Hello, GNHQ here, (waving a white flag).

We need your help. As many of you have probably noticed the conversations over the past few days have been increasingly tense. The questions posed have been so interesting and worthy of debate but so often the conversations have derailed and turned into personal attacks (the veiled ones can be particularly unkind). We hate deleting threads when people have taken time and effort to contribute and it must be equally wearing for you all to wade through mean-spirited posts. We'd really like to get back to conversations that include debate/disagreement but that also show a bit of respect and consideration for other posters even if you disagree with them.
Thank you for reading. smile

Interestingly, everytime I make a comment about Trump it gets deleted, while anyone can say anything they like about Meghan Markle. Why are GNHQ scared of Trump? Has he got a blanket ban on social media comments, threatening legal action?

I wonder if they'll delete THIS comment?

Elegran Fri 10-Jul-20 13:19:00

I agree with you, Growstuff Unless a post is likely to land GN or the poster in trouble with legalities, it is better to let it stand, with some addition by GN that it breaks their guidelines, so that the aggression of the poster is revealed . If they can't do that, then perhaps they could somehow mark any quote of the offending words with a reminder that repeating an insult only perpetuates it in everyone's memory.

Oh, dear.
This is going well, isn't it.

If someone says "You've got it all wrong" to me, then fair enough.
If they say "You're a raving lunatic" that's not so good, but I just wonder if they were talking to themselves on that occasion.

growstuff I have replied to JaneAinsworth's post and refer you to it. I assumed the GNHQ were deleting a quote from the deleted post. That is what used to happen previously, but I should have assumed nothing.

I would hope that GN would look carefully at possible trolling and judge whether it is that or not, and also judge reported posts each on their own merits, not in an arbitrary wa, based on the inclusion of a list of buzzwords. They are not the only site to apply blind judgments - the other day I mentioned the dreadful word ess ee ex somewhere and got my fingers rapped!

From what I remember, I did quote a deleted post, which presumably is why my (and other) posts were deleted. OK! So those are the rules. I should have been more careful.

What has aggrieved me slightly is that people can see that I have had a post deleted and assumed (wrongly) that it was "nasty", when it wasn't. I'm glad it's sorted now.

I hope I haven't broken any rules by referring to the deletion, but I did feel that it needed clearing up.

I haven't seen that, Jane Was it on the forum or in a PM?

Jane10 Fri 10-Jul-20 12:58:53

I've just been threatened to be reported to GNHQ. Sigh. I won't be be bludgeoned into agreeing with posters that disagree with points I wish, and am entitled, to make. Judging by the sympathetic PMs I'm not alone but others are afraid to agree on the forum for fear of being jumped on.

Elegran Fri 10-Jul-20 12:58:06

GaagJo I pinched it from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

I think you should write all our insults Elegran. That hamster one is hilarious.

Elegran Fri 10-Jul-20 12:49:58

JaneAinsworth I missed your deleted post (all of the deleted ones on this thread, actually) and I made the assumption that, except for the direct attacks, they quoted a bit of the attacking posts while making their point that that they were personal.

I have seen that on many controversial threads - someone says something like "How dare you post that my mother was a hamster and my father smelt of elderberries!' and that gets deleted as well os the original insult. I should have assumed nothing but in my defence, I didn't think that GNHQ would have deleted something that only commented that the attacker was wrong in believing she had been trolled! Mere mention of the EXISTENCE of trolls and the unlikelihood of a specific inceident being evidence of one is noe a hanging offence!

FarNorth Fri 10-Jul-20 12:45:15

Aldom, I know what you mean about not wanting to be jumped on while you are feeling fragile.
Have you tried Soop's Kitchen, or the Good Morning & Good Evening threads if you just fancy a chat?
There is a 'Bereavement' section of the forum, which might be helpful to you.

FarNorth Fri 10-Jul-20 12:39:39

Message deleted by Gransnet as it contains a previously deleted post.

This from a post on this thread, meaning that the quote function had been used and so the offensive post was repeated.
So GN does seem to be prepared to give that reason.

(I've noticed, tho, that if you just write out a nasty comment in order to reply to it, then it doesn't get deleted when the original one does.)

sodapop Fri 10-Jul-20 12:39:22

I'm so sorry to hear about the death of your son Aldom you have my sympathy thanks

You will find there are a lot of kind and supportive posters on here so don't be afraid to chat.

I too agree I have been increasingly disappointed at some of the real nastiness and have felt sometimes that I would give up the site. Also the reason I do not post often.

Callistemon Fri 10-Jul-20 12:27:29

I did notice one new name EllanVannin but then the thread has been wiped and we have all been put in detention.

EllanVannin Fri 10-Jul-20 12:26:20

I could then have jumped in and reported it but as it happens I've never pressed the report button yet. Instead, I was wiped out grin Sod's law.

Callistemon Fri 10-Jul-20 12:24:14

Oops, I used the word ironic

Callistemon Fri 10-Jul-20 12:24:00

It's ironic that we're the shrinking little flowers who must be protected but who managed to bring up the robust, outspoken, anything goes Mumsnetters!

EllanVannin

I also have a suspicious mind as well and knew that two " strange " posters were both having a go. They haven't appeared since, both posted inflammatory posts with an aim to disrupt.

Yes I was chuntering away in my usual long winded fashion and then bang!

It makes me breathless.

EllanVannin Fri 10-Jul-20 12:23:23

Not only that, I foolishly stated what my middle name was last week, but in innocence, and one of the posters had used the same name. Coincidence ? I don't think so.

Summerlove Fri 10-Jul-20 12:22:06

I had someone follow me across two separate threads, jumping on innocuous remarks four times in half an hour in a sneaky underhand way. Clearly trying to goad me into an angry response. It’s not the first time this person has done this.

In light of this thread I reported all four incidents. None of them in themselves were delectable, I concur, but sometimes GNHQ need to look beyond their ‘guidelines’ and actually try to understand what is really happening.

I find I used to get that often. It’s always in full passive aggressive so could be claimed that I “misunderstood”. Apparently that’s the only way to say anything some days here. Calling it out gets your comments deleted for being “mean”

Whitewavemark2 Fri 10-Jul-20 12:20:42

EllanVannin

Whitewavemark2 , it's a way of posting that you sense an undercurrent from the poster but written in such a way that only the recipient of that post can pick up on if it's a " face to face " discussion. It's a crafty way of writing so as not to make it obvious that a poster is actually verbally abusing ( veiled )

Daft me---I've always been outspoken and wrap nothing up which is why I can come across quite blunt. But that's me. smile

That’s exactly what I thought.

It is just that some people don’t appear to have got the message yet.

It is unpleasant and nasty.

Blunt is good! At least we can be blunt back?
