Just received a notification of a private message from a name I did not recognise. When I opened It this was the text.

Hello there, I love your comments about making friends and IMO....
On the other hand, I will love to get to know you better and be friends, if that's okay by you I will be thrilled. A little about me; I'm a Danish American, dad was a Danish immigrant in the early '60s and mom is a Yankee.... I was born in California but grew up in Copenhagen retained the accent before moving back to Cali...
I'm a businessman, a contractor into the oil and gas business.. I have never been married, no kids have always been in tune with my career.....
Still searching for that special woman. How about you?

I am well aware this is a scouting operation for some relationship scam so I have blocked the sender, but I am pretty sure that others will have received it as well.

When I tried to report it to GN HQ, I discovered that there is no 'report' button on private messages. There should be, so that the person who sent the message can be reported and barred

M0nica Thu 27-Sept-18 09:03:59

GNHQ It would be much easier all round if there was a 'report this PM button within the PM system.

DH says the old age and treachery will always outmanoeuvre youth and enthusiasm. This thread is showing what a canny lot we are.

I think its block ALL messages from this person.

BlueBelle Thu 27-Sept-18 06:31:18

Apricity i don’t think you’re correct I used the block sender by his name I ve had a pm from another member since so don’t appear to have blocked everybody I hope not anyway
Carigransnet can you confirm this please

It won't be long before you are asked for money because his son has an almost terminal illness, he needs to put his mother into care, he has a wonderful once-off investment opportunity, he's going to fly to England to meet you but has a temporary cashflow problem… Of course, if you don't reply and get hooked – and gransnetters are much to wily for that – he'll move on to somewhere else. As my mother used to say, "It's no good growing old unless you become cunning".

Apricity Thu 27-Sept-18 04:13:37

Muffin, you're just not old enough! ?

Apricity Thu 27-Sept-18 02:50:29

SueDonim, it seemed to be that way when I tried. Happy to have help if anyone else has worked it out.

muffinthemoo Thu 27-Sept-18 02:00:14

I didn’t get one, I’m absolutely raging!

SueDonim Thu 27-Sept-18 01:44:38

Oh, is that so, Apricity? I assumed I was just blocking this one person.

Apricity Thu 27-Sept-18 01:11:30

Have just realised that the only 'message block' option on GN is to block ALL private messages. There is no option to block specific senders. People may wish to receive private messages from some people but to block others for a range of reasons but this is not possible.

Apricity Thu 27-Sept-18 01:04:22

Yes, I also received a much shorter message (clearly I'm not quite so interesting ?) but from the info provided by MOnica it is from the same person. First time this has happened on GN. Ignored message but thank you for the heads up MOnica.

Gransnet over to you to weed out this intruder.

annep Thu 27-Sept-18 00:38:21

Me too. I replied happily married. oh dear perhaps I shouldn't have answered. I didn't think of blocking ?. will do now.

SueDonim Thu 27-Sept-18 00:26:51

I had a similar message, too! Damn-it, I'll have to go and unpack my suitcase now. wink

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 26-Sept-18 22:48:56

Just a reminder that if you spot anything you think we should take a look at (such as this) just drop us a line at [email protected] and we can investigate

Melanieeastanglia Wed 26-Sept-18 22:05:37

No, I haven't received it either.

NanKate Wed 26-Sept-18 22:03:57

I got one too. I reported it to GNHQ and they said it was being dealt with.

It must be some poor loser somewhere with nothing better to do.

Eglantine21 Wed 26-Sept-18 21:22:31

Me neither. (Could it have beeen that rather potent curry I had for supper?)

lemongrove Wed 26-Sept-18 21:18:47

Damn! I didn’t get this ( goes off in a huff.) grin

MissAdventure Wed 26-Sept-18 20:59:09

I feel rather slighted.
I haven't got one.

BlueBelle Wed 26-Sept-18 20:23:31

He’s not very inventive our Tom he s sent the exact same message to all the ‘chosen few’ he could have made it a bit more personal
Think I ll put a complaint in

Jane10 Wed 26-Sept-18 20:18:06

The latest one is an orthopaedic surgeon. He's contacted lots of us Twitter ladies. You'd think they might spot the various tweets laughing at them. (Flashes devastating smile to GNers sobbing in the corner!)

Madgran77 Wed 26-Sept-18 19:53:21

I'm devastated at missing out!!! grin

M0nica Wed 26-Sept-18 19:33:13

Its funny how they think that the hook to get us in is to say they work in the oil and gas industry or are military.

However, growing up in an army family and with a husband working as an engineer in the oil and gas industry (more recently wind industry). I know just how ordinary awkward and inconvenient these jobs are. Now if he had said he was an accountant or a worked for a bank, he might have stood a chance. grin

gmelon Wed 26-Sept-18 19:15:53

I can smile...honest, it's lovely.grin
Pick me! Passport ready.
Alas I am not favoured as sadly I had no message.

Situpstraight1 Wed 26-Sept-18 19:10:38

Some of us have a lovely smile and some of us are sobbing..... next one in needs to bring their own chair.

Feelingmyage55 Wed 26-Sept-18 19:08:52

The corner is getting overcrowded. I'm in too.
