I think that is what I said Baggs. You all keep going with this. It makes it very peaceful elsewhere and I can live with that.

Flaming - what is GNHQs approach to this?
(152 Posts)I apologise for being far too easily tempted into replying to the 'flamers', but I do wonder if GN has any rules that apply to such posters.
A discussion on a thread, usually a politics one, can be bouncing backwards and forwards about the topic and then they turn up. There are only a few but you can recognise them by the way they never put forward an actual political argument. The most important thing they can come up with is personal criticism of either the politicians they have chosen as their target or the people who may be making positive point about the politics of that person or the party they don't like either.
This is not discussion but a deliberate attempt to inflame the thread in an attempt to derail the reasoned argument they don't like. On many forums they would be stopped from doing this. What, if anything, are GNHQs views on this. Surely, on a forum that has created a 'non-judgemental' space in the form of the café, we should expect flaming to be kept from disrupting other people's posts?
How elegran "treats people" is just fine, gg.
Been reading Nancy Mitford GG ?
No real idea how whatever it was that has caused so much aggro.
This talk of "flamers" on a forum really puzzles me. and there have been a heck of a lot of such rows discussions over the years.
If you do not like what has been said you can say so and argue, or walk away. Walking away leaves the perpetrator with no one to argue with and this spoils their fun.
Surely if someone does not like something that has been said it is up to that person to decide whether or not to ignore or take offence. Some posters do seem to suffer greatly from "last worditis."
I find it perfectly easy (and very satisfying) to leave such a disagreement. That way the alleged perpetrator of the argument does not get any more fuel with which to stir up others.
Not mine Annie. You keep posting. I just feel it is good manners to reply.
You "vote" Lemons? What do you expect that to do? You then talk about depriving the thread of oxygen while wafting the O2 in its direction. And, then - you comment - that it "was never really worth commenting on in the first place".
Doesn't that seem illogical?
Just to set your mind at rest - no dubious reasons as explained, but apparently not read, several times. I am sure you will be just as happy as I am that the issue was clarified - on page 1.
What I class as feeding a need, pity
Well, I vote to deprive this flaming silly thread of any more oxygen, so it burns itself out, it was never really worth commenting on in the first place.I guess that it was started for dubious reasons.
I don't think my replies have been either noisy or overexcited MawBroon so I wonder who you are talking about? When I got home this afternoon it was really interesting to see who had posted and what they had said as it always is when catching up with threads.
As for something behind it - well obviously, over time, we have had some flaming or I wouldn't have asked the question. Whatever anyone tried to suggest otherwise that was really all it was. Trying to derail a thread by simply making inflammatory remarks is annoying and boring so I wanted to know how our moderators saw this. That is what I said in the OP and I haven't changed from that.
No as I said I’m out, just wondering if there was something behind the current brouhaha.
Never mind.
Not at all MawBroon. I am quite happy to keep replying for as long as you want to keep ... er, posting.
What is niggling you today GGMK2?
You seem determined to pick a fight with somebody!
Treat yourself to a
or a
and ease up
It's good to know that's how you treat people Elegran.
I don't think HQ would like to be inundated with reports either. My post was a humourous one, made tongue-in-cheek. Sometimes a light touch is more effective than a heavy hand and turneth away wrath.
Another more helpful way to proceed is to ignore an isolated post from someone who don't usually girn and whinge, and treat it as a wrong-side-of-the-bed-today groan. There are posters whose life problems are well known to others (those whose reading is not confined to a narrow interest band) and who are entitled to a few groans.
Sorry Annie but that doesn't seem to make sense. Flaming is not about, as I have now said very many times, people you 'don't like'. In fact I think I just said that very explicitly. I don't think GNHQ will thank you for reporting on that basis.
Be interesting Elegran, well for those who are more troubled by posters they don't like than by the thread posted on.
To be honest Elegran it doesn't happen that often. People don't like other people's opinions and things get heated but we are talking about someone joining a thread with the sole intent of inflaming the situation - that is the bit you and others seem unable to understand. I have a feeling you will report hurt feelings because someone doesn't agree rather frequently from what you say - which is not flaming.
I don't think GNHQ will be overburdened by my reports and I certainly would not ask them to keep statistics but if you think that is how GN should be run you could always try asking.
That is the obvious answer - everyone reporting every instance they see. GNHQ may be snowed in under an avalanche of reports, and on some threads there may well be more reported posts than unreported ones.
It would interesting to see statistics on who reports most and whose reports are upheld most by HQ, who receives most complaints and how many of them get a reprimand, and so on. Just imagine - there could be threads on how unfair it is that certain posters get away with murder while others are clobbered every time someone reports them, We could have a league table - first and second division, and premier league for the star offenders! There would be stiff competition!
I’m out.
Does that mean you will report yourself
Well, there we have it from the horse's mouth.
Unbelievable.
Gobsmacked as another poster said.
You seem to want to carry on stirring. I have not said anything that did not relate to the original thread on the forum. You may not like the argument I put forward but flaming is nothing to do with that. It is about personal attack aimed only at causing trouble, arguments and anger with no relation to the thread topic. I am not surprised at the people who don't seem to understand. Now we have clarification from GN I will just report any flaming I see - every time.
I had this phrase in mind GGMK2
Often by commenting on the person or the way they posted rather than the substance of their post
I found it a gratuitous attack on annsixty and her perfectly justifiable remark.
So I clearly have no idea of what you are talking about in your inflammation complaint. And do you know what? I am glad that I do not subscribe to a nit-picking set of rules and regulations which seem to have assumed a greater importance in your thinking than the right of members to contribute to a discussion.
This is not the JCR , we are a group of people who (presumably) enjoy each other’s online company and NOT some adolescent debating society.
If I have to check that I am not inflaming!steamrollering, trolling or whatever each time I wish to post them frankly I’d rather keep my meanderings to myself from now on
It wasn't Jalima - what makes you say that? I put it on as a general point.
Annsixty seems to think I could write this relating to another thread before I had even seen it and posted on it.
As is this OP
Now you are using one thread to talk about another thread Jalima.
