Looks like another griping session, bags. Time to lighten up, peeps! there are lots of fun, enjoyable things to do than worrying away about things that don't exist. Peace!

I object to the c* word as being pejorative to women . As I do to all gender specific swearing having once seen a list of derogative description s of women counterbalanced by a much shorter one for men. We are as women short changing ourselves by using them .Sorry if I am being worthy here but I was always told that too many swear words meant a limited unoriginal mind.

I would be annoyed if swearing were to be banned and I get irritated when people object to acronyms as IMO, they are part and parcel of the world of forums. I spend more time on Mumsnet these days, because tbh I find Gransnet has got a bit boring and I like a change from the same old same old. I think the real problem is that there are not always enough posters on Gransnet, so many of us know and are annoyed (or not) by the (sometimes) predictable views of others and by the same old stories. I don't want to be the boring woman who bangs on about France / schools / the ConDem government, so I don't post very often now.
I find this often is the pattern with forums, especially over the holidays. I am not directing this at anyone in particular, so please don't take offence!

There seems to be a lot of things changing and not always for the better.

I like the variety on here and think that swearing is now part and parcel of life whether we like it or not.
I tend not to get involved in political stuff (except for Syria!!!) or other more intense subjects, but I am happy to read them and find out what others think. I am a bit of a chicken in discussions, (my family will testify to that as they are all ardent discussers), hence I rarely add my thoughts.
I love Gransnet and log on most days. I would not like to see it sanitised.
Oh and I enjoy JO8's direct approach, she often writes what I think, as do others.
If someone doesn't like the way a thread it going, the best thing is not to read it.
We are after all, supposedly all grown up now and have seen a lot of the life and have had varied experiences between us all.

It's not the ex teachers, social workers, lecturers or the Guardian readers who put me off - it's the people who are so decided and think they are the only people who are entitled to an opinion who put me off. They are the ones who make me think I'm not worthy.

Bluebell, this was a very happy forum until a few months ago and I can't remember people being banned until fairly recently, unless they were trolls.

Petallus are peace and healthy debate mutually exclusive? Not for me they aren't. I prefer to stay friendly. We've all got more in common than we are different.

Why does it actually matter about who reports what? As I said above, if we don't like the way the forum is run, we can always leave. I've been reported and deleted and sometimes I thought it was fair and sometimes not but I don't whinge about it.

That's true when but sometimes a bit of temporary conflict adds life to a discussion.

The good thing about GN is that when we do fall out we usually manage to get over it.

You are obviously a very confident person bluebell, not everyone is and not everyone wants to be made to feel 'unworthy' because they are not so forceful.

I am not offended if people swear - I don't myself but if I tried to stop other people that is censorship which I think is worse than swearing. GN is made up of people from different walks of life and different backgrounds and is the better for it. How boring if we all thought the same and used the same language.

Leaving by choice is one thing, being made, because your views do not 'gel' with others, to do so is completely different.

bluebell you seem to be a very angry woman. Why bother with GN? Because I find there are some illuminating, compassionate people posting on a variety of subjects who speak from the depths of their own experience. I am impressed by the support, freely given to those who need it and I feel I can learn much from them. I also learn a lot from experts in gardening and cooking, neither of which is my forte.

I also find things which make me laugh, j08 in particular, is priceless and so often cuts to the quick of the pomposity with a brilliant comment.

Personally I don't take to being preached to or told what I should think, I doubt many people our age do. Nor do I believe shouting loudly about the ills of the world makes me a better person. We have all achieved much in our life and personally, I find tolerance of others is quite important. That's why this new culture of reporting and banning is so unpleasant.

sel, What new culture of reporting and banning? We have always been advised by HQ to report certain kinds of posts. I daresay the same applies on MN. As for banning, that appears to me to be still, as it always was, extremely rare.

Sorry, should have made that remark clearer....either by being banned, or the constant sniping by other members makes you decide that enough is enough.

Sel in your last post you have expressed the reasons we are all here. There's room for serious and frivolous discussions and no need for checking out whether posters are businesswomen, state pensioners, public sector workers, tinkers, tailors or whatever.
