Oh POGS grin
Thank you.

POGS Mon 10-Sept-12 19:49:32

Who on earth is RD?

Nonu Mon 10-Sept-12 17:30:32

No Telly ? grin

Bags Mon 10-Sept-12 16:58:31

He may be deceived in thinking so, but RD was saying quite recently how welcomed he is when he goes into "the Bible Belt" of America. He says the halls are packed and people are enthusiastic about what he has to say, as if they were relieved to be free for a while from the harassment they feel from the full on religion all around them. He thinks that maybe the US isn't quite so concentratedly religious as some people would have us believe.

I have no opinion on this. I'm just repeating something I've heard, possibly on his forum, but I can't remember. Will check and reference if anyone wants me to.

lily, I don't watch PMQ for two reasons. One is that I do know what they're like – often pretty awful. The other is that we don't have a telly. But I think there's a place for politicians provoking each other deliberately, don't you? Even if there isn't, they'll still do it so my attitude is Shrug! Nature of the beast. smile

Lilygran Mon 10-Sept-12 16:48:07

If you really think politicians don't deliberately try to offend, watch PMQs. Academic debate takes no prisoners. To go into the Bible Belt to engage in winding up people who are neither politicians nor academics seems to me like seeking an easy victory. You can modify your attack to take account of your opponent's idiosyncracies without being patronising. I think people are getting annoyed about this particular discussion so I shall desist until the next thing gets me going. sunshine

Bags Mon 10-Sept-12 12:20:10

Surely you have to assume people are equals when you are arguing with them? And as for views being offensive... hmmm. What about freedom of speech? I don't like what extremist politicians of either the 'left' or the 'right' may say but I still think they have a right to say it. They are not saying what they say in order to be offensive. They are saying what they think. If I choose to be offended rather than just trying to argue with them, that's my problem, not theirs.

Bags Mon 10-Sept-12 12:14:25

So are you suggesting RD should talk down to people who "maybe aren't his equals either in terms of public profile or even, intellectual capacity?" That really would be patronising. Who is he to judge? How would he know? He can't know who is listening to the radio. Radios can be switched off, even, if the listener doesn't like what she is hearing.

If I've misinterpreted what you're saying, sorry, and please can you explain further. At the moment I'm at a loss if that's not what you mean.

Lilygran Mon 10-Sept-12 12:07:52

Thank you, Geraldine, yes, I agree. We should also consider that while 'you are stupid' is unarguably offensive, maybe also 'your wife is stupid' or even 'Jews/Christians/ Muslims/Hindus/Buddhists/Zoroastrians are stupid' may also be taken as knowingly offensive.

And, Bags, yes, robust political debate allows for comments you know will be offensive to the opposition, invites it, even. But it has to be between equals. Youknowwho has a go at people who maybe aren't his equals either in terms of public profile or even, intellectual capacity. And a lively discussion at High Table isn't the same as him v whoever happens to be within earshot of the radio.

Anagram Mon 10-Sept-12 11:48:06

Well, I'm not going to try it to find out....hmm

GeraldineGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 10-Sept-12 11:36:59

The Secret Service doesn't comment on procedures wink

JO4 Mon 10-Sept-12 10:47:33

(that was to Geraldine when)

JO4 Mon 10-Sept-12 10:47:10

he he he !!!

Anagram Mon 10-Sept-12 10:46:27

Geraldine, you couldn't possibly know that Member 1. using their own home computer, and Member 1. calling herself Member 2. using (for example) her friend's computer a few miles away with a different internet provider were one and the same person! The person would obviously give different details when applying.

GeraldineGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 10-Sept-12 10:41:42

If I told you I would have to kill you smile

JO4 Mon 10-Sept-12 10:40:08

This is fun innit?

But I've got jobs to do. sad

Reagrding disappearing threads due to technicalities, chocolate will not cut it!

JO4 Mon 10-Sept-12 10:38:01

Yes. 'course it was when. hmm

Anagram Mon 10-Sept-12 10:36:48

But surely you could use two computers with different internet providers? (theoretically, of course!).

MiceElf Mon 10-Sept-12 10:36:46

Don't know what happened there. It should read

It's easy to identify sock puppets.

whenim64 Mon 10-Sept-12 10:35:06

Was that a response to Geraldine, Jingle? smile

MiceElf Mon 10-Sept-12 10:34:41

The Internet provider of every member will be known to Admin. it is easyseesaw entity sock puppets.

JO4 Mon 10-Sept-12 10:31:44

sunshine

JO4 Mon 10-Sept-12 10:31:27

Oh right!!!! shock

So, you knew all along that I'm not Johanna. That's not what you said at the time!!! shock

I am going back a bit now. grin

whenim64 Mon 10-Sept-12 10:30:15

I agree, too! There are lots of threads where I share the views of some posters, but don't agree with them on other threads. It's never personal for me, unless someone clearly says it is. smile

Bags Mon 10-Sept-12 10:25:32

I like that, Geraldine – "leave it at the thread door" smile

GeraldineGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 10-Sept-12 10:19:49

Lilygran, agreed that most of the time it's pretty easy to tell what constitutes a personal attack. It's not solely determined by whether someone takes offence; it's an attack which is specifically directed at another person, rather than at their ideas. The person doesn't have to be named.

"You're stupid" is a personal attack.
"Your argument is stupid" is not.

Gransnet is and should be a forum for robust discussion. It's also a forum for support and kindness. The two things are not incompatible.

Incidentally, a couple of tips from Mumsnet:

If you fall out/disagree with someone on one thread, you should leave it at the thread door. It's possible to be at odds on one thread and best friends on another.

People respect you more when you apologise or change your mind and say so on the thread.

Finally....(sorry, long post) jingl we do have ways of knowing if two posters are the same person (secret squirrel wink)
