Lengthy 'cut and paste' - acceptable or not?

It would be helpful for GN to make a decision on copy/cut/paste. GN should make a clear decision about whether they are allowed, and put a maximum length.

Personally I think it is much better to post a link- with perhaps the most saillant point/s 'cut and pasted' up to a maximum word length. The recent pages and pages are totally unacceptable imho, from either side or anywhere in between. Thank you.

Thank you Jalima

FarNorth Fri 17-Aug-18 23:41:59

I'm astonished! It's actually worked.
Couldn't get it to do it before.

FarNorth Fri 17-Aug-18 23:41:09

testing

Jalima1108 Fri 17-Aug-18 22:40:08

FarNorth you can use these ^^^ to italicise - just don't leave any ^ spaces ^!

"As a new poster it is worth introducing yourself in a more personal way"

I didn't introduce myself at all and I don't see why anyone should, unless they want to.

FarNorth Fri 17-Aug-18 22:23:38

That gnhq message sounds harsh to anyone, new or not.
I've not been on GN today so don't know what's happened.

I have sometimes copy & pasted a lot of text because of a paywall. Indeed, at least once, it's been because someone asked what the text was as the link gave them nothing.

My tablet doesn't do italics, so I use "quote marks" if necessary.
Mumsnet uses bold for quotes and usually doesn't bold usernames. I quite like that way of doing it.

I think it was just unfortunate timing that the cut and paste thing came into force as iamnotarobot joined us.
The message from HQ sounded a bit harsh to a newcomer.
Correct me if it was something different.

jura2 Fri 17-Aug-18 21:50:05

Thank you, sorry.

jura2 Fri 17-Aug-18 21:49:01

Tank you BlueBelle. BTW where is the introduction thread?

BlueBelle Fri 17-Aug-18 21:43:39

It was on her thread about introductions

jura2 Fri 17-Aug-18 21:34:29

MB, where did you see that post from Iamnotarobot?

jura2 Fri 17-Aug-18 21:33:29

Riverwalk, I asked because

a/ I felt it was detrimental to discussion and debate recently

b/ I did not feel it was up to me or any poster to decide, but for GN.

Simple enough. Now I do not know why GN sent that message to Iamnotarobot- at all. And you can't blame me for it either, at all.

merlotgran Fri 17-Aug-18 21:23:43

It's awful. What on earth has got into them at HQ?

They'd better not come back and pat us on the head with the offer of cupcake

MawBroon Fri 17-Aug-18 21:19:06

This is the poster Jura2

Great welcome to GN hmm she has since said she is leaving. sad
Iamnotarobot Fri 17-Aug-18 16:57:25
The message from GN was
You can not copy and paste large chunks of text from one website to another. We will delete any of your posts that do.Weve suspended your account until we hear from you that you understand.
As a new poster it is worth introducing yourself in a more personal way

So that’s what I’ve done.

Riverwalk Fri 17-Aug-18 21:06:41

It would be helpful for GN to make a decision on copy/cut/paste. GN should make a clear decision about whether they are allowed, and put a maximum length.

Jura I earlier asked Lara why is cut & paste a problem but she didn't reply, so I'll ask you, as you started the thread and I'm genuinely perplexed, as to why a decision indeed a clear decision had to be made.

There's loads of rubbish on GN - what's so different about a bit of cut & paste? !! You didn't mention anything about the content so I assume it wasn't offensive/racist/personal in any way.

jura2 Fri 17-Aug-18 20:46:23

That is a shame indeed. Not sure who you mean - however, I am pretty sure she did not leave because I asked GN for clarification on lengthy 'cut and paste' posts.

Chewbacca Fri 17-Aug-18 20:34:11

I expect people will draw their own conclusions; but it's a great pity that a new member to the forum has felt so unwelcome, with all that's happened today, that's she's left GN.

jura2 Fri 17-Aug-18 20:28:47

Who makes you the arbitre or that lemongrove;) really?

I went through the proper channels and simply asked. Lara responded- as simple as that. No need for conspiracy theories, nastiness or personal attacks. No need, none at all, indeed.

lemongrove Fri 17-Aug-18 20:06:27

Why ask for ‘clarification’ at all?
But it’s done now and we will get only many, many links.
No need for it jura none at all.

jura2 Fri 17-Aug-18 20:04:25

It is still very appropriate for short cut and pastes, for the most saillant points, with a résumé, but not pages and pages- as has been the case recently. Simple enough- just re-read Lara's post.

What lies behind it all? Really?

jura2 Fri 17-Aug-18 20:01:42

Jane, I do not understand this eiher.

Chewbacca, to be clear, I have not reported any posts at all recently. As for being the arbitre- again, not at all. Au contraire- which is why I simply ask for clarification from GN, and for them to decide- and Lara did and I thanked her. simple - no need for heat or personal attacks. That clarification, as was made very clear, applies to all- from whatever 'side' or pov.

lemongrove Fri 17-Aug-18 20:00:17

Because it appears to be a new rule Jane and because of what lies behind it all.
Being able to copy and paste an article or part of one was interesting ( or not) and meant you didn’t have to leave the GN page to read it.

Jane10 Fri 17-Aug-18 19:56:04

Why are you arguing about this? I don't understand why things have become so heated.

lemongrove Fri 17-Aug-18 19:55:06

Durhamjen used to post thousands of links and didn’t need a rethink, there is no GN rule about it.I just didn’t read them.

Chewbacca Fri 17-Aug-18 19:54:41

Who made you the arbiter of who, what and how posts are made jura? I'm astonished that you've gone to the time and trouble to report the posts of a newcomer "to seek clarification "; why would you need to do that? If you didn't like to see long posts; read past them. If you didn't like the content of the post; ignore it and move on.

And your last post just takes the biscuit: And anyone tempted to post 1000s of links maybe should re-think, perhaps.

I don't know who you think you are but your post to maw troublemaking and have been noticed by so many, with great puzzlement applies to you too.
