The other day, but still on the BBC website if you search ‘hoopoe’.
Apparently it stayed for 3 days, stuffing itself with leatherjackets out of the lawn! Evidently very hungry.

We saw one a couple of years ago on the grass outside a BiL’s place not far from Dijon, but v rare there, too.

Bumping this in case it got lost amongst all the spam threads.

That's exciting! Presumably it was stopping off on its migration journey for a meal and a rest.

My daughter had a pair in her garden in Shropshire/Cheshire about 4 years ago.
Lovely birds.

They’re welcome to eat the leatherjackets in my lawn! I’ve seen a hoopoe in Eygpt. I believe they’re considered unclean there because they rootle for insects in piles of dung.

We saw them when we lived in SW Françe all the time, so exotic looking, unusual to see one here.

Just in case anyone spots an unusual bird on their lawn:

Just the usual suspects here.

How lovely. They are beautiful birds.

That is so beautiful.

We do get woodpeckers on the lawn but I would love to see a hoopoe.

Used to see one very occasionally when we lived in Cyprus, but that was over 50 years ago now!

We see them occasionally here in rural France, beautiful birds.

Beautiful bird! I’ll bet that had the twitchers leaping for their cameras!

I've never seen one here but did have an amazing sighting of one in France, digging in a field for ages.

I used to see them in Southern Italy, notably down in the Cilento.

I’d be thrilled to see one in my garden. How exciting.
