Badger culling failed

Just had an email from PETA to say the badger cull is going ahead.

Petition to change the government's mind.

The deadline is just over a month away. I hope that's not a pun.

How much it costs to cull badgers compared with the cost of vaccination.

I can see why it took a freedom of information request - not the sort of information the government would want to give to the general public.

So true whitewave, the farmers decided the Badgers had to die ,

whitewave Wed 31-Aug-16 21:32:50

The point is with this is that it is willful destruction of a species with no scientific evidence to back it up. It is merely a sop to the farming lobby who worry about their profit.

Having a licence to shoot and kill these animals does not mean they are ace shots or don't get a thrill from it.

Jane10 Wed 31-Aug-16 21:10:04

I just cannot understand the mindset of people who enjoy shooting animals. sad

I agree that a fully grown one is quite large and must be heavy - I've seen one in our garden at night looking for the sultanas we used to leave out for the birds.

I've never seen one by the side of the road, although there is plenty of other roadkill, unfortunately. I don't live in an area where badger culling is (legally) going on - not sure whether that makes a difference.

Yrears ago I accidentally hit a badger. I stopped and went to check if it was ok. It had managed to go In to the forest.
My car had a huge dent and expensive repair bill
If all the dead badgers on side of the road are from road kill then there would be a lot of badly dented cars around.

If people are found to be breaking the law by killing badgers without a licence then they deserve to be prosecuted so there isn't really a connection with legal culling.

Anniebach Wed 31-Aug-16 20:51:21

No idea Ana, too difficult to think as a person enjoying this new blood sport thinks

Ana Wed 31-Aug-16 20:41:45

But why do they leave them by the side of the road? What's the purpose of that if it's going to be obvious they weren't killed by traffic? confused

Anniebach Wed 31-Aug-16 20:34:10

What also happens is not all badgers are killed by a single gun shot, msny crawl away injured and there are the poor creatures which are clubbed to death . Many who volenteer to carry out culling enjoy the killing

Derbyshire has been another hotspot, but it has been happening all over the country.

granjura Wed 31-Aug-16 20:25:38

Badger groups all over the country have been examining the corpses of badger by roadside all over the country due to such reports made, Of course some are the result of a collision- but a significant proportion have shown signs of bullet wounds over last few years- and it is now a well-known fact that it happens.

Ana Wed 31-Aug-16 20:09:59

Well, it wouldn't look like road kill then - why do you think the badgers you see dead at the side of the road have been put there on purpose, cherrytree?

merlotgran Wed 31-Aug-16 20:08:35

Did you check?

Anniebach Wed 31-Aug-16 20:05:28

Road kill doesn't cause bullet wounds

Anniebach Wed 31-Aug-16 20:03:26

It is just another legal blood sport. TB csn be contracted cow to cow, other wild life too can have TB . No need for this culling

merlotgran Wed 31-Aug-16 20:01:02

How do you know they're not road kill?

Cherrytree59 Wed 31-Aug-16 19:49:38

We have badgers left on the side of the road to look like road kill.
There is an option to vaccinate.

granjura Wed 31-Aug-16 14:42:38

Indeed sad

whitewave Wed 31-Aug-16 14:30:58

The cull carried out last summer has failed to stop the TB problem in cattle in the areas in which the culling took place.

What to do!! I know lets spend millions more, ignore the scientific evidence and cull thousands more badgers- a protected species. How dim can you be?
