Is it really impossible to leave Gransnet offcially?

Are we trapped for ever and ever? I know it is simple not to log in and not to post- but I would prefer to have my account deleted- so I am not tempted to look in and comment. Surely it is against Human Rights to not be allowed to request to be deleted.

Baggs Tue 10-Mar-20 08:56:00

urmst and N&G, well yes ???

GracesGranMK3 Tue 10-Mar-20 08:57:58

I have left. Deleting in the way that GN offer. It is easy to do. I came back with the same name with numbers - no lack of identification, so no problem there. But I do understand what Jurassic is saying. I am thinking that I do not want to be part of the sleazy underworld that now seems to be Gransnet. I know no one, in real life, as vicious, destructive and self-important as far to many of those I have met on here and it seems to have got worse. But it seems to be like an addiction to something that is really bad for you. More and more opposing views are met with "don't post here then". I wish I didn't feel the need to show the world that all grannies aren't the same but I do.

Like an addiction the only thing is to take it day by day. When I left before I just got on with life but then, sometimes month's later, I would look. I suppose it's like the attraction of some sleazy underworld you don't normally have contact with. I am really sad at the moment, having lost my mother but I still want people to know we are not all loudly defending the worst of the older generation. That some of us don't just spout bile. We research, think, reflect and ask questions. We appreciate difference, laud the intelligent and knowledgeable and most of all the peacemaker not those wanting to make enemies of anyone with a difference of opinion, culture or skin colour.

It's a conundrum but there must be a way.

GracesGranMK3 Tue 10-Mar-20 09:01:02

Sorry Jura. My kindle will change people's names.

Anniebach Tue 10-Mar-20 09:03:12

But even the most noble have posts removed so no one is
perfect.

Baggs Tue 10-Mar-20 09:04:46

I don't think GN has got worse. I've been here since the beginning. The sleaze and intolerance can be avoided, just as it can on any social media.

Elegran Tue 10-Mar-20 09:20:42

The only difference is that more new members join daily, and the volume of posting increases. There are certainly more individual threads than there were at first, so the "anti" pin the mix is the same as it always was. There are more "good" and interesting posters than there used to be, too.

You just have to be selective and not assume that you have to read every comment and agree/disagree with every opinion. If you listen to half a dozen conversations on the bus, do you join them all?

annsixty Tue 10-Mar-20 09:22:21

I really don’t know what I think about being a member of some sleazy world which normal decent folk don’t want to have contact with.
I do assume there that GGmK3 is talking about the whole of GN.
It could be quite exciting and different, I think I will stay.

Elegran Tue 10-Mar-20 09:24:32

What happens to perfectly good posts between typing and posting? Somehow it deleted half a phrase, which should have read "the "anti" proportion in the mix"

Anniebach Tue 10-Mar-20 09:24:48

I don’t understand why, if someone doesn’t like a place they
leave but want to go back, why return to a place you don’t like

Galaxy Tue 10-Mar-20 09:27:30

Why has no one told me about all this sleaze? I don't want to miss out.

Callistemon Tue 10-Mar-20 09:27:58

annsixty grin

Elegran I don't know, sometimes I think that I have written a perfectly sensible post (well, sensible to me, others could interpret it differently), press post and find it is gobbledegook.

GracesGranMK3 Tue 10-Mar-20 09:28:59

I don't think, as your post infers Annie, that I am noble. I do think that it is as much an addiction for others as it is for me. Where else can you go on for hours tearing someone apart? The very fact that people come on here to do it hour after hour, with nastiness building on nastiness tell us friends would not tolerate it for very long before changing the subject. At work it would be seen as unprofessional. No the addiction to voicing an "opinion no facts required" is stronger, I think, than wanting people to be moderate when commenting on other people and other views. And the "I have a right to my opinion" that descend into "I have a right to insult you" to personal attacks get removed too Annie. But those addicts are still enjoying their highs and see no consequences from their addiction.

Callistemon Tue 10-Mar-20 09:30:32

Oh dear, someone started this thread asking for help and it has become an argument.

tinaf1 Tue 10-Mar-20 09:38:41

I think I have to agree with Callistemon, it has all turned a bit heated, it’s a shame that Jura made her request a bit more dramatic than it needed to be, hopefully she has the information she needs now.

SadafGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 10-Mar-20 09:39:43

Hi all, just a reminder to keep this thread helpful. We're always sorry to lose one of our members, but if you do want to leave then you can do so by following this link:

Callistemon Tue 10-Mar-20 09:42:49

tina I think that jura wanted to know how to be permanently "excluded" so to speak, that she wouldn't be tempted to rejoin.

I don't think there would be a way, only willpower.

Perhaps SadafGransnet might know?

Ilovecheese Tue 10-Mar-20 09:52:25

I have not been posting much recently. I feel like Gracesgran, that I don't want to be part of a grouping that spills such sour vicious bile against a woman no one has met, for hour after hour.
There are posters that I enjoy engaging with, but they seem to have been shouted down for voicing a different opinion.
I keep hoping though, that things will improve and don't see why I should be driven away because I can't agree with the Meghan Markle bashing threads, which now apparently include bashing any signs of physical affection.

tinaf1 Tue 10-Mar-20 09:52:46

I agree Callistemon, but I think the Human Rights aspect of her request made it more drama than it needed to be , hopefully she has followed the advice from the information she has been given and then it’s up to her

GracesGranMK3 Tue 10-Mar-20 09:59:25

Jura does have a point. It's not as if all our posts go as they belong to GN - the publisher.

Callistemon Tue 10-Mar-20 10:00:16

It's easy to avoid a thread which you don't like though.
There are lots of other threads and, if none are to your taste, then you could start one.

Callistemon Tue 10-Mar-20 10:02:37

Yes, I see that GGMK3
Someone upthread thought they had been 'tracked,' but all those old posts would remain.
They may be on Twitter, FB, in the media and are often used by an Australian publication I now realise.
We do not own our posts.

MawB Tue 10-Mar-20 10:13:20

But I do understand what Jurassic is saying

Oops GGmk3???
Post in haste, repent at leisure? ???

MawB Tue 10-Mar-20 10:14:39

PS I know you apologised but once seen, hard to unsee.

Shelmiss Tue 10-Mar-20 10:21:44

NanaandGrampy Oh I do love a good ‘flounce’ ! ?

Me too, I wish there was a like button for this grin

Chewbacca Tue 10-Mar-20 10:24:58

Elegran's post @ 09.20 sums it up for me. There are so many threads, covering lots of topics and so it shouldn't be too difficult to find something that suits us. When I first joined GN, several years ago now, the News & Politics threads were far more vitriolic and aggressive that they seem to be now. They were very much dominated by a couple of posters who brooked no difference of opinion or perspective but there seems, to me at least, to be a broader spectrum of opinions there now than their used to be.
I firmly believe that there are far more helpful and supportive GNetters than not.
