Deleting one post that breaks the guidelines is a bit different from dealing with a targeted attack on several fronts aimed at getting a response from the members of an internet forum. Which is just what they've got, isn't it?

If there are lots of complaints about how the site is being handled, and there are problems with getting funding for the site, what do you think could happen?

Just ignore then, honestly, let GNHQ get on with it.

If someone barged in and interrupted a meal out or a family event shouting the stuff that appeared recently, would you throw them out and ban them returning, or welcome them in, and let them back in for the next event??

Either you agree with posts being pulled or you dont. It cant just be applicable to certain posters.

If someone posts nothing else but crude and irrelevant "comments" meant only to shock and disgust, then a gentle reminder of the guidelines won't make them suddenly become all sweetness and light and actually joining in discussions. In my opinion they are better ejected summarily, and the faster the better.

I just want to apologise anyway, I didn't mean to upset anyone but I obviously have. Can I just make a suggestion though? A lot of us are going through a really difficult time at the moment and sometimes things can be taken out of context and no hurt was meant at all. I should never have referred to you as 'you pair' that was really uncalled for and unnecessary but I am upset by pornographic references in general aimed at women though and I think it pushed my buttons. I don't like being told to be quiet either (another one of failings? who knows) but the last thing I want to do is to cause upset to people and I'm sorry for that.

If this thread proves anything it's that communication on here is so very, very difficult.

I really don't want anyone to be upset; and I don't want anyone to apportion any blame to anyone else or even themself.

The vast majority of ill feeling on GN is caused solely by the limitations of the mode of communication.
(If I could have that sentence in bold, underlined and highlighted in florescent pink I would.)

It’s strange, isn’t it that HQ can’t get rid of some spotty scroat offending ‘some’ posters but can react quickly and pull a thread and ban a member ( MawBroon) for posting an innocent post.
Don’t bother to explain HQ, most of us know how it works.

The annoying thing is Fanny I was totally agreeing with you It didn’t matter how bad the troll posts were, it didn’t matter that I hadn’t read them I was supporting you, as I hate that sort of things and was trying to think of ways to stop it until HQ could go about their business

I have no idea what being careful about what I say means lady, and the issue is it will mean different things to different people. The point I was making is I have seen lots of posts saying we are grown ups and people shouldn't report comments that offend them they should just skip past them. This is why that strategy doesnt work.

In a way, the trolls have achieved what they set out to do, get attention.
However, some people on this thread are upset because their comments have been misconstrued. The dangers of posting anonymously and and facial expressions not being seen. We are not all robust and able to ignore comments directed at us.

nanna8, no offense intended, but I'm not sure who your comment is directed to, which sums up what I am trying to say.

As Fanny has said, reports are not always acted on for hours and in some cases, days. That is not acceptable.

Some people just like argument for its own sake. Boring.

I'm so sorry that it's ended up with everyone falling out.

BlueBelle I'm very sorry that you have got so upset. It seems to have stemmed from my 'the drift' comment.
I'll explain why I said it.

You admitted that you hadn't read the troll posts.
Therefore I don't think that you do realise how vile and offensive they were; because even by troll standards they were exceptionally gross.
One would have had to have read them to understand that.

I still believe my comment to be true ie. you didn't realise the full level of grimness on multiple threads.

However, I do wish that I hadn't made the comment now, after seeing what happened on this thread following the comment.

I also want to clarify that this thread came about last week because I wanted to alert the readers that trolls had infiltrated the site.

It's all well and good saying 'just report', if we knew that that was a functional way to get shut of trolls. But unfortunately most of us know that it can take some time, hours if not actual days, over three days in the case of the Thai thread.

If you think that it's a thread about a thread, it's not intended to be. It's intended to be a thread about the site.
And even if it is a taat, I don't really care.

If you read most of my later comments, I hope that it is apparent that I am criticising the people who run / moderate / monitor / whatever Gransnet.
I still firmly stand by my argument that the site is left unmonitored for prolonged periods of time, hence the troll posts remaining in full sight for over four hours.

Seems like too many chiefs and not enough Indians on here at present.

Well you have upset me very much Judgejane by accusing me of something I ve never ever in my life done
I will always call racists out
I have no time for overtly sexual comments
I do not support trolls of any kind

I read how everyone was upset by the amount of time it took HQ to remove the offending texts and was trying to think how we could get HQ s attention more quickly that is all
And yes it hurts to be accused of something you haven’t said thought or done
