Hello, GNHQ here, (waving a white flag).

We need your help. As many of you have probably noticed the conversations over the past few days have been increasingly tense. The questions posed have been so interesting and worthy of debate but so often the conversations have derailed and turned into personal attacks (the veiled ones can be particularly unkind). We hate deleting threads when people have taken time and effort to contribute and it must be equally wearing for you all to wade through mean-spirited posts. We'd really like to get back to conversations that include debate/disagreement but that also show a bit of respect and consideration for other posters even if you disagree with them.
Thank you for reading. smile

MawB Whitewave has apparently had a message from GGumpteenth to say that she has been banned.
Careful MawB my comment was deleted when all I said was 'the irony'.
I have also demonstrated that wading in without the facts is wrong, as I have done this afternoon, and have caused more distress to Lemongrove.

GNHQ I really think this deleting threads all the time should stop. It's ridiculous, annoying and unnecessary. As others have said, let the posts stand, so all can see the culprits. (It's OK we can take it) .

By all means give the instigator (s) a warning. If they persist, remove them for a week or two, and announce it on the thread. Why can't you do that? At least have a trial of it please.

My first time using the quote function, as I think this is a good post, worth drawing attention to. smile

galaxy you are probably right, they could never admit they were in the wrong???

But is shows strength of feeling about an issue which appears at face value unjust.

We are only getting one side of the issue.

I think too that it says a little about how GNHQ have conducted the policing of threads lately as well.

As I have previously posted.

They are not covering themselves in glory lately.

MawB Wed 08-Jul-20 16:16:48

Gosh this thread has itself turned toxic.
Do you have any evidence that GGumpteenth has been banned? Has she told anyone she has been given a warning?
So a petition is being raised - is it considered OK. if somebody continues to personally have a go at somebody else regardless of the thread title? (As seems to be happening here)
I was not aware that it was started as an area for discussion but the irony of deleted posts on a thread dedicated to mutual respect and toleration can have escaped nobody.

lemongrove Wed 08-Jul-20 16:15:25

Peardrop ?thank you.
Yes, I am more than capable of fighting my corner....but that’s for debates/ arguments on politics or news usually.
When faced with a barrage of personal remarks I allow GNHQ to sort it out, because, if I retaliate on here then it does descend into a spat.....on the very thread where we are being asked to be more understanding of others.

For previous experience of MN trying to get a poster reinstated is pointless.

Yes: I agree that she should be reinstated.

Peardrop50 Wed 08-Jul-20 15:59:56

Lemongrove If you had been on the receiving end today of so very many personal remarks from one poster, you may feel differently.
I was the only one targeted by the poster in her many posts.
We can disagree.....in a civil way.

I am so sorry Lemongrove, I didn't see any of todays posts as I stayed in bed with my lunch to watch Rishi Sunak. I hadn't realised that the onslaught had continued but I stand by my commitment to free speech, I'm sure we're all capable of seeing who the nasty people are if the posts are left intact. I know that you are a good and reasonable person and don't deserve many of the comments directed at you by the few but I also know that you are an intelligent person quite capable of fighting your own corner and when you have had enough there are many of us who have your back.
I hope that GGumpteenth is brought back and that he/she is big enough to offer you an apology.

FlyingHandbag Wed 08-Jul-20 15:57:45

Marydoll

Not everyone, Flying handbag.
You are correct in that times are difficult and we should be kind to each other. Posters should be able to debate without resorting to vitriol, but unfortunately some posters seem to be unable to do this. ☹️

I haven't noticed you posting much, so I hope you are ok.

Hi Marydoll! I'm fine thanks, I haven't been on much as I have been on the FaceTime with relatives and I have had some socially distanced visits from relatives. Hope you're well too. X

WhitewaveMk2 I have just gone back to when GGumpteenth had her first post deleted there were no contentious posts ahead of her deleted one.

Why is it that when some GNs suggest it should be possible to have a debate without resorting to insults others assume this will lead to GN becoming "bland".

I have had some very stimulating and heated conversations/disagreements without recourse to insults by either person.

lemon oh dear we will have to disagree over this.

You can’t expect sweetness and light on every thread except the politics thread . Blimey we aren’t Stepford Wives!!

Yes, we will have to disagree, and I did say it didn’t have to be sweetness and light.

I do not want to see anyone banned unless it is over something which could be libellous and therefor damage GN.

GG13 apologies, it was GGumteenth that I locked horns with last night. She/he who was going to press the report button for my post.

Thank you EllanVannin I have been worrying that I had lost one or more of my few remaining marbles

Name added - and thank you Peardrop, especially as I know you and GGumpteenth don't always see eye to eye.

lemongrove Wed 08-Jul-20 15:34:15

....and I think it is a shame Whitewave for anyone to keep on questioning this matter.Natasha Gransnet does not say that disagreements are never one sided but are often not.

To try and get things back on track... I think any heated debates should be relegated to News and Politics, but apparently harmless threads ( as this was supposed to be) should be the domain of kinder posts.
They don’t have to be ‘bland’ or ‘all sweetness and light’ .....just respectful with no attacks.

Yes I agree. But at the same time I would like a way of highlighting personal remarks a sort of name and shame. No argument just a hint that the remark was personal.

I had a post zapped today because in my irritation I made a personal remark to lemon. It was zapped. Much more effective if it was highlighted. I would almost certainly apologised, which I would have thought would have achieved a better result.

I agree Whitewavemark2 probably for the first and last time, but that's what it's all about.
I would like to start a petition to reinstate GGumpteenth and ask GNHQ to refrain from deleting posts, it's a free country.
Perhaps they could find a way of highlighting posts that have received complaints so that everyone can make their own judgement and the poster be made aware that they're attracting disapproval.

seacliff Wed 08-Jul-20 15:22:20

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Jul-20 15:15:36

Then why if the disagreements are never one sided do people get banned?

I can understand say extreme racism etc, but not what seems to have happened on this thread which is unfortunate to say the least.

The decision has left you open to the accusation of favouritism, which undermines your authority imo.

Undoubtedly you largely rely on reports, but this imo takes time, and that certainly didn’t happen today. You seemed to be on automatic pilot.

The trouble with the reliance on receiving reports is that some posters will whizz off reports quite happily and consistently whilst others prefer to let things slide. I think that is what leaves you open then to the accusation of favouritism.

The trouble is you can’t enter into dialogue and I think it is a shame when you have started a thread like this and it has ended as it has with lots of open ends and no questions answered
