Suddenly, this morning, I have opened my email and found a few emails stating that someone has posted something on a thread I'm on .

Does anyone know how I can turn off these notifications ,they have the potential to totally clog up my inbox and I'm more than capable of tracking back threads I'm interested in to read new threads.

Thanks Laura!

Update on the above. The feature has now been disabled and you shouldn't be getting any more notifications until we've fixed it so that you are able to turn off notifications yourselves on your preferences page.

Good morning everyone, and firstly huge apologies for the many notifications you've been getting - that wasn't our intention at all and it seems something has gone awry with the feature. There should have been an opt-out box you could tick to stop receiving notifications, but for some reason it hasn't appeared. We are working on this as fast as we possibly can, and will be disabling the feature in the meantime (this isn't instant unfortunately, but it will be as soon as we can possibly make it this morning). Apologies again - we are working on it and hope to have it resolved very soon!!

I receive the daily newsletter but haven't had any other GN emails.....it must be something that we ticked or unticked when we first joined (so long ago I have no hope of remembering)

Nelliemoser Fri 26-Jan-18 08:01:34

FGS no like buttons. So far we have manged with grins or such .
These threads run at such a rate I certainly could not follow them all. I do have other things to do during the day, (even if I dont get round to it.)

I do get notifications for the Gardeners World forum. (You get better garden advice on The Gardeners World forum than on Gransnet.) wink
Grans do seem to post a lot more than gardeners.

I did not see that thread last night. I was too busy ranting on the WTF one.

I have just looked at that sweep button How long has that been there?

Nelliemoser Fri 26-Jan-18 07:37:50

I found a button popped up last night which allowed me to opt out of notifications. So far so good,

Why the heck did GNHQ not ask us if we wanted that before they messed it up.

"If it works don't fix it."

BlueBelle Fri 26-Jan-18 06:40:07

Bathsheba don’t worry I m not getting any either

FarNorth Fri 26-Jan-18 00:28:10

On Hotmail, you can use the Sweep button at the top of the page to do similar.
It's very easy to use.

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 25-Jan-18 23:52:51

Here's how to do it with Gmail -

Step 1: Click on the settings button on the right-hand corner of the page.

Step 2: Click on the Filters and blocked addresses tab.

Step 3: Click on "Create new filter" on the bottom of the page.

Step 4: In the next screen, in the Subject box type "Gransnet: New reply on thread" (without the quotes).

Step 5: Click on "Create filter with this search."

Step 6: Click on "Delete it."

Step 7: Click on "Create filter", and click on "Also apply filter to matching messages" to have Google sift through your inbox and delete the ones still there.

Voila! Annoying emails gone

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 25-Jan-18 23:31:50

If you're get lots of the emails, set up a rule to send them straight to the bin. It's easy to do.

NB Don't mark the messages as spam or you could end up never seeing another email of any kind. from GN ever again.

No doubt the problem will be fixed soon.

Ailsa43 Thu 25-Jan-18 23:26:23

I feel like I've been spammed to death by Gransnet...not happy!! I've turned off the automatic notifications, but I think that's not going to necessarily make it stop...

I'd like to post more on here that I do, but there's a lot of things that make me uneasy about this site, and Numero Uno, is the fact that posts can be read on Facebook without the express permission of the poster.

The fact that we have to jump through hoops to remain anonymous is just unacceptable on a forum in these modern times..it's archaic.. IMO

Chewbacca Thu 25-Jan-18 23:05:19

No landline FarNorth, but thanks anyway. I'll try to find out if my alarm will still go off if my mobile is switched off though. I hope this is all resolved by the time I get back from work tomorrow night. angry

FarNorth Thu 25-Jan-18 23:01:15

Your landline phone might have an alarm feature too.

FarNorth Thu 25-Jan-18 23:00:35

Chewbacca, I discovered my phone's alarm still works even if the phone's switched off.
Try it out before you go to bed.

I hope the large numbers of Gnetters who asked for this feature are happy, anyway

Chewbacca Thu 25-Jan-18 22:58:23

I'm going to have to switch my phone off tonight because the emails are coming in all the time. And that's really inconvenient because I use my phone as an alarm clock to get me up for work. Getting really fed up with this now.

Bathsheba Thu 25-Jan-18 22:58:05

Oh so that's my theory blown out of the water Maggiemaybe. Back to theory one then: I'm just a Billy no mates sad grin

annodomini Thu 25-Jan-18 22:47:42

Dozens of emails today. I delete them a batch at a time. But why have they suddenly descended on us?

Maggiemaybe Thu 25-Jan-18 22:45:56

Not yet, anyway!

NanaandGrampy Thu 25-Jan-18 22:45:30

At the risk of stating the obvious but when new functionality is added to a Web site , good practice would suggest it was rolled out on a ' mirror' site to some test addresses .

Therefore not impacting the main site . I wish I could understand GNHQ and how it all worked because then I could have bit more sympathy for how it all works .

Or doesn't.

Sometimes it feels a bit like a lab experiment and we're the hapless mice :-)

Maggiemaybe Thu 25-Jan-18 22:45:25

No, I’m getting the newsletters, Bathsheba, but not the flood of emails, thank goodness!

Bathsheba Thu 25-Jan-18 22:08:56

*these email notifications

Bathsheba Thu 25-Jan-18 22:08:00

Weird, isn't it BlueBelle? Seems there are a few of us who aren't getting the notifications - wonder why?

The only thing I can think of is that I opted out of getting the newsletter emailed to me. Have others who aren't getting this email notifications also opted out of the newsletter?

BlueBelle Thu 25-Jan-18 22:02:59

Yes I havent had any either Bathsheba

MawBroon Thu 25-Jan-18 21:56:56

SORT IT GNHQ!
