Suddenly, this morning, I have opened my email and found a few emails stating that someone has posted something on a thread I'm on .

Does anyone know how I can turn off these notifications ,they have the potential to totally clog up my inbox and I'm more than capable of tracking back threads I'm interested in to read new threads.

NanaandGrampy Thu 25-Jan-18 13:56:31

Actually its more than a few...I've just hit 25 ! Its infuriating argh.......

Cherrytree59 Thu 25-Jan-18 14:01:08

Iwould also be interested to know how to turn it off
It is completely unnecessary as there are watching and I'm on buttons at the bottom of the GN screenhmm

This is a feature on MN

NanaandGrampy Thu 25-Jan-18 14:04:49

Well its featuring highly on my hit list so far Cherry smile . Its totally unnecessary in my opinion.

We can't have a like button but we can have a zillion emails? ARGHHHHHHHHHH

Same problem.

Blame the owners. They want a bigger footfall, ergo more money.
Greedy beggars

LucyGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 25-Jan-18 14:55:18

Hello all! We've posted on this thread here as well: www.gransnet.com/forums/site_stuff/1244584-WTF

If you scroll to the bottom of one of the emails, you should be able to click one of two links in blue that allow you to stop the notifications, but we are working on having a button you can uncheck on your profile as well.

jollyg - this facility has been added at the request of a large number of gransnetters, rather than the 'owners'. No greedy beggars here I'm afraid wink

Greenfinch Thu 25-Jan-18 15:14:13

I have never had one of these notifications. Is it for the select few?

FarNorth Thu 25-Jan-18 15:21:42

Didn't a large number of Gransnetters request being able to change username?
How's it going with that one?

Bathsheba Thu 25-Jan-18 15:27:24

Well said FarNorth. And haven't a large number of Gransnetters repeatedly requested a like button? I haven't seen any requests on the forums for an email notification when someone adds to a thread I'm on. Or were all these requests made privately? hmm

LucyGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 25-Jan-18 15:59:14

Unfortunately we can't implement every request Bathsheba , but this particular function is one that Mumsnet has as well, so was easier to carry across.

Sorry to say that there are no plans to create a like button, but in terms of the username changes, we canvassed opinions from gransnetters - some were for and some were against. If you're concerned about anonymity, just drop us an email and we'll be happy to change your username for you. Similarly, if there's a particularly sensitive thread you'd like to post on anonymously, just get in touch with us and we can change your username as a one off, and then change it back for you once you've finished commenting on that particular thread.

durhamjen Thu 25-Jan-18 16:09:28

So who requested it and where?
Whoever it was will be regretting it now.

You can't change it off by going on preferences. That was just trying to fob us off.

FarNorth Thu 25-Jan-18 16:11:03

Around 80% were in favour of being able to change username.

Username change, at will, is one that Mumsnet has as well so should be easy to carry across.

Having to make special requests is not easy.

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 25-Jan-18 16:39:13

I subscribed by following the link at the bottom of the email - fingers crossed it works. smile

It's a real shame about the Like button though. It would be at the top of my list of changes. sad

NanaandGrampy Thu 25-Jan-18 16:41:15

Hi Lucy!!

Ive tried that on my laptop and one link lets me deselect threads I'm on - that would solve the problem but would also mean I count use the threads I'm on link on the site that IS useful.

The other link lets me change how I view the threads in terms of numbers displayed per page .

So , I couldn't see a way to say please stop sending lots of emails :-) of course I could stop posting and that would solve it smile

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 25-Jan-18 16:43:47

Lucy the Preferences page doesn't mention email notifications. confused

Cherrytree59 Thu 25-Jan-18 16:44:26

Agree FarNorth it was 80% plus last time I viewed that particular thread.

I also agree that it should be easy to carry across from MN.

Making a special request to HQ is not instantaneous.
If a GNers requires some advice or support and wishes/needs to remain anonymous the time delay may be an issue.

Marydoll Thu 25-Jan-18 16:46:22

I managed to stop the alerts (I think!) by going to the bottom of the email, to the part that says

Turn off these notifications?

Talk Preferences

and unsubscribe.

My inbox was full of alerts, it was driving me nuts.

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 25-Jan-18 16:49:55

Lucy a Like button is something discussed again just this week this thread

Gransnet makes me feel lonely

and I mentioned starting a thread as a petition to show how much support there is for a button. If we did that and it got a lot of support, would that help the owners rethink the idea?

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 25-Jan-18 16:51:35

I'm on Mumsnet and can't see a Like button. Where is it on a post?

NanaandGrampy Thu 25-Jan-18 16:51:46

OK - I am obviously dense - did as you said Marydoll and there are only 4 options

Reading direction:
Messages per page
Display bookmark links:
Automatically watch:

I can change any of those but nothing says unsubscribe?

I'm on my laptop - are you on a mobile device?

LucyGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 25-Jan-18 16:53:39

Sorry those of you who have pointed this out - you can only 'un-watch' threads automatically in those preferences! Apologies, that wasn't what we had in mind and we'll get this fixes ASAP. We'll keep you posted.

durhamjen Thu 25-Jan-18 16:54:33

No need for a like button. It's pretty obvious who likes who.

LucyGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 25-Jan-18 16:58:41

oops, fixed, I meant!

Bathsheba Thu 25-Jan-18 16:59:09

Well so far I have had no email notifications about threads I'm on confused. Anyone else unpopular like me? grin
