We've been asked to provide a quote on whether gransnetters would choose to define themselves as "more than 'just' a grandmother" so your views very much appreciated asap !

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 11-Mar-15 09:51:20

confused Do you mean in relation to grandmother-ish duties, or as a person in general? (ie Is it another "older women become invisible thing?)

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 11-Mar-15 10:02:38

I am more than just a grandmother. I am also a purse. The only time he holds my hand is when we approach a toyshop.

Anya Wed 11-Mar-15 10:09:28

Yes, I'm more than 'just' a grandmother. I'm the matriarch of the family ..with all that entails.

kittylester Wed 11-Mar-15 10:19:08

Well, I'm a grandmother but so much more besides and I'm certainly not invisible!

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 11-Mar-15 10:21:28

I think it's about older women who want to be defined as more than just a grandmother

I assume it's like the not just a mum thing - ie I am a mother and it is absolutely central to my life (etc) but I am also a daughter, sister, friend, colleague, writer, editor, walker, chocolate addict

Well of course we are more than "just" grandmothers. We have a lifetime behind us of being people, with skills, opinions, emotions, relationships, memories, a whole history - and it isn't finished yet. We don't "just" stop existing and become "just" accessories to our (beloved) grandchildren!

Do men stop being men and become "just" husbands, or women become "just" wives?

Gagagran Wed 11-Mar-15 10:26:28

As well as being a grandmother, I am a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a holder of family stories and history, a provider of love, comfort and encouragement and in addition to all that, I am a complex individual woman with views, interests and hobbies. I have contributed a lot to the world and continue to do so.

Marmight Wed 11-Mar-15 10:31:14

I'm a Grandmother, but it's not the be all and end all of my life. There are other things out there for me and my family don't want me forever going on about their children, their lives and their way of doing things. It's great to be part of their lives and see them develop and become their own persons, but I don't believe in being too wrapped up and involved in them. Am I odd? No, I don 't think so.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 11-Mar-15 10:31:28

Perfect - just perfect.

And absolutely!

(I was just making the point on Twitter that women presenters get sacked for being 'old' and male presenters who punch people just get suspended confused

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 11-Mar-15 10:31:38

PS thank you!

loopylou Wed 11-Mar-15 10:48:00

I'm a grandmother (Nonna actually), wife, mum, daughter, auntie, great-auntie, sounding board, hugs giver and many other things! And I love it all smile, I wouldn't have it any other way and I have many other interests!
Yippee!!!

janerowena Wed 11-Mar-15 10:48:25

I only remember I am a grandmother when I come on here, most of the time. The truth is, I love my DCs dearly, I am 'fond of' my GCs. If I were a full-time grandmother maybe it would be different, I know that a friend of mine who seems to have most of the care of her GCs thinks of them as her own children - I think that's a bit dangerous - supposing they move?

I agree with Marmight - I don't want to be too involved. I have far too many other things to think about as it is.

gillybob Wed 11-Mar-15 10:53:50

I am a grandmother, a mother, a sister, a wife, a daughter, and a grandaughter.

.................. and guess what? I bl**dy well look after all of them !

it would be nice just to be "me" once in a while

annodomini Wed 11-Mar-15 11:03:36

I have been many things to many people and all I have been is still part of me. Yes, there are five people who call me 'granny', two who call me 'mum' My life experiences make me a more interesting mum and granny.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 11-Mar-15 11:51:39

Hasn't this stuff been done to death now? Care to let us know what boring rag/local radio station is asking Cari? smile

tanith Wed 11-Mar-15 11:57:28

I'm a grandmother when I'm spending time or in contact with my grandchildren the rest of the time I'm ME! and all that that entails and its a LOT!

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 11-Mar-15 12:08:37

It's the Telegraph

soontobe Wed 11-Mar-15 12:13:59

Are you talking about things like
"Grandmother, 67, beat off a man with just her handbag"?

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 11-Mar-15 12:34:47

Oh. Fancy! blush grin

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 11-Mar-15 12:35:33

(that was re "The Telegraph")

JessM Wed 11-Mar-15 12:38:45

If you got killed, or maybe didn't get killed in some spectacular way, would you like the headline to be"

"Grandmother, 63, survives meteorite strike" ?

loopylou Wed 11-Mar-15 12:41:36

It would be a bit late for fame or infamy-wouldn't be in any fit state to be able to appreciate it grin

janeainsworth Wed 11-Mar-15 12:52:48

Talk about stating the bl**ding obvious, in as insulting a way as possible.
(That was in response to the original request for a quote, not a remak addressed to another poster).
of course we're more than grandmothers, but to say 'just' a grandmother implies that it's not a very important thing to be.

JessM Wed 11-Mar-15 13:14:42

loopylou I had already changed my post from "got killed" Were you reading my mind there? smile
