Flaming - what is GNHQs approach to this?

I apologise for being far too easily tempted into replying to the 'flamers', but I do wonder if GN has any rules that apply to such posters.

A discussion on a thread, usually a politics one, can be bouncing backwards and forwards about the topic and then they turn up. There are only a few but you can recognise them by the way they never put forward an actual political argument. The most important thing they can come up with is personal criticism of either the politicians they have chosen as their target or the people who may be making positive point about the politics of that person or the party they don't like either.

This is not discussion but a deliberate attempt to inflame the thread in an attempt to derail the reasoned argument they don't like. On many forums they would be stopped from doing this. What, if anything, are GNHQs views on this. Surely, on a forum that has created a 'non-judgemental' space in the form of the café, we should expect flaming to be kept from disrupting other people's posts?

I’m gobsmacked.

LauraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 27-Oct-17 09:29:57

Deliberate attempts to derail or inflame a thread is ultimately against our guidelines.

MawBroon Fri 27-Oct-17 09:43:44

confused
The “politics” threads surely don’t feature in the “café” so I am not clear as to the relevance.
However News and Politics seems to me an area where exchanges get heated -does that constitute “flaming”?
I have to admit I don’t know what you are getting at GGMK2 perhaps I am blithely unaware, but if there is a specific instance you are complaining about, why not report it and leave GNHQ to exercise their discretion?
We regularly have threads/posts complaining “in general” about either negativity or ill-temper or personal comments and then everybody feels guilty and thinks “was it me” and not infrequently it all descends into another bunfight.
Could you be more specific? Or are we then back at a thread about a thread? <sigh>

In this case I think it may be thread about a thread.
See thread about the Warm home scheme.

trisher Fri 27-Oct-17 09:48:36

Oh I know what she's getting at and apart from anything else it is bloody boring.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 27-Oct-17 10:52:07

Annsixty. You have attempted to turn the Warm Home thread into one that references this. You did not refer to anything to do with the WHD but just attempted to imflame ... which you appear to be doing here too.

Just ask yourself if you are talking about the topic or just stirring and taking the thread off topic and you will soon learn to identify what 'flaming' is. It is very annoying, boring and often banned on forums as it disrupts the conversations - not on here it appears and I wondered why.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 27-Oct-17 10:55:03

Just seen GNHQ's reply. I would be great Laura if you could put the odd comment into threads so that people understand when they are doing this. It appears they don't and as we are an older cohort perhaps that is not surprising.

FarNorth Fri 27-Oct-17 11:00:33

It shouldn't be beyond us, tho, to simply ignore posts that seem not to be relevant to a thread, or that just don't interest us.

Baggs Fri 27-Oct-17 11:02:05

HQ can't read all the threads. Anything deemed to be breaking forum rules should be reported so that HQ knows where to look and make judgment.

So next time you think someone's post is a flame, GG, report it as such.

Baggs Fri 27-Oct-17 11:03:04

Or, yes, what farnorth suggests. Ignore or steamroller over it by presenting further and better argument.

Baggs Fri 27-Oct-17 11:04:52

Opening posts like this thread's just come across as whining. Report and accept the "referee's" decision, ignore, or up your argument.

MawBroon Fri 27-Oct-17 11:14:28

I am still not getting this. Who, what and where is this “inflaming” happening other than this thread which seems to be aiming to start the proverbial argument in an empty room. .
Don’t have a go at annsixty GGMK2 her comment came after what you kicked off, so just get, or stick to your point please.

Charleygirl Fri 27-Oct-17 11:19:38

What has annsixty done wrong except breathe? I agree with MawBroon.

Tottylimejuice Fri 27-Oct-17 12:03:45

Blinking eck!, 5 or 10 minute argument again, just grow up, ignore what YOU feel is not relevant to YOU and let everyone just get on with conversing on differing topics with differing opinions. There is no right or wrong here and everyone is entitled to be DIFFERENT, stop looking for flipping trouble. (I am now taking my own advise and ignoring the irrelevant to ME posts!). Oh and I end with a ? as that’s just the way I am (nice lol).

I just impulse posted on the Megan whatshername post about someone called Martha !! I am sure I will be soundly berated for it but really don't care. I do not even open the Political posts now but do get annoyed when innocuous post are turned into a political rant. Waiting with baited breath for the comments on the Steam Mop wink

lemongrove Fri 27-Oct-17 15:32:21

The OP has started this thread because she doesn’t like comments from certain posters including myself, and yes, it’s just whining, running to Mummy kind of stuff, pathetic!

annsixty Fri 27-Oct-17 15:42:52

I " escaped" for a couple of hours with a friend and have just logged on.
I am sitting on the naughty step now without a cup of tea.
What more can I do? ?

kittylester Fri 27-Oct-17 15:47:38

Best off out of it Ann!!

lemongrove Fri 27-Oct-17 15:51:20

Take no notice of it Ann then go and make your cup of tea? I know that I have.brew have some cake as well.smile

Greyduster Fri 27-Oct-17 15:52:19

Get off the norty step because you don't deserve to be there! It's getting to the stage where none of us dare open our mouths to express an opinion. I think GN is going down the tubes.

maryeliza54 Fri 27-Oct-17 15:53:36

Derailing is a well known technique employed generally by right of centre posters - I suppose ignoring them or making fun of them are best responses. However, when its a serious thread that's discussing serious suffering then I think it's unacceptable to start derailing for example discussing the state of someone's shoes when the issue under discussion is very late payments of benefits. What I really can't stand are those whiney threads about "Why is everyone so heated/angry and I'm scared to post' - pathetic. These threads also are usually started by/agreed with by right of centre posters as well. Interesting that, isn't it?

lemongrove Fri 27-Oct-17 15:58:47

Derailing is also used by left of centre posters! ?
Threads wander, and that’s a fact, sad that some thread police posters want to shut down all dissent, and only present their own earnest views.

lemongrove Fri 27-Oct-17 16:01:11

maryeliza if you are new, you should be aware, that threads about threads are not allowed, and will be shut down by GNHQ.?

loopyloo Fri 27-Oct-17 16:05:10

Am off to the steam mop post, to see how hot it can get.
