This little orange and black insect was sitting on my shoe when I came in from the garden just now. I have no idea what it is ... can you help? The pound coin is there as a scale.

It looks to me like a shield bug grannynise.

Thanks but I don't think so. It's rather fluffy looking and not the right shape. Maybe it's a baby?

Ladybird baby don't kill it shock it's a good friend to the gardener

Aren't shield bugs usually green, and quite a different shape? I've no idea what this little thing is...

Greyduster Sat 10-Jun-17 19:58:23

Definitely a baby ladybird.

Ana Sat 10-Jun-17 19:59:57

It is indeed - don't think I've ever seen one before!

Thabk you! I've put it carefully back in the garden. I thought it was a baby something but didn't know what. Hope it's eating all the greenfly now!

I didn't know that Mrs. Ladybird's children looked so different to her.

Just google "ladybird larvae" and you will see your little friend. Shield bugs are a pale green sturdy small flying beetle with a tough shell.

Yes agree - Ladybird.

Theoddbird Sun 11-Jun-17 09:19:43

Definitely a ladybird larva smile

MinniesMum Sun 11-Jun-17 09:39:03

Looks like a ladybird larva to me. If you see any more gently coax it on to a piece of paper and, if you have any greenfly or blackfly in the garden, decant it onto the plant near the bugs! Lucky you.

I can identify both vine weevil larvae and those literally shitty lily beetle larvae and I wish I could see the little blighters much less often.
