Gransnet or Nannynet?

(112 Posts)

I recently had a post deleted because it contravened the guidelines, it wasn't obscene, racist or a personal attack. It was a very bad taste joke the subject of which doesn't really matter. There is in British politics a long history of using satire and bad taste to highlight problems and I wonder why Gransnet feel this is unsuitable for the forums? I certainly would make the joke I made on here to my friends. It was posted on a thread with a warning about bad language so not for the fainthearted. Presumably Jonthan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" where he proposes that the Irish should eat their children as a solution to famine would be regarded as unacceptable and deleted. Come on Gransnet, either set up a warning system and make some posts more appropriate to thinking adults, or just accept the satire part of political debate, but please stop acting like Nanny, we are grown ups!

All of this totally passed me by. What didn't pass me by way the unpleasant comments directed at Soutra who surely didn't deserve any of it.

Completely and utterly confused

But slinging vitriol at other members is hardly in the spirit of liberalism either. Is it?

rosequartz Sat 16-May-15 18:24:41

Sorry pompa it is now a foursome

I am now singing!

There were four in the bed and the little one said
Roll over, roll over
So they all rolled over
and one fell out

Oh - perhaps five if janea joins us

grin

janeainsworth Sat 16-May-15 16:20:35

jingl why do you assume everyone reads your threads?
I didn't read it either.
confused

Charleygirl Sat 16-May-15 16:02:19

Sorry pompa it is now a foursome

pompa Sat 16-May-15 15:13:48

OMG, a threesome now, it get's worse grin

rosequartz Sat 16-May-15 15:08:46

I either didn't see it or can't remember (confused] - I don't read all the threads!
Perhaps I was with pompa and kitty blush but I can't remember that either! (sorry pompa)

pompa Sat 16-May-15 15:00:25

Careful Kitty or we might have to impose an "X" cert.

kittylester Sat 16-May-15 14:44:10

Don't rely on me*Teetime*, I didn't see it either! pompa and I were obviously together doing something else - shame I can't remember what! grin.

loopylou Sat 16-May-15 14:08:34

Didn't see so confused

Teetime Sat 16-May-15 14:04:50

I missed all this by being on holiday. I have a Gransnet meet up this week so am looking forward to be relayed all this first hand. wink

trisher Sat 16-May-15 14:03:10

I just checked my in box and no message explaining anything to me. Just the public post that it was deleted for breaking the forum guidelines. I think a rating code system would be good PG might be a problem though!!!!

pompa Sat 16-May-15 13:28:38

I didn't see any of the threads concerned. Where was I ?
If the OP issues a relevant warning in their OP, I am happy for most adult themes to be covered. I'd prefer not to see bad language in general threads, but if warning has been given (as I believe it was) it's up to me if I read further (which I probably would.).
However there are boundaries which should not be crossed and I trust GNHQ to police that boundary. I would hope that GN gave a full explanation to the poster why their post was deleted, otherwise how do they know here GN set those boundaries.

I does make a change for it not to be me, that is the whipping boy smile

We could of course use the BBFC rating codes -- U, PG, 18

Ana Sat 16-May-15 13:19:45

Don't GNHQ tell the member in question the reason for the deletion of their post? I'm sure they used to.

Soutra Sat 16-May-15 13:03:59

Jingl, I'm so sorry you found my response
it all seems a bit pointless, funny, I don't think so
Or
quoting from the Church Times again?
"plain nasty"

I wonder which part of what I said, which was of course about the posts qualified as "nasty" ?

Eloethan Sat 16-May-15 13:02:17

If I'm thinking of the same one - it did have some bad language in it - I thought it was quite funny. But perhaps it was something else.

I don't think bad language should be censored.

FarNorth Sat 16-May-15 12:55:12

I'm not worrying jingls. You and your little pals can teehee at bad language as much as you like.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 16-May-15 12:43:26

Soutra. The way you responded to me on that thread w as unnecessary. It was plain nasty.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 16-May-15 12:30:50

Don't worry your little head FarNorth. grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 16-May-15 12:29:50

Oh! FFS! I don't believe there as a single GNr who didn't read that thread. it was a title to draw in the curious ones. grin

Alright. Excluding you St soon.

soontobe Sat 16-May-15 12:10:57

I didnt see trishers joke.
I didnt see much of jingls? bad language thread.

From what trisher has posted of the joke, I too might assume that it has something to with the libel laws?

I dont know what the deletion message said.
I think I am right in saying that gransnet said they were going to look into having deletion messages a bit more accurate by giving a more detailed reason for deletions?

FarNorth Sat 16-May-15 11:51:53

I didn't realise the OP of that thread was meant to be joke, btw. It seemed like a straightforward statement of opinion to me so I was a little confused by all the tee-heeing that was going on.

kittylester Sat 16-May-15 11:51:14

Those attacks on Soutra were uncalled for. I didn't see it or notice anything wrong if I did see it but, flipping heck, Soutra is allowed to comment on a thread.

FarNorth Sat 16-May-15 11:46:03

Oh yes, I did see that. It seemed okay to me but maybe it was seen as a possibly libellous slur on politicians who have recently been appointed to certain posts. ??

Soutra Sat 16-May-15 11:42:29

FFS who says (snide comments flying towards me today or what) that I have delicate sensibilities .
In what way did I Stand in the way bah blah blah
I didn't see the bl**dy joke whatever it was probably because I have spent all of last week with my DH who was taken to A&E first thing on Monday morning, so please spare me your recriminations about curbing your " freedom of expression" and the snide comments.
If GNHQ saw fit to delete your post it was NOTHING to do with me, get it?and jingl I merely commented that I failed to find Huff Posts expletives particularly witty, but clearly not agreeing with you lines me up as a suitable Mary Whitehouse lookalike target.
