Troll hunting and thread deletions

Hello
We wanted to clear a few things up:
1) We don't allow troll hunting on the forums. If you are worried someone may not be genuine, please email us directly or report any concerning posts to us. We will deal with it. Making accusations on the forums is not helpful and could, if incorrect, lead to possibly vulnerable people feeling victimised. We will have to delete threads that accuse other users of being trolls.
2) PMs. We take a very dim view of this being abused. If you receive an unwanted or unkind PM please report it to us. We can take a look and deal with it. You are also able to block other users so that they are no longer able to PM you. Please use this. And apologies in advance if this does happen to you. It's not nice and not what Gransnet is about at all.
3) Despite what it feels like tonight hmm we do not enjoy deleting threads. We have a handful of guidelines, all there with the purpose of making the threads better, and more welcoming for users. We are doing our best and rely on you to report things to us that seem concerning, so thank you for caring so much about the site and reporting anything that looks suspicious.

Thank you
GNHQ

By the way Lucca I would say "ooh I don't know what's been going on" because I don't that is why I asked.

phoenix Wed 19-Aug-20 14:35:51

Ok, 2 verses of Elton John singing "I'm still standing" followed by a group chorus of Gloria Gaynor's "I will survive"!

Now, who's conducting?

Lucca Wed 19-Aug-20 14:36:57

Which is why I’ve tried to explain without getting myself into trouble!

Iam64 Wed 19-Aug-20 14:37:01

You are phoenix - obvs xx

Lucca Wed 19-Aug-20 14:37:30

That post was for 3nanny6

Lucca Wed 19-Aug-20 14:38:56

You’re so vain...bet you think his thread is about you, don’t you?? ?

Katek Wed 19-Aug-20 14:43:25

May be better to just stay that way! smile

phoenix Wed 19-Aug-20 14:46:54

Sooty Lucca, I cant. My tuxedo is at the cleaners and I've been able to do bow ties.grin

3nanny6 Wed 19-Aug-20 14:48:21

Are you winding me up or what or do you think I am a fool, can't you answer in plain English?

fevertree Wed 19-Aug-20 14:49:27

There once was a Gransnetter who flounced
Without even one backward glance
And then it transpired
Her plan had backfired
Because no one gave an ounce...

Kalu Wed 19-Aug-20 14:50:02

So, the sac à main hasn’t flown off yet!

phoenix Wed 19-Aug-20 14:50:23

SOOTY? Where on earth did that come from?

Don't tell me it's a subtle invasion by puppets!

' I am of the opinion too that the reprimand should also be a public one, so that the author of the abuse is named and shamed. Deleting it gets rid of it, but it also removes the evidence so that other posters can't see just what was nasty enough to deserve reporting.'
-

Over the years this sort of problem crops up every now and again and I always refer to the fact that deletetions of posts/threads by GNHQ without proper explanation has a causation.

1) Usually creates more of an issue.

2) Can be viewed as aiding and abetting the wrong doer by the mere fact their words/deeds/actions are no longer available for others to digest and come to their own conclusion. They get away with it for a short period of time.

GNHQ

I have now gathered what went on and over years I have requested at times like this you develop a better response as to why posts / threads have been removed.
Could you expand on the ' Breaking Forum Guidelines' a tad maybe?

I have another issue that I have raised before many times. A poster reports another poster and you delete their post but the person doing the reporting continues to have their posts in situ. They are often posts that are far worse left on a thread by the poster complaining, but because the other poster is not a trigger happy 'reporter' it appears to all and sundry they must have done/said something very obnoxious / so bad it had to be removed.

Now I don't report posts as a rule as I feel adult enough to respond to criticism or personal abuse but I understand other posters may not be so hardy. I then understand the need to get involved on their behalf.

However my opinion is most of the time those who are dishing it out cannot take it back and resort to 'reporting' posters who challenge them willy nilly safe in the knowledge they can go to GNHQ and get their dirty work done for them. They get deletions for those oppose/debate/argue them whilst their posts stand. Hence I call it 'aiding and abetting' and it happens because a lot of posters do not /will not go down the path of 'reporting' posts but prefer to answer their adversaries with their own words and for others to make their own conclusions.

