrose card which offers two discounts a week, slight reduction on items frequently bought but I also have a free nominated newspaper irrespective of how much I spend Quite a saving on Sunday ST is now £4.50,

PinkSweetPea Wed 21-Aug-24 17:49:50

I had my Nectar points stolen too, it was a few years ago and they were spent in a Argos shop in London apparently, I am no where near London and my card is always in my purse. I did get them back and I seem to remember they gave me some extra points. I don't build up the points now and spend them regularly.

Grandmachrisy47 Thu 22-Aug-24 11:47:53

I had mine stolen last weekend. £40 used for petrol in Wiltshire. I live in Co Durham. The physical card never leaves the house, I use the one on my phone. After three hours going round in circles with Nectar my old card was cancelled and a new one issued. They gave me the number so I could re link my Sainsburys grocery app. They wouldn’t promise to reinstate the £40 but I might get it back within 30 days. None yet, but I’m getting my points on my grocery delivery. It’s fortunate that I’d already spent the £150 I had previously.

Doodledog Thu 22-Aug-24 11:59:12

Sorry if this is stating the obvious, but does everyone know that you can spend (and gain) Nectar points on eBay, but only until the end of August? I collect them, and have often used them on eBay as you can get so much on there, and the discount from points is useful. I don't know why they are stopping the collaboration, but if anyone's got their eye on something, get in before the end of the month.

I lost £62.50 worth last Saturday. They showed on my nectar account as redemeed. I have my card. Who ever it was spent £3 and then later redeemed the points. I live in SE London and the card was used in Dunstable. I spent last Sunday morning messaging Nectar to sort it out, they agreed it was suspicious activity, currently waiting for a new card to arrive with my points in. From now on I won’t be saving the points on card I will be spending them
as soon as they are earnt.
