I have realised that they, sadly, are going to be there.
BUT is it necessary to have the ones that jig about in the corner of your eye and are so distracting????
What do others think?

It is now an interactive ad, but i m not interacting.

So you haven't got the Mumsnet Academy advert in that space? confused

Elegran Sat 02-Feb-13 17:17:42

Hate to argue, JO , but yes you do get cookies from Gransnet. A lot of the stuff on the site would not work without them. They are corralled in the cookie file though. Pop-up windows are another thing entirely and can be blocked without interfering with the page (well mostly - sometimes websites put up a useful message in a pop-up window, and if it is blocked you can't see it)

I was invaded by a web site called Alexa . It had things dancing about. Drove me Scatty and I had to get my local friendly geek in to sort it out

My Mumsnet Academy appears across the top.
Still haven't worked out how to stop the ads.

I've got a Mumsnet Academy across the top, and also a square one directly under Search Forums. I can't understand how other adverts are getting onto your Gransnet page! confused

Elegran - whjat I mean is, you don't get adverts coming up on here that have been obtained through cookies. IYSWIM. Like you do sometimes on the web when you are looking at other things.

Alie, I suppose you couldn't possibly describe these ads you are getting? confused

Right now there's a Sega one flashing and on TOP of the 'Latest from Gransnet' is another Mumsnet Academy one.

AlieOxon Sun 03-Feb-13 10:53:16

Now the upper one is a casino ad.

Allie Do you have pop-up windows blocked on your browser? Because that should stop them.

Also you can delete all the cookies which have so far been delivered, AND you can choose whether to just accept cookies, accept them IF you are asked, or ban them completely except for exceptions.

You have to actively list exceptions, and you may well find a lot of sites have bits that don't work without them.

Firefox and Internet Explorer have different ways of doing these things, but it should be possible with al browsers.

Elegran Sun 03-Feb-13 11:32:04

JO I do SWYM

Elegran Sun 03-Feb-13 11:36:42

And, Allie the pop-up windows should have an X or a "close" somewhere to pop them down again. That is short-term - they will pop up again unless you ban them completely, and get rid of any cookies that remind the site about them every time as you go online.

I have had some with no way to close them though. How they can believe that encourages you to think "What a nice site, I must go there!" I reallly can't understand.

No way should there be a casino ad on Gransnet!!! shock

Son has just said it's because you are using IE9 and you should change to Firefox.

AlieOxon Sun 03-Feb-13 18:29:15

Hi again. This time I'm on Firefox. and I found the settings easily and haven't got the ads. Except a Mumsnet one which moves.

AND no trouble with the cursor just now.

Only it took me six times to get logged in.
I thought it had lost the password, but the sixth time it worked.

Maybe son is right, j07.
