New site design being tested!

We're VERY excited to announce that we are finally testing out a new site design! We've been working really hard to make sure it's easier to user and looks neater than the current format.

It is a test though and it may take a day or two to get used to. Apologies in advance for any teething problems - hopefully they'll be minimal. If you have any major problems logging in or you can't access certain things please post on this thread or email us at contactus. We'd love to have your thoughts. smile

Oh I see - the one they asked us about the other week. Obviously our answers weren't good enough...hmm

merlotgran Thu 10-Aug-17 17:22:28

It doesn't matter what we think.

Ana Thu 10-Aug-17 17:16:29

What strapline? confused

Lona Thu 10-Aug-17 17:14:31

Yesterday they were asking Mumsnetters for opinions on our strap line, Baggs.
They don't ask our opinions on Mumsnet do they?

TriciaF Thu 10-Aug-17 16:55:18

Baggs - so you think GNHQ have designed this for those of us who are visually impaired?
If so, I withdraw my complaints. Maybe there are more members than I realised with this problem.

Baggs Thu 10-Aug-17 09:26:44

When my mum first started having trouble with Macular Degeneration, she said that 'arty farty' colours for backgrounds and print colours made things harder to read. She said black on white was best for her because of maximum contrast.

Which would seem to suggest that the new Gransnet desktop colours have got it right for people who struggle to see things clearly.

Baggs Thu 10-Aug-17 09:22:58

Brightness is easy to change on most machines.

Baggs Thu 10-Aug-17 09:21:19

Oh, and I'm glad there's no "strap" line.

Baggs Thu 10-Aug-17 09:20:12

The new banner is better than the old one, though I didn't dislike the old one.

Blued stuff shows up better.

mcem Thu 10-Aug-17 09:13:43

Sorry that was a bad example - I see there were several duplicate posts but they were from paddyann not greyduster.
Previous examples showed a series of different posts but with the OP's name against each one.

mcem Thu 10-Aug-17 09:06:36

Has anyone else found this strange layout?

Indinana Wed 09-Aug-17 21:57:38

sorry, missing apostrophe - "there's"

Indinana Wed 09-Aug-17 21:56:47

Yes, please, please let us have an edit button. Many of us have been asking for this repeatedly over the years. I cannot understand your reasoning - yes, OK, it may be that people will delete/edit their posts and subsequent replies won't make sense. But so what? Other sites have this facility and yes, sometimes, posts get deleted. But it's obvious that theres a missing post, and readers just move on! And, come to that, it happens on here if a post is deleted by GNHQ for whatever reason. I have often been left wondering what comments after a deletion are on about! It doesn't particularly interfere with the readability of the thread though.

NanKate Wed 09-Aug-17 21:20:30

Many of us gave asked for an edit button. It is perfectly possible as I use mine on Facebook regularly.

Please listen to us HQ. You have gone worryingly quiet. ?

Jalima1108 Wed 09-Aug-17 20:24:00

is this why I have had a headache this week? It is very bright and have tried to tone down the brightness but not succeeded.

TriciaF Wed 09-Aug-17 20:21:37

So GNHQ - please tell us WHY you've changed it?

Alima Wed 09-Aug-17 20:09:41

I HATE THE NEW DESIGN!!!!
As well as being uneasy on the eye every time I hit "active" I get "acronyms". Oh bums and bits!

Swanny Wed 09-Aug-17 19:22:24

Following on from yggdrasil s comment on Monday about the 'Active I'm on Watching Unanswered Last hour Last day FAQs Acronyms Advanced Search' buttons, I also find these very hard to see. They seem to merge into the 'Gransnet forums' heading and become invisible. The separate buttons were much easier to find and use.

I just cannot get used to the glare from the whiteness of the background. Haven't mentioned it on my previous posts as I thought I'd get used to it but I haven't, and am still screwing up my eyes trying to read posts sad

MargaretX Wed 09-Aug-17 16:49:25

I can't feel comfortable with the new site. The font is one used for theses and long articles and books, so that the eye can follow the printed word for pages and pages. .

Its not necessary here. I preferred the old site
I bit of colour contrast would relieve the boring white- cum - grey.
GN is not so interesting at the moment anyhow, this site could finish it off for me.

goldengirl Wed 09-Aug-17 14:14:22

I've tried and tried to like the new font - but I'm afraid I don't! It's just not 'goldengirl' friendly and I can't put my finger on why. Words like 'harsh' 'forked' 'rough' come to mind and it's leading to an uncomfortable 'jagged' read.

Bobbysgirl19 Wed 09-Aug-17 11:47:07

Thank you shysal.

glammanana Wed 09-Aug-17 11:42:41

I've tried all week with the new font and can only compare it with the writings in "Janet & John" books my children had yrs ago, sorry for that GNHQ.

mcem Wed 09-Aug-17 08:45:58

Have just discovered on mobile site that there's an arrow on the right which gives a dropdown menu listing what was on the horizontal bar - last, previous, I'm on, etc and it includes
unwatch this thread .
New site, New language??

cornergran Wed 09-Aug-17 08:26:46

Still no 'last' button on some but not all threads on the iPhone cherrytree when it's on mobile site, but the button is present and correct using an iPad which accesses GN via the desktop site. No idea why.

I experimented a bit and noticed I am finding the site much harder to read on the phone, too grey on desktop and even harder on mobile, need my reading glasses now, didn't before. My eyes haven't changed! It's a bit glary on desktop on the iPad.

Oh well. As alima said, new doesn't mean improved for all.

BlueBelle Wed 09-Aug-17 07:57:27

PS because there's no edit button hint hint
I have a last button even if I change to desktop on my iPad Cherry
