New site design being tested!

We're VERY excited to announce that we are finally testing out a new site design! We've been working really hard to make sure it's easier to user and looks neater than the current format.

It is a test though and it may take a day or two to get used to. Apologies in advance for any teething problems - hopefully they'll be minimal. If you have any major problems logging in or you can't access certain things please post on this thread or email us at contactus. We'd love to have your thoughts. smile

ps Mumsnet have now had to add Last 15 minutes!

TriciaF Sun 20-Aug-17 19:57:05

I noticed today that since the changes Last Day posts have been restricted to 50 topics. Last hour too probably.
I looked in at Mumsnet and they have the same.
Makes it easier for the moderators to keep an eye on what's being posted. Things don't get out of hand.

So theory trumps customer choice. Despite the fact that the vast majority - not just some - really dislike the font, we're stuck with it anyway.
Surely you must see the levels of dissatisfaction expressed over several threads including the blue to black choices because we see these explanations as impositions.
The single overriding complaint is the font but the answer seems to be - tough if you don't like it that's what's happening !!
Appalling customer/user service!

It looks like the blue to black change is probably a personal choice one then, kitty.
Jalima, yes, we agree with you. There are a few changes due to go live sometime on Monday which hopefully will improve the layout and make it a bit easier to read.

Charleygirl Fri 18-Aug-17 21:58:41

I agree with Wheniwasyourage Kittylester - I also deliberately changed from blue to black and I will think twice before I discuss anything more than what food I feed my cat because I hate the thought of anything I write ending up on Facebook or Twitter, neither of which I want anything to do with. I think that you will find that GN has changed and will be more bland in future. Whether we have the political discussions again is another matter.

Jalima1108 Fri 18-Aug-17 20:27:24

I don't mind the font but I think we do need a better layout and more differentiation on the Active, I'm On and Last Hour pages if possible please.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 18-Aug-17 18:09:57

kittylester, if you have a look at the thread (whose title I've forgotten) about threads being put on to the Facebook page, you will see that several of us, me included, have chosen to make our profiles private now. Apologies if you have been posting on that thread - I blame my senior hours moments grin

TriciaF Fri 18-Aug-17 17:36:35

Thanks for your replies, Lara.
I didn't realise that forums had to conform to certain accessibility/ readability rules. Another world of regulations.
BTW the font style doesn't bother me.
Tx

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 18-Aug-17 16:48:37

Thanks kittylester. Will add it to the list to take a look at. If you are usually blue (i.e. have added info to your profile) and are now for no reason black, could you email contactus and let us know so we can take a look at specific instances?

kittylester Fri 18-Aug-17 16:38:26

Thanks for your informative post Lara.

Can you explain why some people who were blue appear not to be now? Is that their choice or a blip?

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 18-Aug-17 16:26:28

Thanks for all your feedback on the threads. As we said the design is a work in progress and we'll be ironing out any blips in the coming weeks.

We needed to update the old design because it wasn't scoring highly enough on accessibility/readability standard testing. We also felt Gransnet deserved an updated, more modern looking design.

Also, to reassure you, the actual functionality of the site is exactly the same as before - we haven't changed anything on that score so it's just the look and feel of the site that has been affected.

The comments on the font seem to be varied - some of you like it, others definitely don't. But we want to explain that we didn't come to the decision on this particular font lightly.

Firstly, we had to change the font because the one we were using is not designed for the high contrast screens of today (incl mobiles, tablets etc).

We chose a serif font for two reasons:
a) it's generally preferred and seen as easier to read (particularly on newer devices)
b) it's actually a more modern update and used by many of the most popular news sites - e.g. Guardian, Times, Telegraph and more, where there are longer chunks of text. We got there before Mumsnet this time grin.

We're working with tech to sort out the most urgent usability issues (Last not showing up in mobile has just been fixed today, for instance) and we're going to get these sorted out as soon as we can for you. We're also going to fix the highlighted boxes for your posts, ours and the OP's.

We're also looking at how we can make the forums less grey and have more differentiation between posts but this may take a little longer to implement.

