But if you mean a moderator sitting at a computer in an office 24/7, forgoing holidays and separated from their family, which is the Dickensian picture you seem to be trying to paint, that is hardly necessary.

As for adverts, no one has said Gransnet should be ad-free. I think most of us accept that the adverts pay for the site.

So, some it would seem do not wish to see advertising on the site. Also, no one has spoken of Dickensian working conditions as the normal three or four employee shift system worked in so many companies would suffice with perhaps job share incorporated into that.

However, I still believe that GN would not be able to engage in that expense simply by judging the empty advertising placements on the site.

Perhaps RW would like the whole postal service to be closed down, as I believe that some people use that to write letters to close friends and pass on information and opinions. General email providers too, because being able to send messages that are not displayed in public could let the senders tell things about acquaintances to third parties.

If a twenty four hour, three hundred and sixty five day a year fully moderated forum without advertising is the wish then that I believe would have to be financed by membership subscription.

That would be fair enough for me and doubtless many others, but it could well mean the exclusion on a cost basis of many who need the company of this forum the most?????

I am in two minds as whether that whole Covid related thread should be taken down Marydoll despite myself and others posting that there is no supporting evidence to the OP there are a lot of scared Grans still posting on it.

Agreed Marydoll. If we had no moderation then all the posts spreading fake news from Covid deniers could do a lot of harm. I also do not want a forum filled with advertising, be it for products or “services”
I am glad I didn’t see the unpleasant posts you mention.

When I started this yesterday, some posters thought I was making a fuss about nothing. Eventually the reported posts were removed after twenty four hours, which was unacceptable.

Last night we had the vilest post I have ever seen on GN, which left a poster distraught and many of us thoroughly shocked. It was reported by numerous posters, but was still there for ages, with the perpetrator continuing to mock.
It took an email for action to be taken.

Overnight we have had three spam posts from a lady offering her services.

I think this reinforces the points I was making.i.e
1. Safeguarding: a poster living alone, having to deal with the consequences on her emotional and mental wellbeing of such a vile statement.
2. Knowing there is probably no-one monitoring, people take will advantage to get away with things.

I understand that a company may have staffing issues, due to staff illness and cost, but whatever the cost, despite it being a bank holiday, a forum like GN needs a moderator on duty, even if only checking in now and again from MN.

The only excuse would be technical issues, where there are problems with the system. However, it would be simple enough to post a message saying so.

I suppose technically, this is a thread about a thread (s) so I'm expecting it to be deleted.....eventually. I just wanted to say my piece.
