I knew someone (probably you, absent) would comment on that ! I did think of just putting hoi polloi with no English article, but it 'sounded' wrong in my head, so I suppose the my answer to your question is yes. Like it or lump it.

Oh, I agree . I only said it was 'acceptable' for use by the hoi polloi . After all, it's what people say, right or wrong. It will become right through ignorant usage like many another incorrect thing in our language.
I'm never argumentative, as you all know , so this is just for mischief. According to this site, it's perfectly acceptable for common or garden non-sailors to call the union flag the union jack.