Here are just a few of the changes we've made and why:
- Increased body text size – current best practice is to have a larger font size to make it more readable across all devices. Our data shows that more and more of you are accessing the site on your mobiles and ipads and we need to adapt because of this.
- Increased contrast between foreground and background colours by making the background colours lighter. This helps make the text stand out and be more legible.
- Changed the body font to a serif, used a slab serif for the headings and made the headings much larger. This provides better contrast between headings and text, making it easier to differentiate between different types of content.

The only reason we'd undertake a huge change like this (and we also know it's going to be impossible to keep everyone happy) is to improve the site in the long term and hopefully once the smaller more niggly issues have been corrected the overall experience will be a better one for most of you.
We hope this has answered all of your questions for now but please do continue to email us if you find or see something that isn't working quite right. And thank you again for being so forthcoming for all the comments (both good and bad!)

BlueBelle Fri 18-Aug-17 06:22:43

I should have added for a day ?

kittylester Fri 18-Aug-17 06:19:27

I think that's called cutting off your nose to spite you face!

BlueBelle Fri 18-Aug-17 05:17:14

They think we ll all cave in we re just a load of old biddies who like to moan about everything They d get a shock if we all stopped posting

MiniMouse Thu 17-Aug-17 19:33:31

They don't know us very well, then FarNorth! wink

FarNorth Thu 17-Aug-17 19:12:32

Probably not rubysong.
They most likely hope we'll get used to it and cry ourselves out of our temper like toddlers stop moaning.

rubysong Thu 17-Aug-17 18:50:03

Very sorry that I can't find my dear old desktop version. There doesn't seem to be much activity on GN at the moment. We don't like the new version! (Is anybody listening to us?)

TriciaF Thu 17-Aug-17 18:31:33

After reading the last few pages - is anyone pleased with the changes?
And my question from earlier, why change the old format?
I've given up for the moment. And I had a really good new topic following my recent visit to family. hmm

kittylester Thu 17-Aug-17 17:33:59

First time that I've logged on to 'I'm on' on my computer and I know that the last poster is shown especially because I asked for it but I don't like it so please take it away again! It seems to be very random and quite disconcerting as I go down the list of threads to suddenly see a name way out to the right especially as the definition between each thread is unclear.

TriciaF Thu 17-Aug-17 16:50:19

Is there something wrong? Have I been banned? Or need to login? (if so , how?)
I've been staying with family since Sunday and came back to an alien layout. The coverage of the range of discussions is so narrow now.
sad
and I was really looking forward to coming back to my old 'friends'.

FarNorth Thu 17-Aug-17 15:47:27

oops, still can't edit, a well-loved feature still here from the 'old' GN.

*what the final result will be.

FarNorth Thu 17-Aug-17 15:46:00

It's like living on a building site, with no idea what the final result will , or when, or if actually this is it.
Getting tired of it now.

Elegran Thu 17-Aug-17 10:24:42

Can I assume that the search box for the SITE and the FORUMS is being reorganised?

There is still a search box which :-
a) has a lot of advertising items at the top of it and
b) seems to search the entire internet, which is not what you want when you just want to find a GN post that you wish to refer back to.

What is needed is a forum search of Gransnet posts, with a choice of range of dates and of whether you are searching for a poster or for a key word or phrase within a post, the results arranged in chronological order with the search-words in bold and a few words either side of them displayed, and a separate general search of the whole of Gransnet, including articles and recipes and so on.

It would have to be designed to choose to search within the site, not just be a copy-and-paste of a generic internet search engine.

Elegran Thu 17-Aug-17 10:09:11

Well, I have now completely stopped looking at the "Last Hour" list, because it tells me nothing.

Previously I have always glanced at it for a quick glimpse at what the latest posts were saying. The "Active" and "Last Day" lists were never any use, because they only told me that something was going on on those threads, but not what, so I had to open the threads to find out, whereas the "Last Hour" had the first line or so of recent posts visible. Now they are all the same (useless) format.

So now that I only have the threads I am already on, I won't be joining any interesting new discussions. (There may be a collective sigh of relief at that.)

GracesGranMK2 Thu 17-Aug-17 10:08:02

I'm giving up for the rest of the day - it is too frustrating to navigate. I wonder which Wonderland we will be in when I return.
