Meant to say, the article explains why they're called emoji and not emoticon. Emoticon is a contraction of emotion and icon. Emoji (invented by a Japanese company) is a combination of e and moji, which roughly translates as pictograph. Unlike emoticons, emoji are actual pictures, and haven't developed from text [e.g. :'( or :-) ] like emoticons. And emoticons are designed to express emotions, while emoji aren't, necessarily.