It is a tricky situation for GNHQ but please can you expand case by case on the reason as to why you have deleted a post and when deleting a thread please leave the thread title on ' ACTIVE' but delete all posts thus leaving posters who have taken the ruddy time to engage in it to stop wondering where the hell it has gone.

Thank you, rant over.

The only way to stop all this nonsense is for GN to be more robust and consistent in its approach. That doesn't seem to be happening. Perhaps it's because it generates lots of traffic... or am I just a cynical old fool? It damages the integrity of GN, people become afraid to post and GN just becomes a bland and uninteresting site. sad

Why is this thread being allowed to descend into a slanging match, without any intervention, after GN were very quick to reprimand posters on yesterday's deleted thread for being unkind? Does it depend who is on duty. I'm totally baffled.

Marydoll Wed 19-Aug-20 14:58:08

Crossed posts POGS. Excellent post from you.

More like Lambchop than sooty and sweep then merlotgran wink?

Sooty has flounced phoenix . He objected to being compared to a sock. grin

Previously didn't deleted threads continue to appear for quite a while on the"Active" list, or maybe it was the "Last Hour" or "Last Day" ones? They were labelled "Thead deleted" but they didn't vanish oinstantly, as they seem yo now. You didn't search for them unsuccessfully and wonder whather you had imagined their existence.

Elegran Wed 19-Aug-20 15:09:50

Marydoll Part of the problem is that Gransnet is half-moderated.

If it were totally moderated by admin, it might get a bit biassed toward whatever admin's standards were, but it would be consistently biassed and predictable.

If it were not moderated at all, it would mean that there wouldn't be any reported and deleted posts, but people would say what they meant and stick up for themselves, and would settle into a level of some kind.

Being half and half means that the level of "discipline" depends partly on what different people choose to report and partly on who is on duty to make the judgment. That makes it very uneven and unfair.

POGS Wed 19-Aug-20 15:11:30

Elegran.

Meant to add in my posts quoting you ' good post' to your comment by the way. ?.

I have a vague recollection that may have once been the case so perhaps GNHQ will read our posts and respond to such a simple but possibly effective answer to the tedium of asking where is such a such thread.

trisher Wed 19-Aug-20 15:18:40

All I know is that I have started threads had what seemed to be a perfectly civil discussion, gone to bed, and next morning found an e-mail telling me the thread has been deleted because it mentioned other threads and there were some abusive posts-too many to deal with apparently! I wouldn't care but I never seem to get to see the abusive posts. Personally I think it's the bloody elves posting and the GN fairies getting upset about it.

Nortsat Wed 19-Aug-20 15:23:32

Lucca

Nortsat. By the way when you said some people must spend a lot of time on gransnet . Was that possibly a little “sneery “ ? At various times in life people can be lonely bored sad and not have much else to do ? Just saying

I did not say that, you are mistaken Lucca.
I would not join with or exacerbate unpleasantness. Neither would I be ‘sneery’.

geekesse Wed 19-Aug-20 15:33:00

Can I just give a shout out to GNHQ? Moderating an online community is a tedious and thankless task - I know because I did it for several years (not GN). Whatever you do, some people will think moderation is being applied too heavily, and others will complain that it’s not moderated enough.

GNHQ do a great job, moderating with a light hand and responsively. They’ll never please all of the posters all of the time, but I for one am grateful that GN works as well as it does.

Chewbacca Wed 19-Aug-20 15:36:23

Agree with you Marydoll, consistency is key.

phoenix Wed 19-Aug-20 15:43:10

I think Norstat was quoting a post made by Orangerose, the "By the way when you said some people must spend a lot of time" etc, and adding her response, the "Was that possibly a little "sneery"? At various times etc" part, but might be wrong?

Elegran Wed 19-Aug-20 15:45:48

geekesse Doing anything that involves a degree of control over what people do, say, etc. is a thankless task. Organising an activity that others join in with is as bad. Whatever you do is wrong for half of them, and if that half are happy, the other half complain, but getting either half to take on an active role in planning or admin is like drawing teeth.
