They’re welcome to eat the leatherjackets in my lawn! I’ve seen a hoopoe in Eygpt. I believe they’re considered unclean there because they rootle for insects in piles of dung.
The other day, but still on the BBC website if you search ‘hoopoe’. Apparently it stayed for 3 days, stuffing itself with leatherjackets out of the lawn! Evidently very hungry.
We saw one a couple of years ago on the grass outside a BiL’s place not far from Dijon, but v rare there, too.
