We're VERY excited to announce that we are finally testing out a new site design! We've been working really hard to make sure it's easier to user and looks neater than the current format.

It is a test though and it may take a day or two to get used to. Apologies in advance for any teething problems - hopefully they'll be minimal. If you have any major problems logging in or you can't access certain things please post on this thread or email us at contactus. We'd love to have your thoughts. smile

Yes I agree. I've always thought the 'add comment' was a bit misleading because it implies you can respond directly to that specific post, but you can't. Your comment just goes to the end of the thread, by which point there could be dozens of comments in between yours and the one you are answering! All in all, it's a bit pointlesss.
We're not all glued to GN 24/7, with fingers ready on the keyboard to fire off replies as soon as a comment appears. Mostly we are reading through threads to catch up, and then we're so often unable to 'join in' properly as we've missed that particular boat and the conversation has moved on.

No it doesn't indent on this site and how it works on other forums is if you use the persons name in your reply they would get a notification it's a very handy tool as things can get quite mixed up if people have deviated into other subject as conversations do tend to meander

No, it doesn't work. Why do HQ have 'add comment' if it doesn't.

durhamjen Sat 12-Aug-17 12:08:48

Comment added to Bluebelle's post to test.

FarNorth Sat 12-Aug-17 11:23:38

That's because it's not a reply to a specific post, just getting added on the end.

durhamjen Sat 12-Aug-17 11:15:36

No, it doesn't.

durhamjen Sat 12-Aug-17 11:15:17

Just want to see if it indents on GN.

durhamjen Sat 12-Aug-17 11:14:49

But only if s/he knew about it.
I get the impression that people do not go back 50 or 100 posts on here.

BlueBelle Sat 12-Aug-17 06:17:13

Durhanjen ususally the sub comment is indented an inch so yes the other person would see it

Jalima1108 Fri 11-Aug-17 23:39:02

I've never used it before!
That was useful.

durhamjen Fri 11-Aug-17 23:05:38

I've thought that, too, but if the thread goes quickly, the person to whom you responded would not see it, would s/he?

jacksmum Fri 11-Aug-17 23:02:24

opps senior moment on my part ,!! lol, but wish it would put comment below the persons post that i want to answer, it is not always the OP post xx

durhamjen Fri 11-Aug-17 22:26:20

That's always been there, jacksmum.

jacksmum Fri 11-Aug-17 22:13:36

I was pleased to see "add comment" had been added but am disappointed that when you press this ,it adds comment to the bottom of the thread not to the comment by a person, you then have to type their name and hope they see it.

The only things I don't like are the wishy-washy blue/grey coloured band dividing the posts, the current lack of the 'italics' function and the strange little banner.

I find the rest of it OK...

M0nica Fri 11-Aug-17 19:37:51

I have really tried to get on with this new design, but to be honest, even though I am more secure finding my way round it, I still finding it too bright, too white and too uncompact, if you know what I mean.

mcem Fri 11-Aug-17 13:36:25

Better example

mcem Fri 11-Aug-17 13:30:13

Any suggestions on how to deal with this? On mobile site - kindle fire. In case of doubt or inability to see, all posrers' names are the same as the top post .

devongirl Fri 11-Aug-17 11:46:47

Lara PLEASE get rid of this bright white background!! The colourscheme was fine as it was before, if it ain't broke don't fix it!

varian Fri 11-Aug-17 11:45:55

It will be interesting to see which, if any, of our suggestions are taken up.

Ana Fri 11-Aug-17 11:41:07

Well, as you said in your previous post, GNHQ seem determined that we will have a strapline, whether we want one or not - even to the extent of asking MN for their opinion!

mcem Fri 11-Aug-17 11:35:50

Yes some suggestions but few were enthusiastic while many expressed indifference or dislike. Compared to this thread with all its concerns, the strapline one was very short lived.
To me that says that the strapline discussion is far from top of the list of GN priorities so why push it?

Ana Thu 10-Aug-17 18:08:10

I seem to remember there being quite a few suggestions mcem.

mcem Thu 10-Aug-17 18:05:54

Maybe MN was asked about the GN strapline suggestion because it was met with indifference here and seen as unnecessary, while the decision has been made that there will be one and consultation is deemed necessary.

There are some brilliant ideas on both threads - but no unanimous favourite yet. Tricky to sum up the site in a few words. confused But of course it matters what you think. We may well have got some of the design elements of the new site not quite right and we're really grateful for your patience while we sort that out and see how we can improve it.
