Hijacking of user name!!

(106 Posts)
Jane10 Sat 14-Apr-18 08:18:54

Please note everyone that the newly minted user name ladyjane10 is nothing to do with me and I have complained to GNHQ about what feels like a fairly deliberate hijacking of my user name.
I know others have had similar concerns.
As an afterthought, could it be the return of one of our recent defectors?

I just searched and came across a post from a good few years ago :-

But no 10!

seacliff Sat 14-Apr-18 17:15:06

No Jane, I agree it is very strange that someone else also chooses 10.

pollyperkins Sat 14-Apr-18 17:50:11

There are many similar names. There is a polly parrot I've noticed! When I joined I suggested various names and was told they were already taken so I had to have a long think. I didn't want a name that would easily identify me so settled for pollyperkins as it was a song I liked and had heard recently. No connection to my real name! But one reguar poster has a user name very similar to my real name which can be a bit confusing!

I agree theLadyJane10 thing is spooky , but I would tend to notice the Lady part more so wouldn't confuse it with Jane10! I found Anna and Anya more confusing when I first joined.

No chance of my username being autocorrected Craicon as when sending a message, the box above ‘message’ has my username already in place with correct spelling.

Nothing to do with being a member of a clique, simply my opinion of new member’s very coincidental choice of username which can cause confusion.

Waterloosunset Sat 14-Apr-18 18:38:25

I’ve been following GN for some time and have not seen this name come up. So hopefully ok. Let me know though if it’s similar to anyone out there and I will change it!

Marydoll Sat 14-Apr-18 19:25:00

Waterloosunset I like your choice of name.smile

ninny Sat 14-Apr-18 19:26:40

I think you are over thinking this you are JANE 10 and this new Lady is LadyJane10 so what this is only a grans forum she probably never even knew you existed you've not patented your name have you chill out.

Marydoll Sat 14-Apr-18 20:07:54

I can see where Jane is coming from.
Recently quite a few people have changed their usernames. I recently saw a posting by Grannybaggs and wondered if Baggs had changed her name, as I hadn't noticed any recent posts by her. So the same confusion could potentially arise between the two Jane10s.
Of all the infinite numbers available, why did Ladyjane10, specifically choose to add 10 to her name, as opposed to any other number?
I'm curious to know the answer, neither being mean, nor cliquey as one poster suggested, just wondering if Ladyjane10 was oblivious to Jane10's existence and there is no conspiracy in this.
As Jane10 is a prominent, prolific, frequent poster, it's quite hard not to notice her. winkgrin
Hopefully, it will soon be resolved Jane

Maggiemaybe Sat 14-Apr-18 20:10:35

I agree it’s odd when you spot a similar username and start wondering when you made that comment! I’ve seen a Maggiemay lately, a Maggymay and a Maggiemay69. I’ve no idea which of us was first. smile

Chewbacca Sat 14-Apr-18 20:17:26

Bit sharp there ninny. I don't think for one minute that Jane10 thinks she's patented her nic name but, when you've been a member of a group for a long time and someone suddenly appears with an almost identical nic name, it makes people go hmm.

Jalima1108 Sat 14-Apr-18 20:40:16

It is a bit odd and rather troubling if someone has totally different views hmm.

There is another poster with a very similar name to mine but I think she chose hers before me and she has never objected.

Will GN let you change unless it is for a very exceptional reason? I don't mean you, Jane10, I mean The Other One?

Jalima1108 Sat 14-Apr-18 20:41:18

It's the 10 which makes it seem rather strange.

Grannybags Sat 14-Apr-18 21:07:12

I've been a member for several years but don't post much. My Grannybags has only one g, unlike Baggs with two. The bags bit of my was part of a family nickname for me.

BlueBelle Sat 14-Apr-18 21:08:40

It’s spooky to choose the same number as well as the same name why not Janet10 or Jane2 I d bee spooked too Jane10
Have you tried asking her ?

Grannybags Sat 14-Apr-18 21:14:29

Btw I haven't changed my user name, I've always been Grannybags. When I first posted I got a "hello" from Bags, with one g who asked if we were related! That was ages ago

Marydoll Sat 14-Apr-18 21:31:49

Grannybags, please accept my sincere apologies. I must be losing the plot. I'm sure I saw a double gg.

Grannybags Sat 14-Apr-18 21:33:40

Accepted Marydoll! smile

Marydoll Sat 14-Apr-18 21:35:16

Thank you.? You are very kind.

Jane10 Sat 14-Apr-18 22:01:27

No response from Ladyjane10 hmm

Chewbacca Sat 14-Apr-18 22:04:09

Have you pm'd her Jane10 and had no response or via GNHQ?

Baggs Sun 15-Apr-18 07:08:44

The plot thickens!

Here's a possibility (remote but still... ?). Maybe the ladyjane who, seacliff discovered, posted in May 2011 (when Gransnet started) has deregistered and reregistered between sparse postings over the intervening years and is now up to ladyjane10.

Also maybe she hasn't got PM email notifications switched on.

absent Sun 15-Apr-18 07:12:31

I think it just happens. I started out as absentgrana which later became simply absent. Much later someone joined who used the name absentgrandma. So far, so good, but then people started shortening her name to absent when replying to her posts. As she and I tended to have diametrically opposed views on some subjects, this caused confusion, at least for me when seeing comments on her posts from other users addressing them to absent. As I say, I think these things just happen and there is no malice involved.

Baggs Sun 15-Apr-18 07:14:56

I agree.
