New site design being tested!

We're VERY excited to announce that we are finally testing out a new site design! We've been working really hard to make sure it's easier to user and looks neater than the current format.

It is a test though and it may take a day or two to get used to. Apologies in advance for any teething problems - hopefully they'll be minimal. If you have any major problems logging in or you can't access certain things please post on this thread or email us at contactus. We'd love to have your thoughts. smile

I'm struggling to feel even a teeny bit excited about this new design, never mind very excited grin

But they say they're VERY EXCITED to be testing out the new design, and have been working really hard to make sure it's 'easier to use' (for us doddering old fools, presumably! grin)

Why do I keep having this sneaking feeling that GNHQ aren't really taking our comments seriously because, "Oh well, they're all old, of course they're going to complain - old people never like change"?

Day 2. Still do not like it.

There are a whole range of standardised tests that can be used to test websites on readability, usability and friendliness. I am sure those who redesigned the site know of them. Have they used them?

When I type in the message box Pogs my font is exactly the same as on the site, same font, same size

POGS Sat 05-Aug-17 13:40:59

To no particular poster but to GNHQ.

I previously said it is 'wishy washy' . So much so if it wasn't for the poster name the thread just reads as one long post almost. Little definition!. I appreciate we can use our 'setting' to enhance colour and brilliance but that throws the whole of what we view outside of GN into abnormality.

As for the 'size' issue I reiterate on my tablet a long post takes up the whole screen!

A genuine question , certainly not intended to upset anybody. On my tablet I can customize the font size by using 'setting ' is that not available on all forms of equipment ? If the previous format was difficult to read is that not a personal issue that could be easily remedied but now we have to keep scrolling to simply follow a thread that goes into more depth than those predominated by one liners because the print is large.

Sorry to repeat my point but I am left wondering what was wrong with the format before and why the colour change. If it was for 'modernity' I don't get it.

Obviously when typing our message to post we can see the difference in font size between that in the message box and the thread and I prefer the original font size for mostly the reason given 'you get more words per inch' , stating the b------ng obvious I know.

Can someone tell me why I no longer seem able to add emoticons from my keyboard list to private messages? Could do it before. And also, why the keyboard seems to have become backlit with a pink tinge in the private message function that it doesn't have when posting, as now? It's very strange!

Notme Sat 05-Aug-17 13:02:16

I'm getting used to it. Scrap previous comment.

Less eye strain.

Charleygirl Sat 05-Aug-17 12:51:33

I agree, my usename titling this message is very light and grey and even GNHQs normal green is very pale. My description would be wishy washy- little stands out except the font size which I love.

ninathenana Sat 05-Aug-17 12:29:01

I find it totally baffling that even when on the same site some can see what others can't and to dosen't appear to be down to the type of device your using.
confusedconfused

Chewbacca Sat 05-Aug-17 11:41:30

Only the posts from GNHQ are in pink on my tablet, and my own posts are highlighted in blue. Everything else is grey. I still find the font easier to read though.

Indinana Sat 05-Aug-17 11:37:51

"The big advance is that my own posts are now blue on the laptop as well as on the mobile devices."

Mine aren't sad. They're not highlighted on my iMac and I thought that might just be a quirk of the Apple system, so now I'm on my Windows laptop and it's just the same, no highlighting of my posts.

JackyB Sat 05-Aug-17 11:13:45

What's still missing is a list of posts at the side. So often someone mentions a post by someone else, and it's impossible to find that particular post, a search of the page is only a help, if the post itself is on the same page, otherwise you are hopping to and fro and in the end have forgotten why you were looking for that post after all.

Another site I am on has existed since 1999 and has always had such a summary list at the side of a thread so that you can click on a name and have a quick look at the previous post referred to. I suppose because it's a feature that is now nearly 20 years old, it is considered old-fashioned.

I'm not getting all this grey many have mentioned - neither on tablet nor on laptop. The big advance is that my own posts are now blue on the laptop as well as on the mobile devices.

varian Sat 05-Aug-17 11:07:34

Why can't we have a search facility which presents the results in chronological order?

varian Sat 05-Aug-17 11:06:26

Please use a more modern sans serif font - this one is so dated it reinforces the old codger image.

goldengirl Sat 05-Aug-17 10:59:44

It's OK but I still think the logo is rather old fashioned and am disappointed with it. The font is also old fashioned but if posts areeasier to read for most posters then that's fine by me.

Blinko Sat 05-Aug-17 10:55:06

The only comment I'd like to make is please, please, please can we have a sans serif typeface? This one looks too TNR for me.

Indinana Sat 05-Aug-17 10:50:49

"Wow! Smileys without having to type it all out!"

Again, not on the desktop site. You've always been able to do this on the mobile site FarNorth

Indinana Sat 05-Aug-17 10:48:24

Oh I see - the blue and pink highlights are just on the mobile site.
And no, FarNorth, I don't think they are making it more like Mumsnet, because they have always had the OP's subsequent posts highlighted over there (in green), and not just on the mobile site, but on the desktop site too. We still don't appear to have that feature on the desktop site hmm

Ana Sat 05-Aug-17 10:47:23

I'm finding the numbers difficut to read - they seem squashed in, somehow.

Luckygirl Sat 05-Aug-17 10:44:27

Mumsnet has a sans serif font - and is all the better for it!

Blinko Sat 05-Aug-17 10:44:12

Gillybob, Friday 16:35 post. Hilarious!

FarNorth Sat 05-Aug-17 10:42:44

I like having my own posts highlighted. Would like OP posts to be highlighted too.
It's much easier to see the date and time. smile Wow! Smileys without having to type it all out! sunshine

Jalima1108 Sat 05-Aug-17 10:38:46

I've got it now Ana - thank you!

This new layout is confusing me (it doesn't take a lot these days)

FarNorth Sat 05-Aug-17 10:37:01

Oh, I get it. You're making it more like Mumsnet. Hmm. Will see what I think when I get used to it.
