We're VERY excited to announce that we are finally testing out a new site design! We've been working really hard to make sure it's easier to user and looks neater than the current format.

It is a test though and it may take a day or two to get used to. Apologies in advance for any teething problems - hopefully they'll be minimal. If you have any major problems logging in or you can't access certain things please post on this thread or email us at contactus. We'd love to have your thoughts. smile

Well, I googed Web Design from Scratch and numerous sites came up - I coudn't find the two paragraphs!

mcem Mon 07-Aug-17 09:36:25

bluebelle may I suggest you google web design from scratch.
It shows two paragraphs - one with and one without serifs.
The idea is to read both and decide which you find easier to read.
Hope that helps.

I have now discovered that if I switch to stronger reading specs - the ones I use for close sewing work ( +2.5 instead of my usual + 2 for reading) my eyes are less strained.
Do you think it's reasonable to expect readers to do this?
How many of us would have that option?

BlueBelle Mon 07-Aug-17 08:55:42

Can someone explain please everyone is going on about the font but to me it doesn't look any different and is perfectly easy to read as was the old one help please as I m just not getting it at all

Iam64 Mon 07-Aug-17 08:51:43

Can it have a more modern font? This one is so dated and I find it more difficult to read.

rubylady Mon 07-Aug-17 08:24:41

I like it, thank you GNHQ. It helps my eyes. Plus, it's nice to be back and joining in on other threads. Yippee! Xxx

I had to build a new website from scratch for my school. It wasn't an easy task. I had to keep making adjustments to layout, fonts etc. It takes ages to get it right and I asked people to be patient whilst I got help from the techies to sort the teething problems. So hang on in there GNHQ.

In saying that, I do think the site is a bit "grey" and does need more contrast. Also a more modern readable font would be preferable.

Not at all. This is the testing phase and we are taking on board all of your comments to make improvements along the way.

It's only possible to get your opinions by trying it out though.

We are working through all your comments and suggestions fear not

Gagagran Mon 07-Aug-17 07:46:14

Well said kitty - I absolutely concur with your post.

I don't know why they bothered asking us at all because we will just have to put up with whatever is decided on high. Hey ho!

kittylester Mon 07-Aug-17 07:14:44

Having given it a fair trial, I really dislike the lack of contrast on the threads and the list of active threads. I'm not keen on the font either.

I hope GNHQ take on board our comments. I feel that it might have been more polite to give us options before imposing something on us.

And, I do realise that GN is not run for our benefit but we do need to be kept on side or we might just drift off.

Also of concern to me is what other changes are afoot following on from the 'why do you come here' thread. We did, after all, have the cafe imposed on us and I'm not sure what that did except give us a bigger header.

I must be going mad yesterday I swear there were over 300 posts on this thread today there's 248 ?? Am I going mad

Apologies if this has already been mentioned. Have to use the phone for the first time today. On some threads - including this one - I don't have a 'last' button to go to the end of the thread. I'm pretty sure it was ok on the iPad.

On the desktop no twittering adverts!

Cherrytree59 Sun 06-Aug-17 21:04:29

It would be nice if HQ would answer the question put forward by a few of the GNers

Why have the powers that be deemed it necessary to change the site's layout typeface, colour etc??

I would be interested to know if the change is to be beneficial to the users (GNers) or the GN sponsors

In the past myself and other GNers have requested more/better emoji
But we were informed by the techies via HQ that this is not possible.
Have we now got new techies with far reaching abilities ?
If so what about more emoji

Or is it just that the grey background matches our hairgrin

Do all questions posted on here get put on the Gransnet Facebook page? I have only just seen it.

BlueBelle Sun 06-Aug-17 20:52:05

When I go on desktop on my iPad and in portrait it still doesn't look anything like before for me anjanela
I find it really weird that we all seem to be seeing different things
I m guessing desktop on a desktop, mobile on an iPad or tablet or desktop on iPad /tablet or mobile on a phone must all show up differently

ajanela Sun 06-Aug-17 20:38:03

Now just clicked desktop site at the bottom and low and behold it looks like the old sight. I feel more comfortable. So if I look at it on my phone I should click mobile site, and on my iPad can be both but the mobile sight is better viewed in portrait

Might be a good idea to explain that in your opening post. This is all very interesting.

ajanela Sun 06-Aug-17 20:23:39

Just looked up serif fonts for those like me who didn't understand. Times Roman is serif as it has little strokes added to the letters.

ajanela Sun 06-Aug-17 20:12:21

Re my last comments. I was looking at the site on my iPad in landscape view and there was a lot of white area. I went back to the Home page and tuned my iPad around to Portrait view and the home page looks much more interesting. I see the sight has been designed for the large number of people who view it on a mobile phone.

M0nica Sun 06-Aug-17 20:08:59

Ana, although you may not notice whether there is a serif or not, and few of us do when just reading, we do notice when things are easy to read and when they are not. Look at sites that you find easy to read and those that you find difficult and then look at the type face.

ajanela Sun 06-Aug-17 20:05:30

First thing I did was type my message in my name box! Like others I thought my computer had gone wrong whilst I was out! I have been looking around the site, but I think the old homepage was more exciting for new members to the site. With the menu across the top and lots of announcements to links on the home page I feel the old site showed more of what gransnet has to offer. Not sure people who are not that computer literate will know to click those 3 lines in a circle to see the menu or to click gransnet to return to the home page. Isn't Home usually in a drop down menu.

I like my post being highlighted, so I can easily see what I posted and read on from there.
It is very clean and simple but maybe a bit sterile.
Just trying to give my first reactions. It seems to have turned into an information site rather than a magazine, chatty sight

Final complaint, those annoying little adverts, flickering away there in the centre of every page I go on. I know it is the way to pay for the sight.

Oriel Sun 06-Aug-17 20:03:56

Don't know why ana - it just is!

Lona Sun 06-Aug-17 19:59:47

I can't tell the difference either ?

Ana Sun 06-Aug-17 19:57:50

I haven't really noticed, M0nica. It doesn't seem to bother me...

M0nica Sun 06-Aug-17 19:52:29

Ana How many websites you have used recently use serif fonts. Print on paper and print on screen are very different animals and need to be treated differently.
