Moderation and deleting posts

There are some situations where as well as deleting a post I think HQ should do more than just refer to its own guidelines but put in more of explanation. This is especially so as the site has such light touch real time moderation. The potentially libellous comment about ET was one issue but much worse was the post on the thread about the two girls being locked in their bedroom. The post that was deleted gave enough information for the family to be identified especially as we all know so much about the poster in RL including her name. This was an irresponsible post which potentially put the well being of two already vulnerable children at risk and I think HQ should have said something on the thread if only to remind us that GN is a completely open forum to which anyone has access. Most of us don't know each other in RL and even what we think we know each other on here , there will in some cases be a fabrication - we've had some dodgy posters in the past and they were the ones that were obviously dodgy. I know I'll get flamed for ths but really feel it's important - in RL much of my work is predicated on the need for confidentiality so it's in my DNA and I'm very aware of the dangers of gossipy comments made in inappropriate situations. Even if we don't have a professional duty to respect confidentiality, we all have a moral duty, especially in the case of vulnerable children. The gossipy, outrageous behaviour of the TA should have been reported IMO for example rather than broadcast on GN. We shouldn't be indulging in titilating gossip in situations like this - there's plenty of other opportunities

I think it perfectly reasonable for anyone to report a post they think is breaking the rules. If there is a post I think breaks the rules and I find objectionable I will report it. What I won't do is publicly castigate the poster or even announce that I have reported it, it is then up to the moderators to adjudicate. Posting that you are reporting, just causes bad feeling for no purpose.
I have occasional become incensed by a post and said so in the thread, but have never, so far, considered those instances to be report worthy as they don't break the rules, just my patience.

Well said Pompa.

Goodness, this seems to be getting a bit self-important and bombastic. It's Gransnet, not a well-funded newspaper or broadcaster with a team of lawyers who can check not only the content but also the wording of comments about a contentious issue. Libel law is such that the latter is just as important as the former. It is surely reasonable to delete a post that is potentially libellous even if it later transpires that it wasn't libellous.

POGS You seem to be unaware that sometimes a number of members will report the same post. You also seem to be unaware that posts are not automatically deleted just because someone has reported them. The idea that, say, half a dozen people, plus the Gransnet moderators, plus the author of the reported post should discuss the legal ramifications in detail when, almost certainly, none of them has any formal qualifications for doing so is laughable.

As for other posters wondering why a post has been deleted, does it really matter? In the case of very busy threads, many will have read the post before deletion and are likely to be aware of the reason. In other cases, regular posters will know that it's just Thingy having one of her regular hissy fits or Whatnot having one of her regular bad tempers. Equally it might be because Doo-dah has been having one of her frequent games of baiting Whatsername until Whatsername gets so cross she posts something abusive about Doo-dah which is then deleted. And so on…

rosesarered ^GrannyTwice says that she is somewhat nicer in RL than here in the forum,
Hmmm, why do we all doubt that?^

I really dislike other posters speaking on my behalf but if you have canvassed the thousands of other Gransnet members, please change your post to:

^GrannyTwice says that she is somewhat nicer in RL than here in the forum,
Hmmm, why do we all – with the exception of absent – doubt that?^

rosesarered Wed 22-Apr-15 21:09:15

Noted Absent, I shall leave you out of it.However GT has insulted quite a few people on Gnet , luckily for you, not you it seems.

rosesarered Wed 22-Apr-15 21:10:41

You also sound quite bombastic and self important yourself judging by your last two posts.

I could be wrong, but I think that POGS wants her name to be cleared.
Has that happened now?
So that we can all move on?

Gransnet did say that they are happy to look into explaining why posts have gone.

<peace>?

Soutra Wed 22-Apr-15 21:14:58

I think members are perfectly able to simply speak for themselves. If that is what POGS is indicating, she should say so and it is not up to anybody else to second guess what she does or does not want.

rosequartz Wed 22-Apr-15 21:16:37

Are you a hippy soon ?grin
Peace and love etc

soontobe Wed 22-Apr-15 21:17:46

Sometimes, posters get "wounded" Soutra. Or very upset. Or both. And appreciate some support, or help, or both.
And yes, she can say that I am wrong too!

pompa Wed 22-Apr-15 21:18:40

I can't see any point in starting an argument on a thread, let the moderators decide.

FYI, apart from reporting adverts etc, I have only ever reported one post, which was a direct personal attack - the post was removed. So don't get things out of proportion.

soontobe Wed 22-Apr-15 21:18:48

Peace and love rosequartz grin

soontobe Wed 22-Apr-15 21:20:37

If you look carefully at her posts Soutra, you can tell that that is what POGS is really after.

POGS Wed 22-Apr-15 21:27:16

You are correct soontobe.

I have soutra.

Mishap Wed 22-Apr-15 21:33:47

I do not have any problem with how Gransnet moderate. Anyone can report a post and there is no need for anyone else to know that this has happened, Gnet will make their decision according to the rules and life goes on.

I once had a post of mine deleted and, on reflection, I felt that the right decision had been made. No problem.

Katek Wed 22-Apr-15 21:57:03

Never put anything in writing you don't want on the front page.

My internet rule.

janerowena Wed 22-Apr-15 22:04:03

I think the mods on here are excellent.

I do wish we had a delete button though, for when we have second thoughts.

GrannyTwice Wed 22-Apr-15 22:07:02

FfFS - class sneak? Why don't some of you just grow up? I actually think that saying I'd reported what I did is the complee antithesis of being a sneak. I actually don't care much about the Pogs thing and et but I do bloody care about Phoenix's post that would have allowed that family and therefore those two girls to be identified if someone had so wished . Shame on you Phoenix for that post, shame on those of you who didn't report it and thought it was fine and shame on those of you just joining in having a go at me and even bringing in that comment from anothe thread about my being nicer in real life. Well done HQ for your shabby part in all this.

rosequartz Wed 22-Apr-15 22:26:56

why not try proper debate
I tried that on other threads GT only to be called names by you which brought any discussion to a halt.

we are free to report
Of course you are. It's not against the rules.
I did not call anyone the 'class sneak' but you may take that mantle if you wish.
Please feel free.

GrannyTwice Wed 22-Apr-15 22:34:52

Rose - what does your last post say about you? I just can't be bothered to debate at this level - the low altitude gives me a headache. There is clearly nothing more to be said as no one is going to shift position are they?

Anne58 Wed 22-Apr-15 22:39:07

GrannyTwice Shame on me? For what, exactly? There were no names mentioned in my post. Shame on everyone else on GN that didn't report it? So it would seem "shame" on everyone except you!

Now, I'm off to bed, feel free to rant away to your hearts content, but be careful all that venom and bile doesn't give you heartburn.

I think this whole thread needs deleting. NOW!

People are getting hurt.

rosequartz Wed 22-Apr-15 22:44:42

What does my post say about me?
It says I have developed a thicker skin since being on here and it also says that I don't like being bullied. It says too that there is no point in continuing a discussion when the other party descends to using abusive adjectives.
And that I agree with you - we are free to report other people.
I thought that was fairly clear.
