Scams and fraud

I’ve done a silly thing

I was looking for a long cardigan to wear at Christmas. I looked at all the usual suspects but couldn’t find anything I liked. However after searching on Google the ideal item came up from a company called MOVA London. I was so pleased and ordered it immediately- what was I thinking!! It is just not like me to do something like that without checking for reviews. Of course, you’ve guessed it, it’s coming from China, despite the ‘London’ in the name and I’ve now been waiting since 1st December. The tracking says it’s on the way but this never changes. Of course, having now looked at the reviews for this company they are terrible with not one above one star. Complaints are delay in deliveries, or non deliveries and the few who did receive their items say they are absolute rubbish, only fit for the bin.
I will try a chargeback from my bank but if that doesn’t work I might have to put it down to experience.
Be warned GNetters, don’t touch them with a barge pole.

Oh sorry you've been caught like that, it happens to the best of us. Especially at this time of year when we all have so much on our minds. I've had stuff come from USA that gave no indication until after my order was confirmed. I think these goods from China are quite variable so you may get lucky, but if not you'll have to mark it down to experience.

Never order from anywhere you haven’t heard of and know at least by reputation.

Sadgrandma Tue 16-Dec-25 17:39:02

Oreo, Believe me I know that now and actually did know before but I must have had a brain fart!

😂
It happens!

Was it very cheap? This is how people are reeled in.

Sadgrandma Wed 17-Dec-25 12:12:37

Boz
No not really, it was about the same as I would have paid in somewhere like M&S.
I have now had an email from Yodel to say they are delivering it on the 19th! However, Evri says they are awaiting it (are they now the same company)? And UPS says it’s arrived at the airport. The company tracking site doesn’t recognise the order number!!!! Anyway will wait and see if I get it on 19th and what it turns out to be like if I do 😳

So sorry this has happened and it's a timely warning for all of us.
Hopefully it will arrive on the 19th and maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised by the quality - but maybe not!
Do keep us updated after you receive it.

And do watch out for those ads saying a long term family business is closing down and they are selling their lovely looking leather handbags, sweaters, dresses etc at discoumted prices.

A scam. I havent been reeled in by them. but have read of people who have and either they receive nothing or some complete trash.
We must keep our wits about us in this time of good cheer.

On another site that I'm on, there have been several people that have ordered things from websites with London in the name. Apparently that can be the warning sign that they are scam companies! I do hope you get your order eventually and let us know what it's like.

I like to support small independent companies when possible. This sometimes means taking a chance on a start up business that will never grow its customer base if nobody uses it because it's new. I do look to make sure it's UK based at least.

It's very difficult with the London bit, because I've been ordering judging by whether the firm has a genuine distribution centre in the UK.
You can dig into them a bit and find out. ...it's hopeless when they send from China unless it's a good fit and they arrive on time. Trouble is, some of them do deliver on time but I've mainly given up.

i now go to trust pilot before i order from any company. i have bought items from places that will not take it back or will only give a partial refund, best to check first now.

Wyllow3 Wed 17-Dec-25 14:15:10

Great idea. I've just checked you can do that for Amazon companies, although its a bit long winded.

Sadgrandma Thu 18-Dec-25 16:35:20

It actually arrived today and, as I suspected, it is nothing like the picture. I think it’s more like a dressing gown than a long cardigan and cheap looking! Ah well I’ve learned my lesson.

Sadgrandma Wed 24-Dec-25 11:20:09

I complained to the company that the garment is nothing like the one advertised and they have said I can either send it back (to China) at my own expense, and I would be reimbursed once it is received in good condition, or I can accept a 10% refund. Ha! I wrote back to say no chance that I would not be forking out to send it back and that 10% is an insult. They have now offered 20%. I said no thank you I wouldn’t accept anything less than 50% and that I have reported them to the International Consumer Council which I have. I doubt I will hear from them again!
Anyone want a new dressing gown!”?

Thanks for the update. So frustrating for you.
However I'm sure the charity shop will benefit from this experience.

I'm glad you've highlighted this so we can all be aware when ordering online.

Have a merry Christmas, try and forget about all this and put it out of your mind.

HelterSkelter1 Wed 24-Dec-25 13:20:41

That's bad luck OP. Thank you for giving us a warning.

Scams are nothing new. Years ago dodgy market traders would sell boxed items which were nothing like what they were demonstrating. It's so easy to be fooled.
