Kitchen appliance insurance

Another hopeful scammer. A phone call from a young woman, who knew my name and address, and said she was phoning from "home care appliance insurance", (but didn't mention which company.) As I do have Homecare insurance for my kitchen appliances, I continued to listen. She said she had information that I hadn't made any claims in the past year (true) so I was being offered a discount on my next year, and told me the old and the new price. There was about a 20% discount. she then passed me over to "her line manager" to finalise. He wanted me to "confirm" the expiry date of my credit card so that he could complete the change. This rang warning bells to me, as the price has been legitimately changed on the Direct Debit several times in the last few years without me having to do a thing, so I said I would have to check on something first and rang off.

I then put the number into a phone number checker and discovered that others had had the same call - including some who didn't have any kitchen appliance insurance to get a no-claim bonus on.

Waste of money even when legit.

Surely that is Elegran's choice?

Yes it is Elegran’s choice, but I agree with RRH - the chances of any electric appliance failing is miniscule. And even if it does, the cost of a new one is probably less than the total annual premiums.
The appliances I now have, are from the time I moved here in 2009., except the dishwasher, which I have just replaced.

I agree appliance insurance is a waste of money, the only appliance replaced in my kitchen was five years old and the cost of replacement was less than five years insurance.

Whether the insurance itself is a waste of money is irrelevant to the scam warning. Paying twice over would be twice the waste - and would give the scammer access to my bank account to set up a new Direct Debit and take whatever they fancied.

I am another that does not have kitchen appliance insurance. It is like health insurance, except in exceptional circumstances, you end up paying out fsar more than you ever get back. You are better off saving the money in a home emergency account and rawing it out for a new appliance when the appliance breaksdown.
