Came across this post just now. I had no idea. Not that I'd harm them anyway. I've always thought they were quite cute. Many years ago I remember have woodlouse races!!

Here's another fact I didn't know yesterday: Male seahorses are the ones who get pregnant and carry the babies.

I still don't like them indoors!!

Re seahorses, I believe the eggs are fertilised inside the females who produce the eggs ('normal' so far for sexual reproduction), and then the fertilised eggs are transferred to the male who gestates them.

This is not quite the same as simply saying the male seahorses get pregnant but it is certainly a very interesting adaptation.

Fascinating! Thanks for that.

I think they're adorable!

Have you seen the YouTube videos of their birthing's? Gorgeous and fascinating!

I saw one where dad was giving birth and one of the newborns immediately clung to his nose and stayed there while he was popping hundreds of others!

We had rather a lot of them getting into a small downstairs study a few years ago; how they got in was a mystery as that room does not have a door to outside and it was a relatively new build house at that time. There were no gaps or air bricks either, no plumbing.

I'm afraid I didn't treat them very kindly.
We haven't had a problem since.

I mean woodlice, not lovely seahorses. 😁

As a birthday gift recently from my family I had a visit from Creepy Critters. 5 family members joined in too. I had previously been given a choice of 5 creatures to learn about and handle if appropriate.
I chose a millipede, a chinchilla, a gecko, a polecat and a spider.
The man who brought them was excellent - explained their origins, their habits and all sorts of interesting information. They were certainly in good form. We were allowed to handle an animal in turn and discuss how it felt etc - except for the pole cat which he held as it liked to bite but with our permission allowed it to run around the sitting room and that was no problem at all.
I was scared of the rather large hairy spider but determined to see what it was like. He passed it to me gently and stayed with me and it was such a gentle and dainty spider - it was a mixture of cream, black and white hairs, rather pretty really. I hardly felt it wandering on my hands. It was wonderful and I was so pleased to have held it. It made my day! Would I do it again? Yes if the same guy was there!
This fellow does parties, visits schools, has small groups like ours in the home and was really knowledgeable. If you have anyone like him in your area I recommend going along to a session or have a visit.

DGD went to a party a few years ago where someone brought creepy critters Athrawes.

She was only very young then but happily let a very large spider sit on her hand.
I think her sister would have fled in panic!
