We are going to be improving the way you see ads on the site so there will be a few changes while we test what works best. The changes won't be visible to everyone at this stage so don't worry if you don't see any difference. For those of you who do notice the new version, it would be really helpful to us if you could let us know if the changes make it difficult for you to use Gransnet at all? If there are any issues (fingers crossed there won't be!) if you could take and send us a screenshot, that would be great. Hopefully it all run very smoothly but we did want to give you a heads up. smile

That's awful. Surely they can vet the ads better than that.

I just clicked on that thread Cherrytree and an ad came up offering a loan for just 59.9% APR!

Cherrytree59 Wed 23-Jan-19 18:30:59

There is a thread on GN regarding debt, if the spam Martin Lewis ad flashes up and a Gransnet inadvertently clicks on it, thinking it must be ok as its on GN, at the very least they could be attacked by a virus or much worse if the unsuspecting Gners enters financial details.

Gransnet.com should perhaps being taking a more responsible attude to protect Gransnetters from spam advertising

A couple of days ago I kept getting ones allegedly by Martin Lewis indorsing a financial scheme.
Purpledaffodil I saw Martin Lewis on the lunch-time news - he's very angry with FB etc for showing 'scam' adverts using his name and face. Apparently people have been taken in thinking they were genuine and have lost a lot of money thinking he endorsed these schemes.

He said that he never advertises.

How sure can you be, GNHQ, that this type of thing will not happen?

I now have a Ukraine ladies dating site in the middle of my page.
It's a bit more interesting than the plain green square which I keep getting Cherrytree!

Sometimes the ads appear, sometimes not, but no Ukrainian ladies as yet

I have never seen an advert on this site! Is it because family member set up an "Ad-blocker" on my Chromebook?

BlueBelle Wed 23-Jan-19 14:57:51

I don’t use any blocking app but my iPad seems totally free of these nuicences I m really curious why ? Perhaps someone technical can tell me
I wouldn’t like it if they were popping all over my screen but there’s nothing at all

CassieJ Wed 23-Jan-19 14:42:38

I use Ad blocker, have done for a long time. I hate to constantly having ads popping up. Ad blocker works really well. Just Google it, it is free

*is

Using my tablet this morning I have flickering advertisements at the top and bottom of my smallish screen. It's extremely distracting and annoying. I have no intention of opening them nor does it register who they are from. All they do are annoy me, so I spend less time on GN, which may well be a good thing. Why annoy those who use the site?

MissAdventure Wed 23-Jan-19 13:45:43

My ads are VERY personal.
I have used caravans coming up on Gumtree (been browsing there for jobs/babysitters)
Roman blinds (just bought one) and mattresses (just bought one of those, too).
It feels like I only have to think of something and up pops an ad.

jenpax Wed 23-Jan-19 13:44:24

GNHQ seem to ignore many responses eg no reply to the like/not like button idea and also why oh why is there not an edit feature (as there is on FB) for a comment that has been posted?? I try to check for glaring spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors but on my iPhone inevitably some escape the net!

Gonegirl Wed 23-Jan-19 13:09:21

Has anyone else had the ad from Cadbury's offering free chocolate? Loads of questions but I've completed them. Says I'm eligible for two boxes. ???

Purpledaffodil Wed 23-Jan-19 06:39:10

And another thing re adverts. A couple of days ago I kept getting ones allegedly by Martin Lewis indorsing a financial scheme. As he has very publicly said he doesn’t endorse things like that, these ads are at best misleading and at worst a scam. I do hope GN isn’t making money out of such things!
And I cannot stand the moving adverts either! ?

In future sort before launching.

Florabunda60 Tue 22-Jan-19 23:36:35

POGS
I fully agree site users should come first not advertisers. Besides Gransnet surely is run by staff not volunteers. It is THEIR responsibility to make sure site is easy for Gransnetters to use before launching any alterations. I am fed up of everywhere I go these days being expected to do the work of people who are employed and paid to what is THEIR work.

I have an Addblocker on, so don't know whether that helps. I haven't any adverts, but the number on top of the Addblocker says "9"!

Marydoll Tue 22-Jan-19 22:55:11

Tablet: irritating adverts in centre. Very off-putting.?

cornergran Tue 22-Jan-19 22:53:56

Advert in a square box at the top of the page comes and goes and the whole page jumps. This is using an iPad. iMac was ok earlier.

Marydoll Tue 22-Jan-19 22:48:43

Search facility is indeed working ? Thanks!

NotSpaghetti Tue 22-Jan-19 22:23:13

mcem Tue 22-Jan-19 22:22:25

Nannylovesshopping Tue 22-Jan-19 22:21:21

BlueBelle Tue 22-Jan-19 22:18:19

EllanVannin Tue 22-Jan-19 20:26:21

All the bloomin' adverts are running the battery down.
At least mine are at the side and not running down the centre.
