With a webchat on Internet Security I feel now might be the time to tackle the issue of "undesirables". By this I mean someone like an OP recently who turns out to be a former member barred for his/her conduct in the past. A thread started by this person has been deleted but his/her change of persona went unheeded for some days until he/she went "too far". There have been other instances of a former member "reappearing" and then dropping out of sight sharpish when challenged. We all know a change of name following deregistration and re- registration is allowed and usually it is because a member is afraid their anonymity has been compromised and not for any subversive or malign purpose.
The answer from GNHQ is to report suspicious posts to them and leave them to do the policing but given that there are those who slip through the net and stir up dissension when challenged, is this enough? We need to remember not to give away too much personal information especially any which might identify us but at the same time the essence of GN is to be able to pour your heart out and seek advice/sympathy/comfort. I hate the thought that there are predatory posters checking out ex-wives of millionaires, people's financial background or housing or care home issues. Is there a way forward? confused

I was PM'd once to ask for sexual favours, but think it was a student prank, as there were a few cheeky threads started around the same time. I just reported it and smiled. It is the only approach I am likely to get!

As a new member [new-ish anyway] while enjoying this site, we have to remember that the internet is not a private club, it's like sending a postcard, virtually anyone can read it.So if there is anything really personal that you wouldn't want people to know about generally, don't post it on here.Don't tell friends your user name, and log out each time if you share a computer. It's pretty horrible if anyone pm's you for anything other than friendly helpful means, though I have been lucky so far.smile

Stansgran, I think we should have a thread that is called something like 'Just in case you missed it, read the thread entitled such and such' but it would probably be against the rules.

Alternatively, we could ask if thread titles could be coloured red [which could be switched off and on, obviously!] as an alert for those of us who miss things!

I really don't think anyone would confess to not having the permission of people concerned, the people concerned may not realise the importance of confidentuality or that their business was the topic of conversation's on open forums we all know the forum's are open but there is certain etiquite to be followed, someone sitting at home using a forum for company & friendship/advice and maybe being of a nervous disposition could possibly be un-nerved receiving unwelcome messages I don't have this problem but there could be a few who are and maybe not aware of how to block unwelcome messages.

Story of my life.

Ana Wed 12-Feb-14 10:07:29

Of course.

As to preventing any former member from registering again, it must be virtually impossible if they use a different computer in a different location.

I've done the sudoku and the crossword and having a cup of tea and then I log on . Most days. And I haven't a CLUE what is going on.

I think Geraldine did what she genuinely thought was best. Perhaps she had "reasons". Who knows.

Ana Wed 12-Feb-14 09:37:26

He did say, when challenged on the question of confidentially, that he had the express permission of the people concerned. I know he made a couple of crass and tasteless remarks on other threads around the time of the anniversary of the London bombings but I wouldn't have thought they were 'banning' offences.

It's so long since I was propositioned by anyone I doubt I'd recognise it if it happened.

Lona Wed 12-Feb-14 09:18:33

Have I missed being propositioned by HF(or FH)? Double damn!! wink

Ana The advice given by that person whilst helping their "friends" with care funding appeals might have been accurate, but if they were working for any advocacy organisation they should have been sacked on the spot for breaking confidentiality.

I very much doubt if these "friends" knew what was happening to the information or had consented to these descriptions of their circumstances and general location being revealed on an open forum.

Those threads gave away a lot of details of peoples individual circumstances. IMO that is totally unacceptable.
I understand there were other issues as well.

Sorry.... like not lie!

Oldgreymare Tue 11-Feb-14 22:39:51

Totally, totally confused.
Lie you Kitty I always seem to miss the excitement!

bikergran Tue 11-Feb-14 22:17:52

Ana Tue 11-Feb-14 22:16:10

Or millionaire's ex-wife, even hmm

Ana Tue 11-Feb-14 22:14:58

What, another ex-millionaire's wife? shock

Galen Tue 11-Feb-14 22:13:57

Another one has been.

Ana Tue 11-Feb-14 22:11:18

Must have missed that post, Lona grin

But if you haven't been harassed by any posters, I don't really see why anyone needs to get their knickers in a twist in case they might. As has been said, this is an open site.

glassortwo Tue 11-Feb-14 22:10:12

kitty you and me both, think I have lost the plot.

Lona Tue 11-Feb-14 22:00:22

Trust me Galen You don't!

Galen Tue 11-Feb-14 21:50:13

We must have at least two then. We weren't thinking of you.
How many more of you have been married to millionaires?
I just wish I had.

Lona Tue 11-Feb-14 21:40:52

I've already mentioned that I'm an ex wife of a millionaire, but I've not been checked out by any predatory posters!
